@dmtzcain - I am also looking forward to when proper HDR support happens for still images! I think it will take a long while though, unfortunately. While there are quite a number of displays that support HDR, mostly TV's & cell phones at this point, the software and usage of HDR content is still real awkward and confusing in a lot of ways for average consumers. As you note, while there have been still image standards put forth, there seems to be little interest in adopting them or making them usable in a meaningful way.
There was one interesting development in this space lately though, but only applies to photographers shooting raw formats. Affinity Photo (photoshop type program) just had an update that adds proper HDR support to their Raw converter. I downloaded a trial and played a round with it a bit and it's kind of amazing to see your photos with such a broad exposure and gamut latitude (assuming you have a good HDR display). It's currently fairly useless except for checking out your photos and gawking until we have more meaning full ways to use them but it has me excited for what's to come.
