You are saying "Everyone", no it is not everyone. That is definitely not the case for my employer, Google. For Google and many other top tech companies, you can negotiate for higher salaries or bonuses and use your previous experience (or other things, like competing offers) as leverage. A new hire can be have a higher compensation than you (assuming hired at the same level), even if you have been at the company for several years. Or, of course, you can choose not to negotiate. The point is, it is not "everyone" that starts off at the bottom of the ladder. It would be pretty asinine if the norm was to have some 10 YOE engineer starts as entry level and has to work his way up to senior level upon getting hired at the company.

If this is a foreign concept for the company you work for, then you work for a shitty company (even if they make awesome products). It is a completely different issue.

OK with me if either 1) they are at the same level, 2) this 17.50$ increase is the result of a company wide increase, or 3) the salary increase is a result of the industry wide average salary. It took me ~ 2 years to get promoted (which maps to a ~80-90k USD yearly compensation increase) at my company, but there are a few exceptional new grads that get hired straight into that level, and I have no problem with that. Just because it took me X years to get to some level (not just level on paper, but level in terms of actual skill), doesn't mean it will take everyone the same amount of time. Simply put, some people are just better, they don't need the same amount of training / years of experience to get up to your skill level.

My question is is that legal up there in America's hat?

Well this turned into a soapbox, sorry. Also join the military the pay is excellent just learn how to balance a budget.

In the US it's federal law that wages can be discussed amongst workers and anyone regardless of any "policy" the business has.

I would think something like this would be a common law in any first world country. Like the Magnuson–Moss Warranty Act that is the same in the US as it is in Canada and from what I can tell it's the same for the EU as well.

This is why I like working for the federal government anyone can see how much I make and that's the way it should be (E7, 19 years). I DGAF, also it allows for people to see how I am able to live the extravagant lifestyle I have. I should be able to Google random business x, worker title x pay is this.

Pay transparency should be a lot more common that it currently is. I mean I don't care how much the Jones' nextdoor make to live like that but if I did I'd know they were drowning in debt because they don't get paid shot 😂

Now you can make the argument that people in the same position one may get paid more than the other and in the civilian world that makes sense based on stuff like Jane has more responsibility than Dave type of situations. But in the army we just put people with more rank in higher positions of authority thus means Susan makes more than Johnny because she is a Staff Sergeant and Johnny is a Sergeant. Regardless people should be allowed to discuss their pay that way they can understand why they make less than someone else and can work to show they should be that person's peer in pay.

Also sometimes peers will have different workloads. Like I currently have a very chill position that doesn't require a hell of a lot of work, and I get to drive around and just talk to people and help solve their problems all day. But some other SFC (peers) have a large workload and are constantly working hard. However, the majority of the time the guy that's working harder, usually is short staffed or is very bad at delegating tasks. Even in all the other positions I've held in the last 20 years I will delegate that way the workload is separated according to rank/position and I mean plenty of time since some work that was several steps below my grade but it's good to be in the trenches with the people you are in charge of. It keeps you grounded and up to snuff on the basics and also shows your subordinates that you know what you're talking about when you say to do something a certain way.

it would be me like going on linustechtips or /r/pcmasterrace a lot and seeing everyone (mostly) prefers PCs over consoles, and I just assume society as a whole heavily favors PCs over consoles. That would be wrong assumption because a ton of people still play on consoles... that would be an example of an echo chamber

Speedstack79 reacted to GoodBytes in Are software developers and software engineers the same thing?
Computer Science and Software Engineer are both University degrees (I guess you call them College in the U.S), basically a Bachelor degree. Programmer are not in demand, especially that these days they just outsource thing to other countries, and websites are fairly complicated that even web programming requires more advanced skills, especially with phones (I am talking about web apps, and nice animated sites with lots of database queries and such, like a big website). Not by itself anyways. You can use it as a degree to compliment an IT degree, for example. Great for giving you the knowledge and certification needed to do simple internal software like custom mini-tools to do things, or custom ticketing system and such, or do website maintenance, etc.
Software Engineer / Computer Science is where it is at. Those are in high demand, and requires a good education (hence why it is not really outsourced, when it is done, it shows left and right). It must be noted that doing either degrees, especially Computer Science, is not easy. Knowing programming languages in advance doesn't really help. It helps your programming classes sure, but those are actually few in your degree. The rest requires hard work.
If it was easy, then there would be no lack of need.
What gets your first job out of university, or internship:
-> Personal Projects, personal projects, and more personal projects. Best way to show your skills, knowledge, show that you are really interested in software developing, show your originality.
-> Good grade. If you want to go in medical field to any level or financial, they want grade more than anything.
    Hope this helps
