  1. I love the keyboard on the Yoga. I know this is not the most durable laptop but I take care of my things.
  2. A few weeks ago I was watching Linus's review of the LG Gram, I looked at my Chromebook and decided I needed a new laptop . At $1000 USD for a 13" lG Gram I couldn't afford it. On ebay the Grams were still $800. I set a max budget of $500 and I started looking. I posted on the Laptop and rebuilt forum to see what I could refurbish myself and I received loads of encouragement: Why would you buy a 5 year old laptop, with poor specs? There has to be some newer laptop that has been banged up a bit. Behold the Lenovo 710 14ISK AKA Shittop: Stock Specs: Intel 6200 i5 2.3GHz 8GB of DDR4 2333 256GB M.2 Sata SSD 1080p IPS Touch Screen Metal Case Backlit Keyboard I used the laptop for a day and I noticed the SATA SSD was slow, running 400 read, 200 write. Also the battery was shot as I could only get two hours of battery life on a charge. something you would not expect on a two year old laptop. Parts list: $140 Crucial 16gb DDR4 2400 RAM $70 Crucial 275GB M.2 Sata SSD $180 OEM Screen $50 OEM battery Now the laptop looks like this: Sexy screen, super snappy and a 6 hour battery life. Total price: $600 I sold the old ram for $55 and the old SSD for $60 Price out of pocket: $485 $15 under budget Considering a used example with stock specs and a blown battery run about $550 I think I made out well.
  3. I just bought a Lenovo Yoga 710-14ISK for $160 with a cracked screen and a replacement screen for $180. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Lenovo-Yoga-710-14-256GB-SSD-Intel-i5-6200U-2-30Ghz-8GB-RAM/323147152990?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649
  4. I have a custom built desktop I use for heavy tasks but I need a better laptop for university. I currently have a Chromebook that does not meet my on the go needs. I am looking at buying a 2-3 year old laptop that needs a screen replacement or something else that I could repair and upgrade to have a nice laptop. The base laptop would need to have: i5 or i7 Metal housing Back lit keyboard Huge battery 13in or 15in 1080p IPS screen Sufficient cooling Good keyboard and track pad Any suggestions on some hidden gems from Acer, Lenovo or Asus who tend to make cheaper laptops then Dell or HP?
  5. Useful info: 4000sq ft building Verizon Fios gig fiber connection Cat 5e is run throughout the building Verizon has their magic box in the basement and that is connected to a pfsense router that keeps crashing. I want this replaced with a pre built unit. Then it goes into a 16 port switch that wires every room but the attic with cat5e. The main Wifi comes from a linksys 1900ac WRT in the middle of the house on the second floor. Wifi in the garage comes from a junk wireless n router from a room up top of the garage on the second floor. We have about 20 devices ranging uses from emails, turtle coin mining, 4k Netflix and server remote connections. I would like 5ghz wifi throughout the house and into the garage under one SSID so I don't have to choose what router to be on when in different parts of the house. Should I get a few of these: https://www.amazon.com/Ubiquiti-Networks-802-11ac-Dual-Radio-UAP-AC-PRO-US/dp/B015PRO512/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1518892216&sr=8-3&keywords=ubiquity+wireless+access+point&dpID=31zGaGUPhaL&preST=_SX300_QL70_&dpSrc=srch
  6. I am running at 4.0ghz with 1.3 volts. I ran AIDA64 for 15 mins and it is at 65C. Is that normal. It is on the stock cooler.
  7. I went shopping around for new and used parts. The used market prices are insane for these parts so I am just sticking with new except maybe a last gen GPU. Micro center has very good prices on everything except SSDs and RAM. I am probably going to pick up these parts from there: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/Lf8BsJ Ram, SSD and GPU I will shop around for.
  8. Good catch. When I say Abobe work, I mean light photoshop. Ryzen 5 is only $40 more than Ryzen 3. I think I need to go and have a look at what is out their for deals.
  9. It seems like something ryzen 3 powered is the way to go. Also I do not need a hard drive at all and the keyboard I will not include from the budget.
  10. I have a budget of $600 and I need a desktop that can do Adobe work and light gaming. I want to take a more scrapyard wars approach to the build and I don't mind looking for deals on eBay or buying used parts. Requirements: 1. 256GB PCIE SSD 2. Dedicated graphics 3. 80+ Bronze rated PSU 4. Back-lit mechanical keyboard. Maybe something like this: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/qHmZgL I already have two IPS 1080p monitors, mouse, Windows key, Corsair 100R case. Micro Center is a 20 minute drive from me and I am a prime member, I am not brand loyal at all, I just want the most band for the buck. Thank you for your time.
  11. How do I do that? I am new to pfsence and networking. I only installed pfsence with a VPN to try and stop Ajshit pie and his nonsense. That in itself was difficult for me.
  12. Is it possible to byass the vpn on pfsence to my tivo boxes so I can watch netflix?
  13. After messing with open WRT here are todays high scores: Macbook: http://beta.speedtest.net/result/6688532455 Huawei Mate 9: http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/a/3272894965 The speed test vary between 150 and 250 mbps. From online research It seems like the Macbook air can do 500 Mbps and my phone can do 250mpbs. I tested and confirmed that I an getting gigabit lan out of the 1900AC.
  14. The switches and linksys router next to the Verizon box are all 1gb. I now have the wrt1900ac in the little 1gig switch that the desktop geting 1gb lan is plugged into.
