One of our development teams mandates MacBook Pros running Windows 10.  Don't ask, but it makes absolutely no sense and is a complete waste of money, given they don't ever log in to OSX.  That being said, it works perfectly fine.

Updates all drivers. Check your event viewer for driver and application failures. Error logs will show you the way, young gamer.

I have 400 servers around the world.  3 are physical and the rest are virtual, either cloud-hosted in AWS or running on a vBlock.  No idea why there's still so much misinformation about virtualization.  It's 2019.

The whole web and 95% of on-premise servers run virtualized nowadays

Who said RAID5 isn't a good solution?  If you only had one drive die and it was replaced, you should be fine.  The array should rebuild.  If not, you either swapped the wrong drive or you had a controller failure.  RAID5 is perfectly fine for a home server, but RAID never was and never is a backup solution.

No. It will restart. Sleep store info in RAM which loses power when unplugged. Hibernate write that info to disk.

DeaconFrost reacted to DogKnight in Can I run VM servers?
Alternatively, if you want a simple option and don't need to run VM's, you could buy a dedicated NAS from a company like Synology. These often have a wide range of apps preinstalled with many more you can download. All the functionality you mentioned I can do on either my Netgear or Synology NAS. Just not simultaneously as mine aren't spec'd high enough. More powerful models are available with higher specs and could handle that workload fairly easily.
Unless you want to get into the setting up a hypervisor and multiple VM's as a learning experience, I would just go with a dedicated NAS as it would be much simpler and almost definitely more power efficient.

x99 with xeons works fairly well with Reg ECC. Pretty sure all asus boards at least, I've heard some got it to work on pretty much any board even.

It still works.  I gave my brother-in-law a few old keys last week to use, and they all activated.

Thanks for the information.  I wouldn't be buying one.  They are unused laptops that have been replaced at work, so I was thinking of claiming one to play around with.

Anyone running RAID5 in the enterprise has warranties on those drives and at least a one spare.  That's standard practice.  I have 4 drives running in RAID5 in a Synology NAS at home, and even I have a cold spare on the shelf.

As for any RAID...it's not a backup.  It never was, and never should be treated that way.  If you do, you've already set yourself up to fail.

All cases I know that comes with PSU was crappy cheap cases with crappy PSU. So don't worry about wattage, be worried about quality of that PSU. Except it's some premium case made by Antec or BeQuiet etc.

Maybe is my adulthood talking as a 40-year-old, but I can't imagine bashing an OS and refusing to use it because something was wrong with my third-party, unsupported theme applications didn't work as expected.  Do you really need custom folder icons to make a computer functional?

I was forced to update from Win8.1 to Win10 because Adobe was no longer supporting photo apps on Win8.1.  I bought Win10 Pro and configured the updates to delay install by an appropriate amount of time until bugs have been worked out.  I did a fresh install of Win10 on a new SSD and everything went just fine using the MSFT downloaded install ISO.  I have had zero issues with Windows and was surprised at how little disk space it takes up.  As far as the telemetry issue goes, I could care less.  So much of my stuff is already out on the Internet (though I have stayed completely away from Facebook) and it's pretty difficult to stay 100% anonymous these days.  there are a lot of other things to be worried about these days than what Win10 does or doesn't do.

DeaconFrost reacted to Jarsky in LSI 9211 8i with Unraid
Correct unRAID has its own software RAID solution.
9211 isnt a proper RAID card, its primarly just a basic HBA. The only RAID you should ever really do on these types of cards is a basic RAID1 or RAID0.
The 926x/927x is the RAID version of the card with memory, cache battery, etc....for more advanced RAID like RAID5/6/50/60

For the likes of unRAID, FreeNAS, ZFSonLinux, MDADM, StorageSpaces, etc... (software RAID) you just use it in HBA passthrough (IT) mode

There's no way of telling if it was on a domain or not.  I don't think domains are common in schools, like they are in the corporate world.

If you have no access to any of the accounts, then bar far, the easiest method is to make a bootable USB drive for Windows 10 or Linux, whichever you prefer, wipe the hard drive clean and clean install the OS of choice.  Dell's are very easy to find drivers for, assuming you are using Windows.

I hate making assumptions, but it sounds like you might be new at this.  Great opportunity to have a friend show you as a learning experience.

DeaconFrost reacted to Chunchunmaru_ in Need Help with Raspbian SFTP Permission (Noob)
Every file/folder on UNIX has an user:group permission set, but can also have a single user or a single group
    For example

    -rw-r--r-- 1 foo:bar FOLDER1 tells us that FOLDER1 belongs to foo(user):bar(group)
let's say in /etc/group you got this

    bar:x:1:user1,user2,user3

those 3 users belonging to the bar group can has the overall group permission

depending on the SECOND permission set you got on that file, you have only the r as you can see in the second file permission, -rw-r--r-- means the group you specified can only read access

    So, TL;DR
that file/folder you want to give access to the guest group you need to "sudo chown *user*:guest *filename*" and then you need to set the second permission set with chmod
