  1. snapshots dont work the same way, they will show all the files that were at that precise point, withouh making any difference if them were deleted or not, im running a freenas server, and im pretty sure snapshots is not what linus is using.
  2. neither the cpu or the gpu is important, as Giiman95 said, if you are planinng on a nas build any i3 would be fine for storage only, about the hdd i prefer wd reds
  3. So as the title says, I wanna know some switch recommendations. My idea is to have a fast and reliable connection in our office, we might go with fiber between our server and our switch in the future (this keeps me from selling the switch, because this one has 2x 1GB SFP Slots), we have 15 people, from which at least 3 need a fast server connection, and most of them are okey with wifi 'cos they will only work with less than 1mb files. Ideally all of them need it, but right know, and at least for the next 6 months, only 3 will be the only ones needing a fast-as-fusk connection, because they work with illustrator vector files over 200mb (I will open a topic about this on the right forum because im pretty sure they are doing sth wrong with the files that they use, they have a mess between RGB and CMYK files) My issue is that we have a, linksys jetstream 16 ports switch (it was left behind from the previous office owners) and i think that it is really overkill for our use, I wanna sell it and buy sth more suitable for our needs (with fiber optic ports). Besides the fact that I have no clue on how to make this router work, Im unable to share internet access on that particular switch, im kinda newbie on networking issues, so I can either sell it and buy another easier-to-use switch, or maybe get someone to help me out on how to make it work. Any help will be apreciated. Our network is basically a freenas, conected to the switch by a gigabit connection (i really wanna upgrade it to fiber, but i have never used fiber before any help on this topic will be really appreciated), and then the switch is connectd to an ubiquity ac lr for wifi access to our customers, some non-crucial-employees, and also connected to out internet modem, i think our modem is a cisco but i cant recall the exact model right now, some ports are being used by the 6 desktops computers, of which only 3 need a really fast connection. I have found out that if I connect a pc to the modem or the ubiquity it will be able to access the server or the internet, without any issues, but if that same pc is connected to the swith over lan it will only have access to either one of those. Another thing that i have found out is that any cable that is placed on ports 11, 13, 15, will get full connection to either the server or the internet, despite it being wired or wireless, thays why i have left connected there, the server, the cisco modem, and the ubiquity. I have no idea why this work, a friend of mine suggested that it could be related to port isolation and port forwarding on the swith, but im lost on this topic. So, making it simple i have a freenas, that needs a fast-as-fusk connection with 3 of the desktops pcs, and the others 12 pcs are okey with wifi (I will make a different post asking about CIFS performance over wifi on freenas once Im done with the cable side of this mess). My main issue is that, while being on a cable connection, im only being able to either use internet or the server i dont know why but if i access the server using a pc on using an ethernet cable, internet on that particular machine will disconnect, and i will only be able to access the server, or lets say im browsing this forum, and i access the server at the same time, i will automatically loose internet connection on that pc and get connected to the server, but as soon as i refresh any web page, internet will work, but i wont be able to access the server at the same time. I have realized that this is the issue, because if we try to move any file to the server, that same pc will be unable to access the internet while the transfer is being send, but if we refresh any webpage while the file is being send the file transfer will fail with a "network location lost" or sht like that error, but internet will work flawlessly. This only happens on wired connections, if I use the ubiquiti that is conected to the switch i can access internet or the server, both at the same time, so...i have no clue what to do, wired connections will either go to internet or the freenas, but not both at the same time, but wireless connection to the ubiquity or the internet modem will be able to do both at the same time. Anyone have any clue on what to do? Keep in mind our network config. We have a freenas, 2 desktops, 2 printers and a cisco modem that is connected to the switch, then all the other pcs, mainly notebooks are connected over the wifi connection that provides the ubiquiti A friend of mine suggested that i have to isolate the ports on the switch that are being used by the employees pc and forward them only to the server and to the internet, Any help will be apreciated, thanks in advance, and greetings from ARGENTINA!!! Sorry if my english is shit, but this is what i taught in school PD: Algun argentino ahí loco haciendole el aguante a linus y sus videitos en capital? aguante linus y luke, el hipster nuevo que antes estaba en EN SI AI EX (Argentinians only) ni me cabe
  4. I was talking to my boss about building our own nas in the office, we share some ideas, and he ended up asking me to build a nas, 3 office pcs, and 1 pc for design. So I started investigating, my first idea was to build a nas and 4 pcs, but then I remeber "8 gamers one cpu" and started considering the possibility of building one big server, for nas and virtualization for the 3 regular pcs we need, mostly for office suite use. Basically right now I'm asking for advice, do you think it will be better to build one big server, and one design pc, or should I do 5 different systems, one for the nas, 3 for the office suite pcs, and 1 for design? Possible rigs: NAS Asrock z170 extreme 4 i3 7100 16gb DDR4 NON ECC 4x2 TB WD RED 120GB SSD Seasonic 750watts Gold Office PCs: Asrock h110m OR Asrock A320M i5 7400 OR Ryzen 5 1400 8gb DDR4 240 SSD EVGA 500w Bronze For the design pc I was thinking of doing the same build as the office pc, but adding another 8gb ram and a 1060 6GB and perhaps another PSU, that pc will be mostly used for vectorial design, photo editing, and some light video editing. We will be buying some regular monitors, so nothing really fancy, same for peripherals. In the case that you think it will be better to build one big server for nas and office vm I would really appreciate any advice on parts, I have a budget of around 3kUSD. I dont have a lot of knowledge about servers, but I was thinking something with maybe a Xeon but im really lost there, so any help would be appreciate. Hope you guys can help me, I will post any progress hopefully a build log about this! PS. Im from Argentina, but I can buy from USA if its neccesary
  5. 390x is way out of my budget, here in Argentina a 390x is around 850USD while any of the other cards I listed are around 550USD. Yeah I know, pricing here really sucks, and buying outside the country is almost imposible due to taxes and customs
  6. I'm pretty sure that a 4690K wont be any bottleneck I know its newer, but it is also the slowest
  7. So I recently upgraded my rig (check my signature) and now it's time to retire my 7970, so after checking all available VGA in my country, I live in Argentina btw, ended up with three possibles choices: -780 ti EVGA SC -780 Windforce -970 Asus Strix I know that the 780ti would be the best choiche, keep in mind that I can get any of those cards at very similar prices, both 780's are used and the 970 is brand new; the problem I have is that my PSU is only 620watts and 54 amps on the 12v, so according to that I think that the 780 ti is a no go, because it requires 62 amps; 780 requires a 600 PSU so thats a limiting factor, the only seemingly right choice would be the 970. Am I correct? Keep in mind that I cannot switch to another PSU, and also keep in mind that I have my CPU overclocked. So, the question really is, can I run a 780 ti, or a 780 with my rig without running any PSU issue? Thanks in Advance
  8. sick of my 10 bucks mouse, need a new one!
  9. did you get the invitacion? i completed all the steps, but didn't get the invitation.
  10. i really like the ips screen and the brushed alluminum finish
  11. i have set my llc to high, the vcore to 1.35v and i got it to run at 4.4ghz using a corsair h100i
  12. I really like the back buttons for locking and volume control.
  13. Maybe your vrm are overheating, check temps with HWMonitor. High temp on the VRM causes throttling on heavy load situations.
