Hi there, a friend of mine approached me regarding images stored on a 2005-ish desktop pc supposedly running Windows Xp or Windows Vista. The machine spent the last 15 years in various basements and hasn't been turned on ever since. My friend does not own a monitor with a VGA connection so I was considering getting a cheap IDE to USB adapter to be able to transfer the images directly from the harddrive to another system. In addition to the hardware shortcomings he also mentioned to me that the system might have a virus on it. I thought about setting up a Bootcamp partition on a MacBook to transfer the data, run malware bytes and similar software on the files, transfer them to his computer and erase the partition afterwards. Any ideas/ comments, if this is an advisable course of action? Thanks y'all

Hi, I am a longtime owner of a trusty Western Digital My Book Studio Edition II 2 TB. Unfortunately space is starting to run out and I am looking to replace the two 1 TB drives with two 2 TB drives. My Google searches lead me to believe that I must use two identical drives as replacements, which should ideally be Western Digital greens as well. Can anyone tell which drives are known to be compatible with the enclosure? Thanks in advance! Ron

HP 17-by0114ng wrecked hinge
ronfouchier replied to ronfouchier's topic in Laptops and Pre-Built Systems
Dear @Needfuldoer, thank you for your response . Unfortunately the laptop is not under warranty anymore. Having read online about similar issues, I think this will turn into a desktop with a second screen attached and no more movement involved. -
Hi there, the laptop of my girlfriend's mother spontaneously decided to disintegrate leaving the screen and chassis loosely connected. Unfortunately googling the model number + hinge did not provide any clues, if or how the laptop can be put back together. Please note, that the laptop gets gently opened and closed once per day and is about 15 months old. My cousins ran into the same issue with two other HP laptops, so I am wondering if this is a known HP issue? Any tipps or help are greatly appreciated.

Hey there, my 2013 build recently started to struggle with current titles such as Fortnite and especially World War Z. My setup looks like this: CPU: Intel Core i5-4570 3,2 Ghz GPU: Sapphire RX 580 Nitro+ 8GB RAM: Crucial DDR3 16 GB RAM 1600 Mhz Motherboard: Gigabyte H87-HD3 Case: Bitfenix Shinobi Power Supply: Be Quiet 430 watt Screen resolution: 1080p I could get an i7-4790 for ~ 50€ and am wondering, if the investment would be worthwhile? My friends and I don't play that many current games (mostly old strategy titles [Star Craft 2, Age of Empires 2,3 & HD, Supreme Commander] and a few shooters [CS:GO, Rainbox 6 Siege] and all Trials games). My primary goal would be to extend the life of my current system and to upgrade the entire rig, once/if hardware prices normalize. Thanks for your input . Ron

Crucial BX300 480GB randomly disappears
ronfouchier replied to ronfouchier's topic in Storage Devices
Firmware updates were not possible because the Storage Executive would either display "latest firmware installed" or "firmware error" messages. I had been using the drive in a hot-swappable drive cage and an external usb enclosure. Turns out that attaching the ssd directly to the mainboard/ power supply did the trick. The ssd is now reliably detected by Windows and can be read/written to by the os. No more error messages in the Crucial Storage Executive software either. -
Hey folks, my Crucial BX300 480GB randomly started disappearing as a Windows drive last week. I subsequently ran CrsystalDiskInfo which let me know, that the drive is just fine. Unfortunately the drive keeps disapprearing and the Crucial Storage Executive shows a firmware error warning every once in a while, when the drive is properly mounted. I popped the drive into an external USB case and got these figures, when I ran Amorphous DiskMark 3.1 on macOS. Interestingly the drive does not disappear when using macOS. Any ideas what propmts this behaviour? Using the same external USB case the drive will still disappear, when mounted to different Windows laptops/desktops. I already got in touch with Crucial support who told me that I am SOL since the warranty expired the months ago. Cheers, Ron

Hello there, since my previous posts yielded such helpful feedback I'm trying my luck one more time. This time a friend wants to upgrade their trusty Acer Aspire ES1-572 with additional RAM and an SSD. I already found a fitting drive, but am uncertain about the paricular RAM needed for this machine. One of the RAM banks is currently occupied with a MTA4ATF51264HZ-2G3B1 4GB 260Pin SO-DIMM DDR4 stick. Unfortunately I am not able to locate this particular RAM on the cheap which is why I was wondering, if any of the following offerings would be compatible with the machine: - 4GB 1rx16 pc4-2400t-sc0-1, MTA4ATF51264HZ - SO-DIMM 4GB MICRON PC4-2400T-SC0-11 MTA4ATF51264HZ-2G3B2 - Micron 8GB DDR4-RAM (2 x 4GB) DDR4-2666 SO-DIMM - 2x 4 GB (MTA4ATF51264HZ-2G6E3) Thanks so much in advance . @dhannemon13@jaslion Thank you! Odered a couple of webcams in order to be able to compare their quality and so far no additional drivers were needed. Just like you said .

Hi there, I am looking for a webcam, which does not require the installation of additional software in order to function properly. Due to the pandemic I find myself working more and more from home and would like to be able to attach a webcam to my work provided laptop, since the built-in webcam is always positioned slightly off to the right due to the arrangement of the screens on my desk. Are there any webcams that don't require additonal software, which out it-department will not install? Cheers, Ron
