  1. Sounds like the safest bet would be to try my luck with a second, identical CPU as I only risk a few bucks... @NeedfuldoerThank you for that information! I will focus on the Sandy Bridge Xeons then! All of the Sandy Bridge ones I looked up till now only cost around 10€ without shipping so as long as I dont physically damage the CPU slot or something similiar i don't risk much...
  2. @An0maly_76 thx for the tip with the 3050 - i was already suspecting that Thanks for the website - thats really helpfull for me!
  3. Budget (including currency): 500€ (base workstation is free or very cheap) Country: Austria Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: ALLPLAN, OBS, Zoom, Cinema 4D, Lumion Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): Status: conceptional phase Monitors: for now 2 HD or WQHD but in future maybe 3-4 alternatively 1 4K monitor Peripherals: for now Mouse, Shuffle Board USB Controller, USB microphone, 1080p webcam in future: phantom powered large diaphragm microphone, hooing up some used DSLR for content creation In the next months i might have the opportunity to get my hands on an old DELL workstation free or very cheaply... We used it for professional work in the company I am working for but we got new beasts of workstations equipped with the best i9 series 12x and 16GB graphics cards so some old stuff hast to go... The why: I teach the software ALLPLAN to students at universities in german speaking countries (in person and online) and take part in third party financed research projects for the uni with the software. My current laptop (i7 4700mq and GTX 770M) used to handle most functions very well, never had performance issues up till now, but the GPU is not supported bythe software anymore (OpenGL version too old and no more driver updates) and some visual features dont work anymore (openings in walls not showing up, some 3D perspectives not working...) and it starts to impact the quality of my lessons. I also had the problem that the graphics card started freezing when I was attending a Zoom Meeting and sharing the CAD/BIM software. I got it to temporarily work again by setting throttle to 100% but thats no long time solution for me... I don't feel like buying a comparable up to date laptop right now for about 2000€ as there just was the first big leap in GPUs for quite some time (RTX30x and RTX40x) and with a laptop I am permanently stuck with whatever it comes with out of the box... and I see my work getting more mobile so I would prefer a ultrabook like the Surface Laptop Studio with something like a 3050 Ti (really any dedicated GPU should be enough in my experience) one or two years down the line My solution: Update 2xCPU workstation with a "cheapish" NVIDIA GPU and some RAM for CAD/BIM, 3D Modelling, Architectural Photo and Video Rendering and Live Streaming and Video Content Creation for Teaching and now and then some gaming in HD or WQHD Streaming in 4k when the districts fibreoptic cable is finished Case: To be honest i would even buy it for the nice case (DELL Precision T5600) its in... it has a steel carry handle on the front and the back and great accesibility with a removable side panel and lots of ventilation openings. Overall a lot of room to work with. I am responsible for basic IT support (software install and licenses and hardware related tasks, no server or network stuff) and I always prefered the older DELL cases to the new smaller Lenovo ones in nearly every aspect... Built out of suprisingly thick sheet metal and with lots of places for IO. CPU: Regarding CPU I am very open to your recommendations and suggestions. I know it can't match modern CPUs, even top end ones being suprisingly cheap compared to the crazy GPU prices, but for my usecase it might just work... Especially the cheap first option... Following are some ideas I have right now... 1/2 CPU Slot Intel Xeon CPU E-5 2620 0 2/2 CPU Slot empty Option 1) Because of my usecase I might actually benefit from filling the second CPU Slot. We have one Workstation with 2 matching CPUs and I notice the difference. You can get it used for around 10€ now - to be honest I am seconds away from just YOLO ordering that one XD Option 2) I am even thinking about getting the most powerfull CPU I can fit in the socket... It is an LGA2011 (Sandy Bridge) so an Ivy Bridge CPU is possible) I still have to find out if LGA2011-1 CPUs are the same as the LGA2011 I already know LGA2011-3 or LGA2011 v3 aren't compatible. I could get also one or two used Intel Xeon Processor E7 8893 V2 for about 100€ each from a professional IT supplier that cleans and tests them. Cooling: I will just by a matching Noctua Cooler or get a used cooler and add NEW ventilators to it before installing - for rendering jobs constant cooling is very important. I might also add some other ventilators from decommisioned workstations for taking