Mobile devices evolved by leaps and bounds in the late 2000s / early 2010s.

I know what is verified I was asking what games would have good fps. A lot of games are verified but does not mean it will run well on it, I want to know if I can play AAA singleplayer games on it with a reasonable fps or if it will be low fps and pixelated as hell to be able to play it at all.

Why not just use a PC (I have one hooked to my TV in the living room)?  Pretty much all those devices or emulation is definitely not legal, especially if you don't even own the games.

That aside, I'll say I use emulation a fair amount as it's easier (and I have a large physical collection of games and consoles). That being said you'll still come across games that still work better on the original hardware. The example I typically give people is PunchOut on the NES. It's just not frame perfect on emulation, and it makes a difference.

For emulation I use USB controllers (not all I have but many of them):

However there are some games that have specialty controllers where they are just better with those controllers, which makes it better on original hardware. (Games that use Atari paddle controllers for example).

Just a thought, as the PC might be more useful than a bunch of individual retro consoles that are just emulation boxes anyways.

Some people don't have the time or interest in maintaining their PCs. They expect them to just work and if something doesn't, they hand it of to a friend who knows what they're doing or to an expert. Same thing with cars. If you can't be bothered to deal with maintenance and repairs yourself, you hand it off to someone else or just deal with the fact that it'll eventually deteriorate to the point of not being usable anymore. You have to realize that not everything you are interested in is as interesting to everybody else. People aren't a hivemind. For every person you find who is enthusiastic about the same thing as you, you'll find a dozen who couldn't care less. So why bother lamenting other people's inabilities to care for something? They don't care. Why should you? Use your time better than that.

rikitikitavi reacted to Alex Atkin UK in Sadness for non-technical users.
I'm a technical user, and I've never bothered to replace thermal paste on my laptop.  I feel the importance of this is grossly overblown and people who see huge improvements are very niche cases.

As for enabling XMP, considering the type of user you are talking about, you already pointed out that they are more likely to buy a laptop so this point is redundant.  This kind of person buying a pre-built, you'd hope the manufacturer already enabled XMP and would they even notice the performance difference in using JEDEC timings in the first place?

I mean sure, a novice user is paying through the nose for simple fixes - the same as any other tool.  I know that if I maintain my bicycle myself I can save a fortune, but I'd rather just pay someone else to do it.  A lot of people don't WANT to know how to fix their own things, they have better things to do with their time.

Quite frankly as I'm getting older, I'd rather things "just work" than the stress of trying to fix problems.

My bigger concern with the average user is them trusting their device manufacturer.  For example I tried to offer my services to backup my cousins photos and her response was "its okay, I use iCloud".  Plus the sheer number of security issues people are blissfully unaware of.

This is not going to change sadly, most people aren't problem solvers or technically minded in general, they just want to get on with their lives and not have to think about how any of the tech works.

rikitikitavi reacted to Eigenvektor in Why did you build a PC?
Finding a pre-built that contains exactly what I want will take a ton of time.

Outside of headline features like what type of CPU or GPU they contain they also tend to skimp out on other parts.

Easier to just build my own with the parts I want. This was I get to decide where the money goes and where I might be fine cheaping out.

Besides, it's really not that hard, and if you don't want to assemble you could always use the build service most retailers offer.

Depends. If all you do is play games, then a console might be a better choice.

If you need a computer for other tasks anyway, it's no longer a choice between PC and console, but rather PC vs cheap PC + console

Do you mean buying any computer or building a computer? Because he should not be afraid to buy a preassembled (aka ready-to-go) one, especially a new one, since if anything is wrong he should be able to mail it back for a return or exchange.

    For example:

Depending on the games - you can go even cheaper.

    ...

    Also:
    - a laptop might be a better solution or all-in-one - so your dad won't have to connect the cords.
    - a tablet (an iPad for example) might be a better choice in some cases, if browsing the web, watching movies and playing random game is all that is needed.

the iPad pro 12" has 2732 x 2048, but 4k is 4096 x 2160, so it's not rlly 4k, but at this pixel density you wouldn't notice a difference between this and 4k, unless you really try. It's this specific resolution, because apple makes "retina" displays, so the displays look the best they can at a regular viewing distance, basically a higher resolution wouldn't make sense here

rikitikitavi reacted to Eigenvektor in iPad 4k?
For the sake of comparison, your typical 16:9 monitor with "4K UHD" uses 3840 × 2160 pixels. (4096 x 2160 is DCI 4K).

At 32" that is a pixel density of 138 ppi, so a fair bit lower than the iPad.

