I would call it marginally unacceptable.  It may get even worse though. Got to prepare for that possibility.  They have to get better than that, but they could get worse first. It’s some seriously obnoxious backlight bleed but there aren’t any dead pixels.  @5x5 claims it’s an artifact of the bezel type.  My personal opinion is if the bezel type causes that they need different bezels.  They can’t have that level of backlight bleed as a standard.  It’s obnoxious.

I went through several laptops when choosing my own - the thicker the bezels, the less bleed they had. It's also why this was never an issue 5 years ago. Laptops had normal bezels and monitors too so the backlight was properly insulated and didn't "bleed"

I was thinking buying a another one then comparing them both then returning the worse one but honestly do you guys think it’s bad enough to return or it’s not that bad this is my first gaming laptop so I really don’t know

Use it in a real world situation and decide.

Thanks for the input I paid 1400 for I7 10750h with a rtx 2070 115 watt near perfect deal but screen man it sucks...

You may be better off returning it for an Eluktronics RP-15 with Electro Boost. The 2060 in that model will be very close to your 2070 due to the aggressive power table boosting and the 4800H will produce lower thermals. It also has smaller bezels and less bleed.

I generally would choose backlight bleed over dead pixels.  That’s some unusually bad backlight bleed.  @5x5 May be right in that it’s a bezel narrowness issue And thing generally don’t get much better.  I personally would rather have a thicker bezel, (with the increased hand real estate that goes with it) and no dead pixels.

The problem is returning it only once might not do because the next one could have dead pixels on it.  That has become a recently worse monitor problem as well.  Is it lame? Yes.

You could also get unlucky and get double the backlight bleed from the RMA and they probably won't accept the second RMA

Thanks for answering. For media editing i'll mostly be using photoshop and premiere. I'm unsure what quicksync is, but from what 5x5's been saying it would probably be best without it..?

For the gaming aspect of things I may have oversold my needs. I'm planning to be playing stuff such as indie games and Minecraft with maybe a touch of higher end stuff but only as single player so i'm not sure if this values the worth and purchase of a laptop with up to 240hz.

With that being said, in both of your opinions would your recommendations still be the Asus Zephyrus G14/G15?

The G14 with the 1440p screen is ideal for you

As for Quick Sync, it's a way to use the intel iGPU to speed up rendering but I've been having massive issue with it and support has severely waned due to the Intel F series that dont have integrated graphics anymore.

I don't have thermal camera so I can't observe the VRM thermals, but these thing definitely get super duper hot if you run heavy load.

In fact, I think the whole chassis act as a heat dissipation unit, since it's so thin and small I suspect the cooling get contact with the bottom panel itself. So on normal task, the CPU sits at 52 ~ 54*C idle and the chassis is quite cool

The chassis doesn't make contact with the heatsink, I've seen that tested. It gets hot due to the entire board (small as it may be) generating heat and there being almost no airflow. The fan is positioned very strangely as it can't draw in air but also exhausts air and creates negative pressure that only really serves to draw in dust

adobe photoshop/ aftereffect? Quicksync will be useful

     what type of games?

Quick sync support is pretty dead. It's been crashing on my for a year on my personal laptop with a 6700HQ. I had to turn it off because it was Infuriating.

    Hi all,

I realize this thread is filled with questions like this but I might as well give it a go.

I'm a long time mac user trying to get a windows laptop but there's just so many options and I honestly don't know that much about computers so it's kind of overwhelming.

I'm looking for something around 15 inches, windows 10 pro, 16gb or more of memory, non-touch and simply a nice machine that will last me a while with which I can do some mild gaming, basic networking, and photo/video editing.

I don't know enough about cpu's and gpu's to know what i'm looking for but hopefully you guys can help me out with that.

My budget is around 1500$ but willing to go higher (~2000$) if a deal looks good enough.

    Any recommendations?

    Thanks-

Look at the Asus Zephyrus G14 or G15. Two of the best laptops for 2020 and seem to fit your needs perfectly.

Those 2070s are slower than a full 2060 115W as found in the Eluktronics RP-15. Just because it says 2070 doesn't mean anything. Most are so crippled by the 80-100W power limit that they are slower than a normal 2060.

Lakefield is primarily designed to provide a very low idle power CPU, and the operating 7W TDP isn't exactly much either. If it has low performance due to low clocks, I don't consider that a problem in itself. The biggest thing to overcome to support similar future designs that may scale to much higher power is OS and software support for it.

Yeah, I agree but in the case of Lakefield, the boost clock is actually non existent. It's being advertised but never seen under any type of load which is very odd

    So i have an issue

My father Really hates AMD and hes been with Intel since 2004 and will never want to get an AMD for a primary computer

I tried to talk to him about AMD but he will always says no.

    So just wait for i7-10700k?

I mean, try to tell him that brand bias is a poor mentality and that judging current products by something he heard 20 years ago is foolish at best.

But I'd you're stuck on intel, get a 10600K and beefy cooling.