air in and out of the workstation - as I have access to them... If I feel fancy, I might add some Noctua fans on the case itself and a fan controller. And some Noctua Thermal Paste or another non conductive Thermal Paste - not feeling like adding liquid metall as the motherboard is mounted vertically and I don't feel like taking this risk... Motherboard: unknown 2 CPU motherboard (likely OEM) with 2x4 RAM slots for DDR3 RAM RAM: at least one RAM slot is damaged (computer won't start if a RAM is installed, if you install more than one RAM the computer starts to throttle like a vacuum cleaner, so another one might have issues as well) currently equipped with 16GB of DDR3 RAM (slow one 1600MHz but we have faster ones in some Workstation and you don't notice the difference the software we use) we have many old DDR3 RAM Sticks laying around that I can also get just by asking so I just have to try around which slots still work and how much RAM i can put in at max... but i won't be needing any more than 16 to 32 GB for now I also have two old PCs standing around at home that have compatible RAM but were only equipped with ancient Intel i3 or i5... GPU some old AMD Firepro (not supported by the professional software I use) ONLY NVIDIA is recommended by the companies that produce the software I am using, so sadly AMD is not an Option at all I am not afraid of a used GPU, even one from a miner would be fine as it doesn't have to survive for years... But if I can't find a used one for a good price and from a trustworthy seller I might just buy a RTX 3060 Ti or RTX 3050 Ti... If I can't find anything matching my criteria I will just buy any GPU that runs the OpenGL specs I require... Because most of my usecases are CPU heavy rather than GPU - I tested the new 16GB CPUs my company bought - I had to try really hard to get them to 20% workload (mostly moving in the 3D environment at veery high resolution and frames per second - the software saddly doesn't really use the GPU for Rendering any of Camera Flights or pictures) Only real requirement is that it supports 3-4 monitors in HD or WGHD and some 4k streaming or video editing on a single monitor. SSD: some 512GB or 1TB SSD in sale or I keep the old one installed in the PC - after it is overwritten and deleted according to company policy... RAID or backup in general doesn't matter, as the important stuff is in the cloud and stuff that is personaly important to me is backed up to external drives manually but regularly Network: a 2x1Gbit Network Card is already installed doesn't have WIFI - will be added same for bluetooth SoundCard: thinking about adding an PCIe Soundcard https://www.thomann.de/at/esi_maya44_ex.htm may add one for using Large Diaphragm microphones (recording tutorials and streaming lessons) have one powered by USB, it has a nice sound quality but I have to stick close to it and talk a bit louder... I already tried phantom powered microphones at a friends place - even cheap record you much louder, more relaxing for me in the longterm PowerSupply: will uninstall and clean with compressed air and see if I have to get a more powerfull one... RGB: maybe some simple and cheap lighting just for fun XD the cooling openings would show light from inside the tower but nothing complicated USB: if i happen to stick with the device long term If i have fitting slots left i might add a USB3.0 or USB4.0 card for backing up projects (building models and Renderings and videos can get huge - no motivation to run a NAS or similiar server) Operating System: already comes with Win10 Pro maybe even Win11 Pro I will repost in this thread if I really start my project... Feel free to share your tips or opinions with me - I am very open to suggestions and criticism and happy to benefit from your experiences.
  4. loved republic commando Hope they are gonna make a sequel one day. Original Far Cry is something i might want to try some time, got started with 3 overall nice collection with lots of classics
  5. my longest game was USA against russia AI was piecefull into the Atomic Age and built up a massive nuclear arsenal, but they built the Anti Missile wonder before me so I wasnt able to win against them. I had my continent they had theirs. at seven years old i didnt realise i just reenacted the cold war XD same with britain and france
  6. both are photo managers but might be usefull to you: i think Adobe Bridge is free (last time i checked) Canon DPP (Digital Photo Professional) if you ever owned a Canon Cam i think you can download it with its serial number might not help a sony user tough. Maybe there is some equivalent software from Sony? (yes, just googled it XD https://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/de/rawviewer) i also dont really like the win10 photo viewer i always install the old windows photo and fax viewer because it feels way more responsive...