Of course your viewing distance is usually farther away, so it's likely the same clarity.

Some of the main PC hardware sites in the UK:
    - Scan
    - Ebuyer
    - Overclockers.co.uk
    - Amazon (be careful of third party sellers and also getting an empty box or a box with a brick in it, due to returns abuse)
    - Currys
and previously: CCL Computers & Box.co.uk

For prebuilds, since you're really just looking for a decent desktop PC, I'd take them from anyone, even the likes of Dell or Acer if the price is good. You could also consider a pre-assembled bundle (CPU+board+RAM+CPU cooler) if you're comfortable screwing it into a case.

For CPUs, if you want a PC that can fit in a compact case and play games without a graphics card (mainly older games, or browser games) then look at:
    - 5600G/5700G
    or
    - 8600G/8700G

Recent reviews can be found on Hardware Unboxed (YouTube), or Gamers Nexus (YouTube) and TPU.

If the gaming use is very basic, e.g. point and click or simple indie games, then any Intel 12th-14th gen (EXCEPT -F) or AMD 7000 (EXCEPT -F) are also sufficient, but don't try loading up a recent game like BG3 on one of these.

If you want some more serious gaming (with a separate graphics card), then I'd suggest:
    - Ryzen 5600 or Core i5-12400
    - Ryzen 7500F or 7600 (this would have more future upgradability)

    Graphics:
    - Entry 1440p: 6500 XT or 3050 6GB
    - 1080p - RX 6600 or 3060/4060
    - Entry 1440p - RX 6700 XT, RX 6800, or 3060/4060 Ti
    - 1440p - 7800 XT or 4070

I doubt anything better than that is worthwhile, but you could clarify exactly what kind of games (or name some specific games).

From what you describe, those specs are way overkill and even though you consider the RAM the one that is overkill, that's actually the one part I'd keep 😂

I'd look at a prebuilt PC with a 8600G or 8700G, which would suffice for some mild gaming.

The i5-12400 and i5-12600K are currently on offer (£135 and £180) and I don't think there's any point buying better than that for a desktop PC. Not only that, but you only need modest air cooling for these CPUs, whereas an i9 will need something much beefier.

With OEM prebuilt PCs, if you're happy enough to put in a new M.2 or SATA drive, or add some memory, you'll often find that it increases the price unreasonably to have large capacity (either RAM or storage) and pushes you into buying something higher-end than you need.

If I really needed a bigger display I would just hook up the laptop to a monitor. Honestly if you hook up a keyboard and mouse as well then you can usually use a laptop like a desktop. Also keep in mind that there are portable monitors if you are concerned about portability. Also you can use it in conjunction with your laptop screen to run a 2 monitor solution giving way more space.

Honestly, same path as any other addiction. You have to identify what's triggering you to go to these apps and address those problems. Addiction is not and has never been about the specific drug, it's a mental health issue. There are stressors in your life that your brain is trying to hide from, address those and you should be able to easily kick the habit and even indulge in them in healthy ways.
I personally have found Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (guided by a therapist) coupled with mindfulness meditation (I like square breathing) to be a very powerful set of tools for keeping my brain in check. Even after dealing with all of the (honestly remarkably mild) trauma in my life, just having a professional listener to talk to every month helps keep me on balance. A couple years ago I added some Vitamin D3 (2000IU) to the mix and these days I'm pretty happy.

As long as you implement the limitations yourself and have the power to get around them, you will always find a reason why "this time" an exception is warranted. You'd need (someone else) to enable parental controls where you don't know the password to get around them. Of course that's not necessarily practical or even acceptable.

You can try to impose a curfew on yourself where you shut down your phone at a certain time. Outside of emergencies, no turning it back on until the next morning. Of course, like any other solution, it will effectively boil down to self-control (or lack thereof).

It might be more effective to find a hobby or other "distraction" that you can concentrate on, rather than your phone. For me personally, both sports and reading works to get me doing something else. Also a fixed time limit in the evening when devices get shut down. But it will take effort, especially initially, to force yourself to do that.

But to the point and again as a dad, your asking the right question but in the wrong way. It's not a matter of getting them to stop playing a game because you won't play it, it is amatter of introducing something you want to share with them that they will be willing to participate with you. Stop thinking about your wants but what they are willing to accept about you and what your sharing.

Imagine calling your kid an NPC for playing something she enjoys while at the same time complaining that she won't just play the stuff you, the main character, are interested in. The gall of your kid having their own personality and interests separate from her parents, total NPC behavior right there. I hope the dripping sarcasm is obvious enough.
