  1. adblock is so essential that I can't imagine even attempting to browse the internet without it. but there's always the potential that ads can get around them between updates, so secondary protection is very useful. yeah, I was trained in the wild wests of the early '00's, and most of those tactics have not changed. but there's always the chance to catch one, and checking every six months or so that my system is clean, or does have something, is really helpful. I do need to install a new SSD so maybe I'll do a fresh install with Malwarebytes this time.
  2. I've been using Avira for years but in the last couple months they've had pop-ups on my desktop, usually over top of whatever I was doing, which is annoying enough, but then I noticed they haven't run any scans and manually scanning leaves it hanging. So now it's both prompting me to buy it and not working when I ask it to. So I'm thinking it's time to switch, but my usual method of "google antivirus and check some blogs" has yielded more ads than blogs, and the blogs that do show up in a search aren't really ones I trust now. What's the general consensus on good anti-virus software in 2022? Preferably with minimal ads and actually thorough when scanning?
  3. lol okay, so I was apparently still using Killer Network Manager v1.1.xxxx and they're up to Killer Control Center v2.4.xxxx, so yeah I was wildly out of date. Thank you for the observant eye, good sir. Interesting that I haven't had this issue crop up until this month, though. ... the control panel for this is on the Microsoft Store and can't be downloaded. Still got the driver itself off the website so whatever. Hopefully this is it but I'll still be keeping my eye on things.
  4. ... yeah but I was really hoping not to. Buddy pointed out that my Non-paged pool getting up to 15.2gb means it's probably a driver issue, so I'm gonna start looking into that now.
  5. Avira and Malwarebytes both came back with clean results for virus scanning, if there's another anti-virus worth checking out I'm all ears the process tab on Task Manager showed nothing over 200mb in use, same with the details tab, I'll try to get screenshots of both when the issue happens again I should also note it's completely random, I've had it happen morning, noon and nights, both when I was busy at my computer and getting up and leaving it for 20 minutes, just no pattern that I've been able to spot so far
  6. I'm at the end of my rope trying to figure this out. Recently, my computer has been freezing up, hard, and bringing up task manager shows that something has my RAM maxed out: At first I just think it's Opera being full, but then a day later it happens again, and I don't even have a web browser open. So I run a virus scan, and it doesn't detect anything. A friend suggests it could be faulty RAM, so I run a test on that, it passes: Another friend suggests I use RamMap, so I download that and leave it open at all times, since trying to open it when my RAM is already maxed wouldn't be helpful. I had it open during another freeze today and got this: I wish I took a picture when I was flipping through the tabs, but nothing used more than 200mb of ram so I didn't think of it. After a restart (which took 5:58 from hitting the button to being in control again), I reopened it and it looks like this: ... and I have no idea what's going on. I have two new sticks in the mail already, so I'm gonna try replacing the sticks I got and see if that works, but otherwise I'm completely at a loss for what's even going wrong. Anybody here ever have similar issues with RAM just maxing itself out on nothing?
  7. Trimm is on and it was defraged 2 days ago. Did it again just cause. really does look like I'll have to do a fresh install... ugh...
  8. I put Win10 on this system in 2016 and haven't had any reinstalls or issues, just gradually slowing down over time. Did a benchmark test and checked the history for the last time I tested and... that's an interesting difference.
  9. Hmm. Well then, guess I'd get a fresh install started then. Also, SM also says RAPID mode is not working for some reason, do you have RAPID mode working on yours? EDIT: What's TRIMM? Maybe I'll give that a look.
  10. 109 GBs used, SM says the health is good with the latest firmware. Also says there are two partitions which I have never understood but whatev.
  11. Samsung 850 EVO 250GB is my OS drive, was thinking of using the 970 EVO instead. Most of what I've been reading says NVMe is a x4 difference, that just hot air eh?
  12. I have a Gigabyte H170 Gaming 3 motherboard with a i7 7700, and I've been noticing it's taking quite a long while to start up and shut down. Start up is usually around 30 seconds though it can take longer, and shut down I've seen take over 3 minutes which is like, damn, my first computer wasn't that slow. So I've been thinking maybe it's time to upgrade the SSD, but then I realized, oh yeah, I have two m.2 slots that I have literally never used before, maybe I should use those. As someone new to NVMe's, I was hoping to ask, how easy is it to transfer over Win10 from my current SSD to a NVMe? And would a RAID setup be worth the investment? Still in the middle of reading up on NVMe's but these are the two questions I have right now that I was hoping to get some opinions on. Thanks for your time!
  13. Got a RTX 2060, which is why I decided to upgrade my CPU, that and I found that i7 7700 for $200 which I thought was a good price. I suppose my next upgrade would be a M.2 SSD drive, all I got are SATA drives. But for right now I think I got as good as I can get without wholesale replacing the MoBo, at which point you might as well start with a new system.
  14. I'm still curious why the temperature fluctuates so much at idle. It doesn't hold steady at any point, and flings between 30 to 40 to 30 per second, seemingly at whim.
  15. Yesterday, I upgraded my CPU from an i5 6400 to an i7 7700. Coulda got a 6700k but that guy wanted $70 more and I didn't think OC would be worth that much more. So far, pretty satisfied. I could run the RTX Minecraft mod and it looks great and runs super smooth. However, during testing I noticed that this i7 runs way hotter than my i5. Normally my i5 idles around 20°C and tops out around 35°C while running 3DMark. The i7, meanwhile, is idling at very wide range, between 30° and 40°C, and under load goes all the way up to 60°C. I'm not worried, but I'm curious why the range is so wide and why it switches so quick. My i5 ran at idle at a much more stable temperature.
