  1. OK, sorry if I was being a bit snippy. I'm a little cheesed at being out like >400$.
  2. The motherboard as well? Thanks for your extra helpful response...
  3. Hey everyone, Here is the system: CPU: Ryzen 2700 (Cooled with Corsair H100i) GPU: Radeon RX Vega 64 MOBO: MSI Gaming Plus x470 PSU: EVGA Supernova G3 750W Storage: ADATA NVME 480 GB, Seasonic 2TB + *New* Seasonic 4TB I'm a relatively new PC builder and I've reached a point where I'm unsure how to proceed. Last Friday I received a new HDD (see above) in the mail to expand the storage of my build. I was in a slight hurry but I figured I had time to install it. I turned off the PSU and unplugged my machine. I went about installing the HDD in a normal way (I already have the same HDD in the system already). Then after finishing I went to boot it up and everything came on for a second and then quickly turned off with a pop. I smelt a strong burning plastic smell coming from the top of the MOBO. I assumed this was static or something and the MOBO was dead. But after testing my parts in my GFs system I discovered that both the MOBO and the CPU are dead. I've already ordered new parts to replace the MOBO and CPU to get my system up and running again. I built the system about 1 1/2 years ago (~Black Friday 2018) and I have only overclocked the CPU a couple times and they were pretty modest and stable (<4GHz). I also didn't have an overclock on my system when it broke. My real question because I haven't ever gone through this is: Am I going to be able to get any compensation for these parts? I realise I voided my warranty when I overclocked but the overclock was by no means the reason this happened. Does anyone have experience with these companies (MSI and AMD) and how receptive would they be of my claims. I'm truly in the dark as to how to proceed or even if any of this is worth my time... Please LTT troubleshooting forum, your my only hope...
  4. So I did check and I couldn't see anything at all (then again my PCB is black so it would be hard to see anyway). The burning smell definitely appeared to be coming from the top area of the motherboard near the CPU. I have another Mobo coming in the mail so I guess we'll find out if that's the fix. I just wanted to know if the nothing at all happening (knowing the PSU is fine) is an indication that it is the Motherboard. Really appreciate your help, its actually given me some peace of mind haha
  5. I believe I unplugged it (it was a week ago), but I definitely turned off the switch at the back.
  6. Hey all, I built my first PC about a year ago and everything went fine and was pretty easy overall. Just a couple weeks ago I installed a new hard dive to expand my storage. After the install, my computer turned on for literally a second and then turned off (a strong burning smell was coming from the mobo area, but I didn't see any smoke or obvious damage). Since then I've trimmed down to only the essential components (CPU, GPU, MOBO, PSU, boot drive) and this still leads to nothing when I try to power on (I literally mean nothing, no sounds lights or anything happening when I hit either the mobo power on button or connect the two power pins). I've tested my psu on another computer and it works fine. Based on this am I right to assume the problem lies with my mobo? Is it possible that I created static which blew something? This is my first time troubleshooting a system like this and I just want to make sure I'm on the right track. Here are my Specs: Mobo: MSI Gaming Plus x470 CPU: Ryzen 7 2700 GPU: Vega 64 (Stock) PSU: EVGA Supernova G3 750W Boot Drive: ADATA NVME 480Gb I hope I don't sound like an annoying n00b lol...
