  1. The rx570 is already a noticeable amount faster than the desktop version of the 1050 ti. The 1050ti in your laptop is going to be downclocked and even slower than that. The rx570 would give you quite a big bump in framerates compared to the GPU in your laptop. Also 570s tend to overclock quite nicely, most being able to reach near the performance of a stock 580. as for the rest of the system the i7 is a lot older and will have worse single thread performance compared to the i5 BUT the hyperthreading will help out a lot, especially in newer titles, and will be less stuttery and more stable on average due to the extra threads 8gb DDR3 is pretty cheap nowadays, buy another set to bump it up to 16gb With some extra ram and a good 570/580 thrown in there, your PC will turn into a gaming rig that will put your laptop to shame in most titles

  3. This. Yeah a physical core is always going to work faster than a "virtual" hyperthreaded/SMT thread. But means nothing if you don't have enough cores in the first place. Yes you will (in some games, not all) get better fps without multi-threading on but only if your CPU has enough physical cores to not hit that limit even with multi-threading turned off. A new AAA game like Battlefield V i think will happily use up like 10 threads, plus anything you've got going on in the background (steam, discord, windows services/updates etc) thats even more. At this point if you want to run with no multi-threading you're gonna want a CPU with like 16+ physical cores ie a Threadripper or a i9-9980xe So yeah, if you have a 4/6/8 core CPU and want the best performance, hyperthreading ON will always be better And if you have a 16 core CPU and want the best possible gaming performance, then you bought the wrong CPU in the first place
  4. Will it bottleneck a ~2080 level card? Oh yes, but mainly in newer titles, they just need more than 4 threads. Battlefiled V for example will happily eat up 10 threads. Rocket league on the other hand would probably happily run on a core 2 duo. Like @Chiyawa said, if used market around you is good, get a 4th gen i7 and just OC the crap out of it (assuming cooling is good enough) The hyperthreading will really help out and probably give you another year or two breathing room before you have to do a full rebuild. I'm in the UK and CeX (used hardware shop chain) has 4770k listed for £115($145 usd) so probably not too hard to find even cheaper looking at private sellers if you want to. Then sell your i5 and you'll probably get half the cost back anyway

  6. 74 degrees under load for a laptop really isn't bad. My laptop sits consistently in the high 80/low 90s if i'm gaming. All dust free and re-pasted and everything. Laptops just have a whole lot less space for heatsinks and use tiny fans so yeah, obviously some are better than others but any laptop will be running insanely hot in comparison to a desktop with equivalent components
  7. No you're right. A drive with windows 10 can be plugged into basically any other PC and it will just install new devices drivers and sort itself out. It's a bit messy and can create some weird bugs sometimes but it works. Not as nice as a clean install obviously. But windows 7? Nada, that OS would've basically crippled itself trying to do that. If you have another working PC somewhere, plug the drive into that (externally, don't boot of it lol) and see what files you can pull from it... But yeah, you likely gonna need a fresh install mate
  8. In terms of FPS in games? GPU. That i7 has 8 threads at a decent clock speed so should still be managing fine in most games. Some of the new big AAA titles will probably cause it to struggle a bit but in most cases the 970 is still going to be the biggest bottleneck. Wouldn't suggest running like a 2080 super/ti or stuff like that on that i7 but a 1080/ti it should handle fine in most cases
  9. ^^ This I actually used to have this motherboard lol But yeah if the bios on it is anything older than the f40 revision, it won't support that processor. you'll need to put in an old ryzen chip first and get it updated Wrote this ages ago and never clicked send, glad you figured it out
  10. According to that the fan with it's LEDs will draw 0.48A so 0.96A for two together on one header . You're fine to connect two of them to your motherboard using a splitter like @Fasauceome linked above. Connecting them to the motherboard fan header would be recommended however IF you want to run them directly from your PSU you'll need a molex to fan adapter cable, but doing so means you won't be able to control the fan speeds from your motherboard, they will just run at full power all the time
  11. Have a prism on my 2700X (stock speeds). Note the prism cooler has a toggle switch to choose between low and high fan speed modes, i keep mine on low. I have the fan set on 50% from 0 to 60 degrees, then a straight gradient to 100% from 60 to 75 degrees. Idle temps range from about 40 to 50 degrees. Max load (Cinebench etc) get its up to 76 degrees with the CPU boosting to ~4GHz on all cores and pulling ~120W During gaming it sits around the high 50s to low 60s (My main game is warframe, not very CPU intensive so YMMV) I also have a Masterliquid ML120 RGB which i used to run on it, with dual fans in push pull exhausting air. Temps were slightly better but basically identical. peaked at 75 degrees (obviously took longer to get there) Idled around 42-45 Stuck with the air cooler for simplicity I'd say you need to get a 240 AIO to make the performance difference worth it, the prism is a half decent air cooler already so a 120 AIO is barely any better
  12. When it does get into windows, it it usually quite stable after that? Can it keep a benchmark going at high cpu loads for 30+ mins for example, and at what temps? Just trying to rule out bad power delivery or CPU mounting pressure issue or something like that. Also do you have another GPU you can test? I'm assuming it's an fx cpu with no iGPU? Could be that causing post issues... also try changing which PCIe slot the GPU is installed in in case one has gone funny Otherwise it may just be a bad board unfortunately...
  13. FYI if it is fast boot causing the issue you can disable it here in control panel. It's a terrible feature that microsoft sets to ON as default. At my work I've set a network policy to disabled on every PC we have automatically as it causes a whole host of issues, all just for the sake of (if you have an SSD) literally booting 1 or 2 seconds faster