  7. You asked the right question at the right time XD i was just archiving my old games around christmas... even the first one is there, it came with the first PC in our house that could "game" XD Midtown Madness 2 soon to be followed by Anno 1602 for 5€ at a local supermarket and then brand new Anno 1503, where my dad bought the Add-On (nowadays DLC XD) and we couldn`t get it to work for days until we realised we needed the basegame too... others are Red Baron 3D, Civ III, Big Oil, the Settlers 2 and Alien Nations (JoWood Game) tried some of the games, but Windows 10 doesnt like them... (seems like some 16bit stuff hidden in there) Should have kept Win7 around on at least one PC, because i didnt notice any not working on 7. Then i bought Empire: Total War in a Store only to find a Letter inside the box with a Steam Key. After discovering Steam Sales i didnt buy more than 10 games as physical copys... (only at big discounts or games that you no matter what couldnt get digital) biggest difference, i really played all games i own physical copys of. cant say that about my steam library
  8. Considering software i really like the Affinity Products (Photo, Designer, Publisher) which you can get for 50€ each. I dont really miss any,Photoshop Features. But that might be because of my workflow... The way Designer and Photo are working with Publisher is quite comfortable from my perspective. @PixelPol I dont have anything to add XD Well written.
  9. @Teradore @Yobbin >=D Thanks to both of you for your answers. I will test the 17-50 and the 18-250 hands on. Thanks for your recommendations. I didnt know anyone in my area who is using Sigma (except the ARTline which is too costly ?) so no one of my contacts could make a recommendation. @Yobbin >=D Yeah i dont want to replace the body yet because i am still very pleased with the reliability and image quality. I dont plan on buying a new APS-C before it breaks, considering I plan to buy a Canon 6D or successor in a few years... And thanks for telling me what you use the tourist lens for and for what you dont.
  10. Hi LTT-forum, i am currently looking to upgrade from my kit lens [Canon EFS 18-55mm] that I used as an always-on. The lens is pretty much dead now... Optical it's still doing well but there is a little rattle when using it and i notice some shaking momentum when the AF is working. There are also random connection issues... Most likely one of the cables on the inside is woren out. No suprise after +200.000 photos ? And the biggest problem is that the lens AF doesnt really work anymore. In certain areas of the zoom it cant AF anymore. Manual focus isn't really an option for me as I have quite bad eyesight and couldn't really tell because of the small viewfinder. My primary use cases are event photography, lowtier photography for regional newspapers and some private events. (local marching band, rural youth and some events hosted by the community/local government) The secondary use cases are nature, buildings and documentation [mostly to document the condition of buildings] I need the 18mm are because i often have to take photos in kind of confined spaces (no room to move a bit back because of crowded areas) or have to get a lot of people on one picture (group fotos), But i also need to take some photos from a bit of a distance... (As I dont always have the time to switch to the Telezoom or the Telezooms minimum zoom is too much...) I am looking for a always on lens thats compatible to my current Camera. I would use it as an always on. My budget would be up to 500€. I am open to 3rd party lenses, as i am not too fixated on canon. So please recommend Sigma or Tamron too if you are using them yourself. Weight isn't an issue to me. It should be at least as reliable as the kit lens XD I was quite happy with it to live threw 11 years with heavy workloads and unwelcoming environments like beer tents and bad weather outdoor shooting XD It would be nice if it could also be used at fullframe bodys as I am looking to buy a fullframe Canon in the next 2-3 years. Thanks for your Recommendations! My current gear: Canon EOS 450 D [release date 04.2008] [US-name: EOS Rebel XSi] Canon Zoom Lens EF 75-300mm 1:4-5.6 III [also Kit-Lens] Canon Lens EF-S 24mm 1:2.8 STM Canon EF Lens 50mm 1:1.8 STM Metz Mecablitz 52 AF-1 digital
