realpetertdm got a reaction from da na in Driver including rootkit malware signed by Microsoft
Source: https://www.pcgamer.com/a-driver-containing-rootkit-malware-was-certified-by-microsoft/
If you're looking for a more detailed explanation, read this article from Bleeping Computer:
https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/security/microsoft-admits-to-signing-rootkit-malware-in-supply-chain-fiasco/
TLDR
- A driver called "netfiller" was signed by Microsoft
- Said driver was communicating with China based C&C IPs that provided no legitimate functionality
- Microsoft is currently investigating this situation
- Microsoft has suspendes the account of the actor
- Microsoft recommends no additional action as of right now
Yeah... this doesn't sound good. Not at all. Rootkits and malware have always been around, but the fact that it's included in a driver signed by Microsoft is somewhat concerning.

The fact it was signed is the bigger issue here. What else was signed that shouldn't have been?!

realpetertdm got a reaction from WkdPaul in Android sends 20x more data to Google than iOS sends to Apple, study says
The article title is misleading - Android sends more data in terms of raw file size.
Also, Apple sends MAC addresses.
It's somewhat disappointing how Ars Technica has decided to use a misleading title for this article.

"crypto mining bad because it use lot of electricity so bad for environment!!1!"
proceedes to play video games on shiny graphics card that uses hundreds of watts per hour
If gamers really cared about the environment they should stop playing video games and pick up a football lmao
much more environmentally friendly and better for your health too

That's not a bad assumption.
Whether it be on PC, console, or a phone, probably 1 in 7 or 1 in 8 people games.
Yes, that's pretty accurate. Some people maybe 1 hour a day, others maybe 6 hours a day. Do the math (with more data points), and it comes out to around 4.4 hours a day.
Got any sources there bud?
Otherwise this is the perfect example of a bad argument.
GTX 680? Fancy fancy. Try running a GTX 650 Ti BOOST 2GB and tell me what you think.

Sounds familiar?
As for mining energy usage

127 TWh of mining
Compared to 75TWh of gaming... In 2012 (it has grown since, estimated in the article is double by 2020, assuming no pandemic)
Not too far off amirite?
Steam 2012: 5 million concurrent users
Steam 2021: 25 million concurrent users
Maybe it's a little bit more than doubled...

actually... football requires manufacturing of the ball and the land used for a football field isnt small either so... there's still quite a significant environmental impact
the best way to reduce energy use is to murder every living being on earth, because metabolism is a thing and it uses a lot of energy
now you may argue that human life is worth way more, but your life means nothing to me unless i get to know you, i couldnt care less if you died today or tomorrow, to be absolutely frank.
so you being alive is a waste of energy in my eyes 👀
that doesn't mean i want you dead though
and by 'you' i mean the general population, not the person i quoted ❤️ though you may or may not fall into that category as well, and yes im chaotic neutral

Apparently I could make $3.50 a day with my GTX 1080. Nice. I won't bother though, since I'd only get to mine about 8 hours a day, and the $1-2/day isn't that worth it to me. For what it's worth @LinusTech I don't have a problem with this sponsorship. You've made your point about crypto mining with nicehash very clear over the past few months:
If you already own the card You are using electrical resistance heating anyway It's cold where you live go for it and that is 100% sane and reasonable as a position. The people trying to say 'hurr durr teh environmentalezes!' are the same people who think Nestle bottled water is fine, and that their iPhone wasn't make with help from literal Chinese slave labor. The people trying to rip you up for this piece only care about being mad. I think you're smart enough to realize it, but I wanted to pass along my thoughts as well.
One thing you maybe shoulda mentioned for your US audience though is that the IRS considers mined coins 'found money' and you DO have to declare it on your taxes. :p

So gamers are the ones who deserve cards because they are special?
Look, I don't like mining but I don't really care about this, it's cool and where are people going to even buy cards these days to amp up their mining experience? There are MANY factors at play for the current shortage, miners maybe being one of them but not the only one, not by a long shot. So you can be a pissed kid all you want because LTT is showing people how they could make a bit of money if they wanted, had they said anything about buying cards for this purpose you would have a point but they didn't.
