  1. I never built a pc on my own, so I am not that comfortable but is exciting at the same time. One last question, when I go for the motherboard and it says on board video depends on CPU. Where is the integrated GPU? Is inside the CPU and do I have to buy a chip set for the integrated GPU when I order the motherboard? Sorry for the dumb question
  2. Thanks for the prompted answer I never thought to upgrade the whole motherboard, but if I can spend the same money and have all this stuff may actually be worth it. How do I now if the motherboard fits the case and the old PSU will be suitable for the new system?
  3. HI guys, I was about to upgrade a desktop PC for my parents and I need some suggestion as to not spend too much money away, for a system that has not got much left anyway. The PC is a 64-bit Medion Akoya E1006, AMD Brazos E450 dual-core CPU 1.65GHz (BGA) and 4GB (2x2GB) of DDR3 1333MHZ CL9 RAM and 1 TB of HDD. The PC boots very slowly from an installation of Windows 7 Ultimate, just to open Chrome can take up to several minutes and most of the time crashes. I had performed multiple fresh installation of Windows but over time it always gets slower and slower. I guess the problem is because of the minimum requirement of Windows where it takes 2GB of RAM just for the OS, so I think that the inboard RAM cannot take all the load and the system is left using paging/swapping file. Therefore I decided to dual-boot it with kubuntu (very light OS) since Windows has got unusable. Even though stuff got slightly better with Kubuntu is still damn slow. Now I have a small budget of £200 maximum and the only things I can upgrade on the system are RAM (up to 8GB) and add a solid state drive to use a bootable drive and keep the TB drive for storage. The computer is used by my parents, so overclocking and gaming will never be required, they only use the system to surf the internet and watch streaming sites for sports match ups, occasionally they use programs like PDF reader and Microsoft word. What brand is the most reliable for RAM stick and SSD, I was going to go for this kingston RAM or this Corsair RAM is better? For the SSD I was looking for a sata connector and low storage since I will be using it just as bootable device but I dont know what to go for since there are so many. This is the motherboard Thank you for any suggestion.
  4. Thanks for the help i created a servername.conf file in site-available folder and now works or at least i get my web site back online. The problem is that when i ping my server i get 100% packet lost. So its working but not sure if is the right way it is configure. Why would i need this new file if it was working fine without it ? EDIT: Okay I just reran the ping command and now i have 100% success, but still do not understand why i need this addition to my configuration file? I didn't change nothing until now. I was even thinking to make a virtual host configuration since I wanted to add a second domain name but now i am afraid to mess everything up
  5. After I have restarted my dedicated server I keep getting an error message whenever i restart apache2. this is the message apache2: Could not reliably determine the server's fully qualified domain name, using 2001:41d0:1:836f::1. Set the 'ServerName' directive globally to suppress this message (98)Address already in use: AH00072: make_sock: could not bind to address [::]:443 (98)Address already in use: AH00072: make_sock: could not bind to address 0.0.0.0:443 no listening sockets available, shutting down AH00015: Unable to open logs Action 'start' failed. I checked the error log and It says something about the CA certificate. I don't have a clue of what is going on since was working just fine before i rebooted. I was gussing that soem background job is using port 443 already making apache crashes when i start it, but i run the jobs and ps command and no jobs suing port 443 are running, the only thing i was using is putty itself on my local machine to connect to my server but it runs on port 22. EDIT: with the command lsof -f -n | grep https i was able to find the pid of the vpn server taking port 443 but i am still left with this error apache2: Could not reliably determine the server's fully qualified domain name, using 2001:41d0:1:836f::1. Set the 'ServerName' directive globally to suppress this message I think is about the CA certificate. I remember i created another ssl certificate so it may conflict with the server ssl certificate, I dont know i just guessing
  6. Thanks for the suggestions at the end i went for an MSI gaming laptop, these are the spec: Processor Sharkbay Intel Core i7-4710HQ 2.5GHz - 3.5GHz 4 Cores Memory 16GB DDR3 1600MHz (max) Configuration 2 x 8GB Expandable to 16GB 2 x SODIMM slot Hard Drive 1TB SATA HDD 7200rpm 128GB SSD Optical Drive None Software Operating System: Windows 8.1 64bit Display 17.3" Full HD, anti-glare LCD in LED backlight 16:9 Aspect ratio Resolution 1920 x 1080 Graphics nVidia Geforce GTX 970M - 3GB GDDR5 Audio Sound by Dynaudio Dynaudio Premium Speakers Subwoofer Microphone Input Devices Keyboard and touchpad Networking Killer E2200 LAN Card LAN Speed: 10/100/1000 Wireless 802.11 a/b/g/n Bluetooth 4.0 Dimensions Width 418 mm Length 287 mm Height 21.8 mm Weight 2.66 kg Interfaces 4 x USB 3.0 Port(s) 1 x HDMI Port(s) (v1.4) 2 x Mini Display Port(s) (v1.2) 1 x Microphone Jack(s) 1 x Headphone Jack(s) 1 x Line In Jack(s) 1 x Line Out Jack(s) 1 x LAN Card Reader Warranty / miscellaneous 2 Year Manufacturer Warranty Full HD type (30fps@1080p)
