It's not like the GPU is going to suddenly die, and you can always get your money back if it does potentially.

Most RTX 2070's overclock and can pretty much match a 1080ti. Mine does.

rtx 2060 isn't going to hit 1440p 144hz maxed out settings, even a 2070 maxed out won't in most games. Your looking at 2080 or higher if you want to be at or above 144fps

Yes lad, but that’s like 2 years old and many more hours have been released since then.

Take a look at the Aero 15, you might be able to snag one of those on sale for a price close to your budget
Otherwise, I hate to say it, the GS65 may fit your needs just as well.
Though the keyboard and trackpad suck

Thermal pads have silicone grease in them, and that stuff can creep over time if they are cheap pads.

Look at the core in image 4, the thermal paste was not 100% covering the core when the cooler was removed.

No.  Look at the dry ring around the core.  Good coverage does not leave a gap like that with any thermal paste.  On a GPU you want 100%+ coverage, as there is no heat spreader.

If you're looking at the price range of the 1700x, go for the i5 9400F for the same price and a huge performance boost. If you're looking at the 2700x, then the 9600k for about the same price will be a boost.

    Otherwise, solid build.

Either it decided to die, or the power supply killed it, which is much more unlikely

You could see if lowering memory or core clock speeds does anything

The thermal paste was not covering the whole core.  It is likely a core failure due to excessive hot-spot temps.

So, I'm saving up to build a beast gaming PC, and this is going to be my first build. I am doing it with a friend who has built computers and workstations before. I will be playing and doing some streaming with this PC. I was going to go with an i7 8700k, but he recommended a Ryzen 7 1700x, but I saw Linus substituting a 2700x Ryzen 7 for an 8700k i7, so should I go with the 2700x instead? I also need help with figuring out if my case will be good for the motherboard I'm purchasing. Along with this I was wondering if people had any good tips and would recommend any cooling for my PC, if I should buy more fans, and also any controllers that would help with RGB and other quality of life improvements for making this process smooth. Thanks in advance! Below I'll show what specs I'm currently looking at with their prices.

    2070 - 499.99
    AMD Ryzen 7 1700x - 169.99
MSI B450 Gaming Pro Carbon AC AM4 ATX Motherboard- 129.99
    NZXT H700i - 197 https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?item=N82E16811146273
    Corsair Vengeance 16gb - 103.99
    WD Blue 3D NAND 2TB Internal SSD - 239.99
    EVGA 750W 80+ Gold - 99.53
Corsair H100i Hydro Series Platinum Processor Liquid Cooling 120mm - 159.99
    Windows 10 Home - 139.99

You can utilize nVidia with an AMD chip and vice verse. That's not why.
Really the 1660 and 590 are on par. If you can get a 1660Ti, I'd spring for it.

That said whichever is the better price is what I'd go with.

The extra VRAM doesn't really make a difference tbh, you're not gonna max out 6GB on a 1660. 1660 performs slightly better than 590 as well, and is slightly cheaper for OP. Agree with the RAM thing(unless price difference is negligible)

You can enable freesync on Nvidia GPUs which is good enough, since gsync monitors are super overpriced.

Agree on the RAM bit, would recommend 16GB more than 8GB at this calibre of build.
