  1. For what you want to do that is a tight budget. Is the money for the Hard Drives included in that? Also, how high can the monthly electricity costs be? Old Servers are cheap and give you massive performance (that you won't need unless your application or game servers get big) but can cost you easily 20 CAD per month even if mostly in idle. In any way you should look around on eBay/Kijiji for good deals. With your use case I would probably look into getting either a relatively current Intel i5/i7 Hexa-Core or a Ryzen 5/Ryzen 7 used, plus a B450 motherboard and some RAM as it will keep your monthly electricity cost low. SSDs are great as Boot Drives and possibly Cache, make sure though to buy one from a reputable manufacturer. For the Case any case that still has the traditional Hard Drive Cages in the front will be a good choice. I would just try to get a good deal. Fractal Design maybe?
  2. "Burning" is the process of copying files onto an optical disk, as you "burn" the information into it with a Laser in your CD/DVD drive.
  3. From all you have posted, I can gather the following use cases and their requirements: Local NAS (Network Attached Storage) Failsafe Storage with RAID of ZFS 10TB of usable storage Storage can be Magnetic as it's only for storing video and eventually playing one stream In-Home Video Streaming Intel CPU that Supports Quicksync Utilize Plex for ease of use Game Server (this will be the most intense task) High-Clocked CPU more important than Core Count RAM, the more and faster the better SSD for low access times Application or Service for many Clients CPU with many Cores/Threads for highly parallel computing Separate Network for Security Reasons as available for Public The best way to stay flexible and do all of those things at the same time is Virtualization. While VMware and others are great, they also cost a lot of money. https://www.proxmox.com/en/ is a Debian-based, open source virtualization host which I can highly recommend. This will give you the following functions: Deploy different tasks in Containers and Virtual Machines on one Machine Ability to save states and quickly restore them so you can experiment without worries Different Virtual Networks with different rules, giving you the ability to isolate privat and public Now for Hardware Choices it depends strongly on what your budget is, so please share that. 4. This won't ever work for a global company like Nvidia, as those solutions your are referring to only operate on a National Scale. Every country has different IDs and not enough people have passports, while privacy laws in many countries would also make data collection in this way difficult if not impossible. Overall, the cost would be immensely higher than the gained benefit and Nvidia, in the first place, wants to make more and not less money.
  5. I would recommend to set up a second, low-spec computer where your TV is and remote into your main computer with something like https://parsecgaming.com/. To directly carry HDMI or DisplayPort over that long distance as well as USB, your only realistic option would be optical cables, which will cost you hundred of dollars.
  6. Hey, from what you said in this reply and your original post, some requirements are still unclear: What will be your use case where 20 Clients have to access it through Internet? The local Storage and single 1080p stream are easily done, but the Application or Game that needs to handle 20 Clients creates vastly different requirements depending on what exactly you are planning to do.
  7. Hey, your biggest enemy here is the high player count. The only way to run a highly modded server with that many people on it is to build a cluster of many parallel instances that run on one or multiple CPUs. For vanilla Minecraft there are implementations available like PaperMC, that make it a lot easier, so take that into consideration.
  8. Hey, Discord Bots won't require much performance, unless you're running an extremely busy server your computer sure will be fine. One thing to keep in mind would be power consumption, so it would be good to know what Specs that old PC has. There are many different ways to go about this, so could you please first answer the following two questions: 1. Is a Discord Bot the only thing you want to host, or would you also want to host a game server or NAS later on? 2. How much work are you willing to put into setting it up and maintaining it? Greetings!
  9. It's all about certification, they might even sell another variant marketed at another special market for double the price...
  10. As a Computer Science student it is likely that you'll have to do things in CLI before having started any Display Server, so no scaling. Would definitely recommend 1080p in that case.
  11. Do you just want an Operating System that works, or are you interested in learning a lot about GNU/Linux and using it to its fuller potential? Ubuntu is great for one who really just wants an alternative to Windows and MacOSX. If you intend to use Linux in a more advanced way, look into Fedora or Manjaro. Stay aware from barebones Arch Linux and Gentoo, as they have too much of a steep learning curve if you are new to the GNU/Linux world.
  12. Hey Tim, if you just want to have some fun with Linux, I highly recommend that you install it on an external storage drive or in a Virtual Machine, as it seems that you aren't too experienced. If you want help with that, let me know. On Macs, wrong action with formatting tools can lead into the Mac getting bricked, even when using Apple's own Bootcamp for Windows.
  13. Hey, I wanted to share my experience here. Being a German Citizen who didn't get to see his Canadian fiance living near Toronto since February of this year because of the travel restrictions, I was wondering whether somebody here might be in a similar situation. The travel exemptions only go for common-law couples or those who have had a shared residence for a year. And she can't come to Germany either, because she can't take off two weeks to Quarantine afterwards in addition to the travel.
  14. This laptop seems kind of weirdly positioned, they already have the G15 with nearly the same specs apart from one inch bigger screen.
  15. That your data gets wiped should be expected when sending a machine in for repair. For security reasons they'll have to do this and to be honest I think it's quite laissez-fair of yourself to not secure erase your stuff before sending it in. Also, you should always keep a backup of your data anyways.
  16. Thanks, that was very informative. Is there any specific hardware you would recommend?
  17. Hey everyone, I am trying to achieve the following, leaving out the reasoning to keep this post a bit shorter: - Being able to flexibly route the connections from two different ISPs to any devices or subnets in my network - Create up to 4 different sub networks to which devices can be quickly assigned through switch software - IP Telephony and Multicast IPTV should work - Remotely manageable - 1GBe is enough, POe would be a nice to have on not more than 2 ports - minimum of 10 ethernet ports for devices + two for the ISPs Not being too experienced when it comes to networking, I am now searching for a hard- and sotware solution to realise this. Potentially buying used server hardware from eBay would be preferred over more expensive new solutions, keeping in mind I am located in Germany. I am thankful for any input on this. All the best Regards, -Caspar

  19. I'm really waiting on your review on a XPS 15 OLED, when it's available. They actually put OLED option cheaper than the 4k Touch IPS one, and market it towards content creators. And because of it not being targeted towards Gaming the whole package seems to make more sense

Food for thought. What if we could have a mothe…

Actually I thought about this too some time ago. The main problem is, that you would need to have the Chipset and important controllers on the cpus board, because otherwise it wouldn't be modular. And because this would be such a niche product, the production of that would be way too expensive for any company to be able to justice it in front of their shareholders. I am surprised somebody tho who had just the same idea. Maybe we should hook up at some future point in time.
  21. Hey guys, was wondering whether it's possible to replace a MacBook Keyboard to switch it for example from ansi to iso or the other way around. Just replacing the keycaps won't work, am i wrong? Oh, and how much would it cost o do it diy. Thanks in advance
  22. Thanks for the reply. Maybe you could make a video figuring it out