  7. Thanks for all the prompts responses, I was about to sent back the laptop because of this, but now I am more assured. So my next step is to buy a good external 3.0 usb ODD, like some of you suggested I should look at ASUS These are the spec anyway if you are curious. Processor Sharkbay Intel Core i7-4710HQ 2.5GHz - 3.5GHz 4 Cores Memory 16GB DDR3 1600MHz (max) Configuration 2 x 8GB Expandable to 16GB 2 x SODIMM slot Hard Drive 1TB SATA HDD 7200rpm 128GB SSD Optical Drive NoneSoftware Operating System: Windows 8.1 64bitDisplay 17.3" Full HD, anti-glare LCD in LED backlight 16:9 Aspect ratio Resolution 1920 x 1080 Graphics nVidia Geforce GTX 970M - 3GB GDDR5Audio Sound by Dynaudio Dynaudio Premium Speakers Subwoofer Microphone Input Devices Keyboard and touchpadNetworking Killer E2200 LAN Card LAN Speed: 10/100/1000 Wireless 802.11 a/b/g/n Bluetooth 4.0 Dimensions Width 418 mm Length 287 mm Height 21.8 mm Weight 2.66 kg Interfaces 4 x USB 3.0 Port(s) 1 x HDMI Port(s) (v1.4) 2 x Mini Display Port(s) (v1.2) 1 x Microphone Jack(s) 1 x Headphone Jack(s) 1 x Line In Jack(s) 1 x Line Out Jack(s) 1 x LAN Card Reader Warranty / miscellaneous 2 Year Manufacturer Warranty Full HD type (30fps@1080p)
  8. I am new to PC gaming, I have just bought an MSI GS70 gaming laptop. The only problem is, I do not have an optical disk drive. Now I know there are services like steam where dvds are no longer needed, but if I do want to buy a dvd and install it through an external optical drive with 3.0 usb connector, does the game need to run off the disk every single time or the disc is just meant to install the game and after I will not need to insert it anymore? And if i do need to insert the disk while playing? does an external optical disk drive 3.0 usb cable fast enough to perform like an internal drive? or at least at a level to not have any problems Thanks for any responses
  9. Hi, I apologise in advance if I have posted in the wrong thread, if so just move it in the right place, thanks. I am about to spend over a ground for a laptop and I want to make sure to not do stupid mistakes, that's why I ask you guys your opinions. The laptop in question can be customized and built for you from this site https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/notebooks/vortexIV-17/ What I am going for is: The 17.3" Vortex IV Specification Snapshot: 4th Gen Intel® Core™ CPUs Choice of Graphics Card NVIDIA® Optimus™ Multi-colour Backlit Keyboard Full HD 1920 x 1080 Res SuperSpeed USB 3.0 Premium Onkyo Speakers Fingerprint Scanner Display Port Connection HDMI Output Connection 2.0MP Webcam Wireless Fitted as Standard BluRay Capable Bluetooth Option Available Firewire Fitted as Standard e-SATA Input Connection CPU: quand core mobile i74810MQ (2.8GHz)6MB GPU: GeForce GTX 870M 6GB GDDR5 diret x 11 RAM: 16GBkingstom hyper-x inpact 1600MHz SODIMM (2x8GB) First drive: 120GB SSD kingston hyper 3k, SATA 6Gb/s Second drive: 1TB hybrid (SSHD) 64MB cache, 5400 rpm SATA 6Gb/s OS: No os chosen since I have got an orginal copy of windows 8 and I am going to install ubuntu 14.04 all together I am around £1,239 is it a good value for this system. What about downgrade the CPU to i74710MQ (2.5GHz) 6MB to save around £90 or go with 8GB of RAM instead of 16GB. Can the GPU cope with the latest games of today or do I have to go with the GTX 9xxM series, but the price rises a lot with those cards. In the combination of SSHD and SSD a good idea, because no manufacturer does offer this combo of drives (MSI does SSD+HDD) and if they do the price would be much more than mine right now. Thanks for any suggestion, my plan is to use this laptop for quite long time.
  10. Imho the ratio performance:money is not worth it, more the bandwidth and more latency (cas) you get. Yes performance wise is going to be better a DDR3 3GHz over a DDR3 2.6GHz but does not make any noticeable difference in real performance numbers, but the price does.
  11. Thanks for the help. At least now I know my NIC runs at its maximum, so I haven't really had any problems in the first place. I will mark the thread as solved.
  12. But i can not understand how my wireless connection is faster than the wired. Isn't the same NIC controlling both wired and wireless connections? if so why my wired connection is slower than the wifi (802.11n). Should I update the NIC ?
  13. Thanks for the quick replies. I tried all the cable I have, even new ones I have never used but all of them do not exceed the 100Mbps. Yeah, is it quite buggy at times Ubuntu, but I have multi OS in my laptop and I just discovered that I have the same problem even with Windows 7. Therefore It is settled that the NIC of the laptop is the main problem. I tried to find new drivers but I have the lastest version installed. I have checked the specification of my laptop, which is a Toshiba satellite c855-1tc, and i have a RJ-45 enthernet port, which I assume it support 1000Mbps. Is there any way to determine one and for all if my NIC is working at its best.
  14. Hi guys, I have a problem regarding my LAN. I have a BT Home Hub 3 with one Gbps port. Since my room is a bit far from the router I bought a pair of TP-LINK power-line adapter (estimated speed on wireless up to 300Mbps/ wired up to 500Mbps). The power line works fine but when I connect one end of the power line on the Gbps port of the Hub and connect the other end in my laptop residing in my room (running ubuntu 14.04) I can not get more than 100Mbps on a wired connection. I tried to connect directly the laptop to the router via a cat5 Ethernet cable on the Gbps port and still I get 100Mbps speed. I this point I assume that my laptop is the problem or precisely Ubuntu 14.04 (the kernel maybe?). The funny thing is that under wireless connection in my room with my wifi power-line extender I get 150Mbps more that the wired connection does. How can I fix it. Thanks.
  15. I don't get why I have got 1:5 ratio between my front side bus and sdram. I have been doing lots of calculations but none of them seemed to make sense. Does it mean i have a bottlenecked laptop? Hope someone can make things clear for me. Thanks Here some screen shots from CPU-Z:
