A lawyers perspective on this event:

Notice how Will found the joke to be funny until Jada rolled her eyes and appeared to whisper something at him. Next thing you know, he's storming up on stage to commit assault. I will also mention that it is public knowledge that his wife...let's just say, she sees their marriage as an 'open relationship'
Skit or not, it was tasteless and shameful. I get defending your wife, but this was a (rather weak) GI Jane joke that wasn't worth assulting another man over. I will say, Chris Rock kept his composure pretty well. He was the bigger man.
And these are the people we should look up to?
How far we have fallen.

The most disturbing thing about this is the reaction from normal people. There are all these wannabe macho men saying they would do the same thing and this is how "real men" act.
Look at this poll. It's seriously frightening.

Well, you can take the man out of the ghetto, but you can't take the ghetto out of the man.
Had anyone else had done that, god forbid if he were white or any race for the matter, it'd be an instant arrest and lifetime ban. That he was applauded and lauded for his win only shows how hypocritical Hollywood is. Such behavior, and the man himself should NOT be tolerated, yet the man is admired? How far have Hollywood, and us in general, fallen. I can only say that I, on my part, will avoid any more Will Smith movies henceforth.
No matter what Chris Rock had joked about, btw did anyone catch Jada's reaction to the joke?, it is no excuse to hit someone.

Probrably was staged, the ratings for the Oscars has been falling off over time and maybe this was a stunt to "Boost" ratings with some controversy, Springer-style.
Woudn't doubt it for a sec.

It is all staged. They're all artists, masters of lie and deception.

steelo reacted to RasmusDC in [NSFW] Can anybody explain WTF this was all about?
it was a poor joke, fair enough. But it is also an assault, and Will should have been escorted away, and NOT given an Oscar in the end.
Yes.. looks like Chris Rock has used Jada quite a lot as the "butt" of his jokes, but to be honest, the way she moves herself forward, and also portraits relationsship will an herself, i guess she does put herself in the spotlight, and that has always been a "green light" to be "made fun off" in theese events.
This is just not okay, and i had to pinch myself to see if this was not just staged, to make the oscars relevent again, WELL as a Jerry Seinfeld show.
Seriously THIS is not okay, but there are SO many things that is not okay in the world today, that we accept, based on either the money or fame people have.. at least with Clarkson, they fired his ass.. although in the end that ended up make him even richer.

I am not arguing that deprioritizing Russian propaganda is a bad thing. However, as I and several others have stated, this is a very slippery slope. It is all too easy for a corporation to see a certain political side as 'evil' or 'misinformed' and therefore label everything they say as 'disinformation'. This often is based on the cancel culture we are currently living in...ban the speech from the people we don't like or we will boycott and harass you into submission...Of course there ARE situations where hate speech that presents a danger to society should be banned.
You keep mentioning that you feel my posts are politically based. To an extent, they are. In my opinion, it is imperative that (American) society have free speech to share information, even if a certain group dislikes this information. And yes this includes information that goes against my personal beliefs as well. I have faith that the majority of my fellow neighbors will do their research and come to an intelligent conclusion without a tech corporation skewing results and essentially making the decision for them.
They are playing a dangerous game when it comes to information gatekeeping.

steelo got a reaction from RAM555789 in Computer wont boot but ssd is good (i think)
The most straightfoward solution if you're confident the ssd has an OS and the boot sequence is correct would be to reinstall windows from a usb. Sounds like the mbr may be corrupted.

steelo reacted to RAM555789 in Download Win11 or use usb I just bought?
The activation codes you buy for around ~20 are usually OEM keys. These get tied to the motherboard and are only usable once. A retail key is not locked to the motherboard and can be moved around 5 times (if I remember correctly) not sure though, if a Windows account cares, which type of key you used. I think Linus did a video on keys for windows 10 and I don't think anything has changed since.

steelo got a reaction from dizmo in Looking for a budget upgrade for an older PC
Your pci-e slots aren't gen 1... Your main issue with upgrading the gpu will be the cpu bottlenecking...especially with 1080p resolutions that are usually highly dependent on the cpu.
You COULD upgrade to a rx 6600xt and use it again later on after you build a new system. However, I doubt your gpu will ever hit 100% utilization with that cpu.

Your slots definitely aren't gen 1. IIRC they're probably gen 3. You'll be fine.
Welcome to the forum.