  11. Thank you for looking it up! Already ordered the Samsung SSD (on german Amazon) ?
  12. Ok, thanks for your Reply! Then I will try to get a good priced drive tomorrow at Primeday.
  13. 6/10 @yeetbuildermaybe Great photos don't need great cameras. While a great camera can let you see generic motives in new angles, bad cameras at the right moment with the right motive can make great photos too. Smartphone cameras offer the big plus that you near always carry them with you. And the Galaxys Camera is quite capable too. I like the bokeh of your picture (the unsharp Background). It would have been nice if you could have stepped a bit to the side because i think your shadow blocked the light from reaching the flower resulting in greater Detail, but it's still a nice picture. The upper Background has lots of lense artifacts in it, i personaly don't like them this edgy, but thats preference. The yellow above the grey background is a nice contrast. @Teradore 8/10 great Motive, i like the confined cutting. you could Play a bit with Highlights to make it eben better the only Thing i would change see the eyes which see quite dark but a tiger must be hard to shoot. even a housecat can be a challenge XD Here is a Little picture i took with my Nokia 9 - PureView while doing forerstry. While i would have loved to shot the tiny butterfly with my DSLR and my 24mm pancake lens i am quite satisfied with how it turned out. Got to love the possibilities the 3 monochrome and 2 Colour lenses offer one, especially while taking RAW pictures. And Affinity Photo helps with the little tweaks ;-). HMD Global - Nokia 9 27mm F/1.8 1/547sec ISO 100
  14. Second that... If in any way possible get the one with the i5 and the bigger RAM. and don't Forget to order the Surface pen if it doesn't come with the device in your Country! A Surface without the pen is no Surface in my opinion. I personaly prefer the Surface Pro-Line... written on my Surface Pro 3 - thermal throttling since 2015 XD
  15. A friend of mine is really happy with his surface book but it only has 15 Inch... (the one with the GPU) I am also very fond of my Surface Pro 3 (tough old and not high spec) but if you once got used to the stylus you will miss it on Every other device. Otherwise Lenovo has some quite nice ultrabooks (ThinkPad series). And Lenovo is quite popular with company suppliers if that is of importance to you...
  16. Hello LTT-community! This is my first post in this forum, so please tell me if i missed out on telling you anything important about my problem and please excuse if broke any unwritten forum rules... As my laptops system drive is a tiny 128GB SSD and I have to install quite big and demanding programs on it like Autodesk Revit, Nemetschek Allplan and all the office stuff I quite frequently ran out of space thanks to the Windows 10 updates... Because i didn't have enough free space to install a certain software I even ended up doing a full 3D Building Modell on my Surface Pro 3 which I can tell you is in no way something anyone would enjoy... So now I want to end this problem once and for all by upgrading my SSD and maybe the HDD in my Laptop. Both are easily accessible, I already took them out of the case today to see what my status quo hardware is. As the programs i use can be quite a pain to migrate between drives I am planning to do a "from scratch install" of the newest Windows 10 Version after installing the new drives into the laptop and install everything else from scratch. current SSD: 2,5” San Disk X110 128GB SSD (SD6SB1M-128G-1022I) SATA 6GB/s MLC I don't really know which SSD I should be looking for... Budget for new SSD: 200-300€ a bit higher also is no problem Use cases: Photo Editing with Affinity Photo, Affinity Designer and Affinity Publisher 3D Building Modelling with Autodesk Products like Revit and Nemetschek Allplan. Some Rendering. Gaming (big games like WarThunder and EAs Star Wars Battlefront II, Total War Games) To be honest I don't really have any idea what SSD i should replace the current one with besides that it should have at least 1TB of space and be somewhat future proof (maybe as a secondary SSD in my next tower pc should the laptop decide to die) current HDD: 2,5” Seagate Momentus ST1000LM024, 1TB (most likely OEM stuff) Cache 8MB 5400 rpm SATA 6GB/s For the HDD I am thinking of upgrading to an Western Digital product. I am not sure which one of the following two to choose and if these would an improvement over my current HDD. But i have to say that i will gladly risk the 100€ for one of those 2 drives... CHOICE A 2,5" WD Black mobile (WD10JPLX) SATA 6Gb/s Cache 32 MB 7200 RPM CHOICE B 2,5" WD Blue mobile (WD20SOZX) SATA 6Gb/s Cache 128 MB 5400 RPM CHOICE C I am always open to suggestions Should I prefer Cache over the RPM? My use cases would be document storage, photo storage (RAW-Files) and 3D model storage as well as not so important steam games. I frequently back up my files and store older files on external harddrives but I like to keep stuff directly on my PC to be able to access it fast. I really would like some input from the community in the task at hand, thanks in advance! Laptop Specifications: Laptop MEDION X782X motherboard Intel HM87 (Lynx Point) BIOS American Megatrends Inc.
