  1. Northern midwest America. I'd like at least a couple hours but mostly I'll be next to an outlet at almost all times so it's not a priority. I'm not doing anything with editing software or creative pursuits so the color quality of the display is not a dealbreaker but I'd like a higher resolution at least 1080p if possible.
  2. Hello, I heard from a friend that this was one of the best places to get advice on buying new computers, peripheries, and stuff like that. I'm going to be entering grad school in computational physics this upcoming fall and the laptop I was using throughout my undergrad had its ssd fail. While I assume this is not an unrecoverable failure there are many other issues that are cropping up with it and I'd rather just start fresh. I like to play many different games on my laptop but mostly strategy games (civ, paradox games, klei games, etc.) and minecraft. For my early work I'll be doing mostly work in C and Matlab on smaller scale simulations and then moving to larger scale stuff on a computing cluster so speed for the early work and gaming is something I'm looking for. I have a budget around $1000 but this is not an absolute max. I'm looking for something to last the 4-6 years that my program will last, something with at least okay storage, a good cpu and gpu, 1080p+ 15-17 in. screen, weight is not a problem, I'll mostly work on campus or at home near a plug so battery life is not a deal breaker, no tablet/touchscreen/apple products please. Thank you to everyone who can provide any help. I'm decent at using a computer but I'm totally out of my depth when it comes to getting a good deal on one.
