  1. Hi, right now i' m at a point where i have too many hard drives and it's been difficult to track where is everything... so i decided it was time to start using a NAS or build one...i' m an architect and also a tech enthusiast from Italy, the main purposes of the solution would be: PERSONAL STUFF - storing foto, with face recognition and all other ways to classifying them automatically, (and also without manually updating everyone), so a services like google photos, amazon photos, DS photo but locally... - storing video - ability to create different users with different privileges (so that my parents can't mess up anything and have access only of what they should) - media server, movies, music, tv show, anime (i have a lot of media) i still don't know if Plex, Jellyfin or watherver synology uses... (jellyfin as far as i know should also have something for books/pdf witch i guess would be nice for my comic/manga collection) anyway, 1-3 steams max, probably 1 user for 90% of the time... - backup of devices i use... - steam shared library (totally optional but it would be cool B| ) PROFESSIONAL STUFF - storage of personal projects, clients stuff - organize a library of object and materials for render programs, so that i can have my library on every machine in my house. - i plan on going to live in another house soon, so i was wondering if i should use this machine also for managing some security cameras or if would be best to set a dedicated one for that task with maybe Home Assistant since for all the upper tasks the machine could be set to sleep during night or even waken up at request... while for security camera everything sould be always on. The plan was to decide a low energy configuration (since i' m basically the only user) and start with some hard disk in a defined configuration and then add others when needed more space... 1 - So what do you suggest? Should i go for a Synology or build a machine..? 2 - if the second one. What system install on it? FreeNAS, Unraid, others..? 3 - Hardware configuration ? (i don't have any spare hardware to reuse beside a raspberry pi witch is not fit for the task) Budget: For the Synology solution i was oriented towards the 1821+, and planned to start with 2 12tb iron wolf and 2 500gb nvme SSD for cache so around 1000-1500€... The machine will be placed in a separate room witch is near the bedroom so it should be quiet, and energy efficient with possibly the ability to start up on request. For my needs a small wait at the beginning is not a big deal as far as, when properly on, it's snappy... Sorry for the long post ù.ù
  2. Hi, in a few months i will leave my parents house and go in my new house. I already have some plans to how to set up my place there... The house need some adjustments since it was not designed with home automation in mind... anyway. I decided on some stuff but i have doubts on other... Right now i plan on buy a Synology NAS (for example the DS920+) that will take care about foto, personal documents, video and will act as a Plex server (even though i will use Synology proprietary app) I have some doubts about home assistant, i plan on using it in combination with homekit more or less... (i have ipad, iphone, apple watch... and probably i will also buy some new apple silicon laptop in near future..) and it is supposed to work with lights, door openings, room temperature, solar energy etc... and for this configuration a raspberry should still be enough. My doubts are on the possibility to set some surveillance cameras... Recently i've been wondering about the possibility to integrate some cameras in home assistant, 4-5-6-7... and i'm afraid that adding that much is enough to abandon the little pi for something more performing... (also i have seen some video about setting up some alerts with person detection or even use face detection... but that will require a lot of resources....) So.. - Should i use the pi with basic automation and set the cameras with Homekit (max 4 if i'm right) ? - Use the Pi for basics and then set up a surveillance system with a dedicated hardware..? - Give up on the Pi and rely on a more capable machine to work with that...? (suggestion on that) - Spend more on the NAS and rely on that...? The "server room" is near the bedroom so it was nice to have something silent (so not super loud servers) or even better totally passive that's why i was tempted by the NAS with ssd cache and by the raspberry with some heavy passive cooling case... If i will ever need something for example, space for gaming or work i will probably build a low cost pc with Unraid on it and call it a day. So that the nas will be dedicated for personal use and the server for professional use.
  3. Hi, it's been a while about installing a nas for some time to centralize all the different files I currently have on 4 hard disks and 2 computers... right now it's kind a mess... so i want to build a nas for media (Plex Server) movies, itunes library, image from DSLR...and some documents. The nas will be used mostly to store media and completed works. The nas should be accessible from all the devices from my wi-fi and potentially even from outside. Computer backups and other sensible data are supposed to be backed up on a different system accessible only locally. So right now i'm wondering about 3 options -buying a Synology (i was thinking of one 4 bay nas) -use a Macbook pro 2011 (already own) with faulted dedicated GPU with some programs such as FreeNAS -Build a dedicated PC (maybe not spending too much money) with some nas software Any advices? What are the best free software for nas? Right now i don't have a specific budget my only concerns are that 1- It should be silent! (i don't want a loud fan that is spinning 24/7, since most of the time probably the disk will not even spin... its just for having medias accessible everywhere) and on that point i like the deidicate pc idea because heat management can be addressed in so many ways... 2 - It should be easily upgradable or powerful enought to last quite a bit because i plan to keep for quite some time... 3 - "easy" ... i mean i don't want to use virtual machines or complicated stuff... i kust want something reliable that works fine... without need to manage settings every 2 weeks or having issues with software updates.... Thanks ?
  4. ok i think i've decided... i wuold probably go with - Grace design sdac (if on massdrop it will become available soon...) otherwise topping d30 -JDS Labs Atom (even though im a little concerned about built quality, not the sound of course, hearing so many review online...) - Sennheiser HD58x Do you think it's ok?
  5. Ok i know... the apple watch is an amazing device... but immagine that for some reason at a certain point you decide to switch to something like a google pixel.... than it become almonst useless but my biggest complain is about battery-life... i mean it's pretty annoying to charge a smartphone every single day... sometimes even more than one time.... but worrying also about the watch... i don't know.... i think that unless apple come up with something like an apple sport watch without much of the smart parts in order to gain in batterylife i will choose a slighted improved version of the fitbit versa...
  6. Hi everyone... Is there a smartwatch with -good look, nothing too bulky... (like Huawei watch GT) -long battery-life (like Huawei watch GT) -that is more oriented towards sports activities -can interact and share datas with everything...Apple Health, S Helath... Strava (The closest maybe are fitbit and Garmin even though they are just multi-platform app...) -basicly detect your activity without the need of setting manually everything (like Apple watch or Fitbit) -give training advice, i don't know VO2, resting time... (like Garmin) ????? I was looking for quite some time at sportwatch in general like Garmin and at a certain point i ended up looking at the Huawei watch GT and i thought it was awesome... i'm the king of guy which doesn't care about messages on my watch and a lot of other features that 90% of the time results just in a battery drain... I just want a watch that keep track of my activities and last quite a lot more than one day...and maybe has a good look. So you wuold think that with the Huawei watch GT i'm fine... WRONG! because for example i use a garmin edge 520 with my bike for keeping tracks with strava (not supported by Huawei GT). And also what i don't like of smartbands in general is that if you use one of them than you can't migrate datas of your previus hystory to another tracking app... so if you've been using a smartband for some time you are basicly stuck with that or obliged to discard all of your previous hystory. Do you think there's/there will be anything like this on the market?
  7. Thanks for your suggestion Well.... for music i tend to listen mostly to pop and rock music for what i prioritize i would say i like voices but also like immersive felling....take for example "A Sky full of stars of Coldplay" i like the sound of the voice but i also want some punchy bass i think... Honestly i don't even know what to search for...so i just name some artist hoping that you understand better than myself what i'm looking for ? Coldplay, Ed Sheeran OST of various films (the last was "Shallow" which i love how clear is the guitar in the initial part...but also "Top Gun" , "The greatest showman"...), and then some old glory Queen, red hot chili peppers... (I know i'm terrible at explaining ?)
  8. Hi, recently i've been thinking about improving my pc audio... so here's the point "i litterally and i mean LITTERALLY don't know anything about all that audio stuff" so... by browsing the web for some time i was thinking about grab something like a pair of sennheiser HD 650, which seems quite premium headphones at a "cheap" price... and then i should need a DAC and an AMP to drive them properly?.... so by asking to a couple of friends they suggested to buy something like Burson play or the Shiit Jotunheim which even though i aestetically like a lot... costs also a lot... So... i use headphones pretty much all the time when i'm at PC and i listen to musicm which cames from itunes, spotify and maybe sometimes (but really few times) some .flac file, i meant also to use headphones for watching movies (Netflix or other streaming services) and play games (Overwatch mostly and some times some casual play at Assassins creed or driving games...). So i'm wondering for my needs, do i really need that kind of equipment? Is it that much of a difference? For now i'm thinking about chosing the Sennheiser HD650 (or 6xx ??) with the Burson Play because i don't want to spend more than 500€ (unless you tell me that by just 200 more i can buy something that will change my life forever, and allow me to shoot laser beams from my eyes.... XD) i also i'm not an expert audiophile and because of that i'm not even sure if i will notice a slight difference between some good configuration.... That said... feel free to suggest some configuration that might suit my needs (Music, movies, and games) maybe akg or beyerdynamic instead of Sennheiser? .... or for DAC\Amp preamp.... whatever The only thing that i'm sure about is that i want a pair of over-ear open back headphone ( because i hate when ears become hot... and i don't have problem with sound insulation in my room) Thanks a lot to whom will reply to this post! peace!