Wow... sounds like a lot of people on here are bitter/jealous. Just congratulate the guy on a fun build and move on, people. There will always be those who criticize, but I expected better of some of the veteran members...

steelo got a reaction from da na in What's everyone's opinion on Windows 11?
That was one of my main gripes, the 'new and improved' start menu seemed to make it even HARDER to access the apps you want.

steelo reacted to da na in What's everyone's opinion on Windows 11?
I absolutely hate it. Used it for about a month on my Ryzen 5 laptop. I'm never switching over my Xeon e5 workstation, not just because of CPU incompatibility but becuase I hate all of the design decisions, mainly hiding every useful option behind the "More" in the right click menu... not a big thing but it wastes my time.

steelo got a reaction from Hevalisk in Is this a decent price for this monitor? 24 inch IPS 1080p 144hz
That's a halfway decent price for a new 144hz 24" monitor....you could probably shop around or check out best buy specials and find a comparable monitor for $20-$30 cheaper.

steelo reacted to RONOTHAN## in Is this a decent price for this monitor? 24 inch IPS 1080p 144hz
Look on the used market, I've seen similar panels sell for about $100. For a new monitor you aren't gonna do a ton better, but you an usually find someone who upgraded to 4k 144hz trying to flip their old monitor for dirt cheap, just to get it out of the house

It can also be nice to see what kind of propaganda is being pushed, as that is good information in itself.
Depending on what it is, and if one can tell it's propaganda that is pushed by x group or nation.
Also legitimate "news sources", is being push back on and sometimes hide the truth like in this current war, then again bots are able to push through with mixed information or important information.

The problem with "fighting disinformation" is there is always someone making that decision for you...

One of the main appeals of ddg was that they claimed not to skew or downgrade search results. Yes, I don't care to read Russian disinformation, but WHO decides what is disinformation and what is not? This is a dangerous path, especially when politics are so polarized right now.

steelo reacted to Needfuldoer in Will the price of used and new cars go down?
I think that was more because the industry made a wrong turn than an inherent problem with the technology. Humans have metallurgy pretty well figured out. We can make a small engine with adequate power for less cost than a gigantic battery pack full of exotic, somewhat unstable chemicals.
The biggest problem they faced was marketing. Cars are almost universally marketed to the lower brain. "GRR SUCH POWER BIG NUMBERS WOW!" moves a lot more units than appealing to Vulcan practicality. "This is 'MERICA, we don't drive wussy little tiny cars with weed whacker engines, we drive big tough lifted quad cab F-30000s, muscle cars, and Jeeps with constipated Darth Vader grilles on them! How can a hybrid be any fun to drive?! Hybrids are like those Priuses I smoke out with my diesel tune!" I think that's why Tesla pushed the performance and driving dynamics of their cars first and foremost, then everyone else started copying them.
I've had a second-gen Volt for four years. When people ask me about it, explaining "it's an electric car that has a gas generator built in" goes one of two ways: Usually I'll get a befuddled "but if it's electric, why would you put gas in it?" or "then why not just get a regular car?". But sometimes they'll completely 'get it', and I've actually gotten at least a couple others on board.
The other problem was that they went all-in on small cars with limited market appeal. The second-gen Volt, for example, shouldn't even exist. It should have been a powertrain option for the Chevy Equinox, its crossover cousin on the same platform. The only other cars the Voltec hybrid powertrain wound up in were the Malibu hybrid (which has a tiny battery and doesn't plug in) and the Cadillac ELR (a tarted-up first gen Volt). One sedan (a dying market segment) and a lambasted version of an already niche car. Few units sold means few units to amortize the R&D costs across.
That limited market appeal doomed the plug-in hybrid concept to a footnote on the path to battery electric cars. The RAV4 Prime is basically the only example left of where I think the market should've gone: EV-ish versions of the cars people actually buy.
There are first-gen Volts out there with 200,000 miles or more on them, with minimal battery degradation. Adequate thermal management and over-provisioning the battery increase the pack's life dramatically. The reason so many early Nissan Leaf batteries wore out fast is because they were air cooled, so the batteries got too hot and lost capacity. The Volt (and I believe the Prius Prime and Rav4 Prime) all have liquid-cooled batteries. They also keep themselves charged between 20% and 80%, never filling the pack completely to capacity. That lets you get more charge/discharge cycles out of a battery before it starts losing total capacity.

steelo got a reaction from Oshino Shinobu in Will the price of used and new cars go down?
I also fear that there will be catastophic accidents resulting in batteries exploding upon impact. A vehicle loaded with 600 lbs of lipo batteries is perhaps more dangerous than a car laoded with gasoline.

It's a shame because it seemed to be the best mobile browser while (supposedly) protecting your data and not skewing search results.
