  1. ISSUE RESOLVED! For anyone reading this in the future, a shop (friend of the owner of the PC) finally took it, and immediately called it "annoying", because as you can see above, we've tried a lot. Ultimately, he swapped out SSDs, tried fresh installs on existing hardware (froze mid-install over and over on same old drive), etc, swapped out PSU, GPU, mobo, everything - it was the 5950X. I don't know how it ever worked, I don't know why it was on and off, but the CPU got swapped during all this testing, and was determined to be the culprit of all the pain.
  2. The issue completely disappeared after a Windows update, for over a month. Finally did Windows updates again (he was reluctant since it was fixed), issues came back, with a vengeance. Hard freezes constantly on mobo splash (BIOS still works), couldn't get into Windows 19/20 times. Took it to a shop, they tested everything, new install on SSD, new SSD, etc, even new SSD froze installing Windows, greatly implying mobo (RAM was tested / replaced as well). Going to replace the motherboard and hope for the best.
  3. Alright, pretty big update here, lots of lovely action this morning. We ran Memtest last night, for about 8 hours. It did 2 full passes, and 91% on a 3rd pass, no errors. He stopped Memtest, returned the PC to Windows and played a very non-demanding game for about an hour before leaving to the gym (closed the game, PC wasn't doing anything fancy while he was gone). He came back from the gym a bit later (1-2 hours), and the PC was BSOD (yay?!). After that BSOD, it froze again 1 minute after reboot, rebooted again, no issues since (about an hour now). Here's the data from this last round of events, DPC WATCHDOG VIOLATION returns (likely the cause the entire time?) ♪♫ We've used HWInfo numerous times, there are definitely no thermal issues happening, PC is sufficiently cooled and temps are great, stress tests aren't causing temp issues either. The randomness of the crashes was really having me think RAM or PSU, but a DCP WATCHDOG VIOLATION rules that out more or less, right? Hopefully someone can make something of the above.
  4. I've used it before when switching from a temporary R9 390 for my current build (came from a laptop, had no GPU for awhile) - not hard at all, just slightly time consuming. I'll add that to the list of things we can try. Confirmed, he has run chkdsk/sfc/dism, all passed fine. Despite using some Origin software that hit the CPU and RAM for 30 minutes, we'll give Memtest86 a test overnight / soon, as he does have 64GB, and in theory, I imagine hitting a bad sector within 64GB can take some time / randomness, especially when you're only using 16-20GB in most cases (the RAM is there for video editing, but that's a rarity).
  5. I just checked the monitor model / BenQ website, and there's nothing they offer (plug and play monitors according to them, no need) - I was hoping this too. I should get a comprehensive list of software and see if anything stands out, will do. We've run SFC and I believe chkdsk as well, definitely did Samsung Magician software specific checks and that reported no errors. I considered DDU, but given that we did a completely fresh install, and then updated the drivers on a fresh install using Geforce Experience, is there actually any way DDU can help?
  6. No overclocks going on, XMP was actually off, just had him turn it on to 3200Mhz (thought we had already done this after BIOS update). Worth noting, this apparently hasn't been on during the issues, and I'm not sure if it was on by default when Origin sent it. I do know it had a V30 BIOS, from 2 years prior, so who knows. What's the angle on disabling PBO? It was set to Auto, it's now turned off. The external WD drives (14TB and 12TB) were suspected of the WATCHDOG VIOLATION BSOD error, as no other devices seemed to be the culprit, but that was mostly deductive reasoning, nothing concrete. Both drives have been removed from the equation for awhile now, so they aren't the issue. The only remaining peripherals that haven't been removed for testing, is a C920 webcam, and a blue yeti mic - both models of which are very common, and I'm using both, also on an AMD system (5900x). We'll rotate those out just to be safe, but still seeking help as waiting 4-6 days just to test those is timely.
  7. Thought that was contained in the DxDiag, my bad, updated.
  8. I've been helping a buddy fix his PC issues for about 2 weeks now, and despite all of my tech knowledge and additional troubleshooting, we cannot seem to crack the case. BACKGROUND The PC is relatively new, bought new from Origin PC. It worked great for some time, and only recently started freezing. We did a fresh OS install after various very consistent issues (BSOD constantly, fixes not working, etc), hoping that would resolve the issues - no luck. We were getting DPC WATCHDOG VIOLATION errors on our BSOD, so we very much thought it to be an external drive, but those have been removed and freezing persists (though not sure if it's the watchdog violation due to no BSOD). We've replaced a dated mouse and headset, removed those drives from the equation, still no luck. Bold = changed after this post was made Fresh OS install (Windows 10, from the Origin flash drive) BIOS updated to latest version, from a nearly 2 year old version. All drivers completely up to date SSDs have been checked using Samsung Magician software Origin software provided for troubleshooting, testing CPU, GPU, RAM, etc - all passed with no errors SFC Disabling unused audio output devices Checked Windows Event Viewer various times (nothing critical or seemingly related until AFTER the freeze) Checked Windows task scheduler for leads pertaining to the time range of freezes (see below) Disabled Wifi adaptor (wired ethernet, so unused - modem / router is Comcast latest default, same as mine) And More™! Despite the above, we're still encountering a HARD freeze (no BSOD even after minutes) every 2-3 days on average. Oddly enough, the freezes are happening between 4-9AM, roughly, but nothing concrete. I thought it might be X hours after no use, but that isn't lining up either. User does not have PC sleep EVER, displays don't even turn off, so no sleep / hibernation related issues, at least on an OS level (could a device be nodding out after 8~ hours of no use?). SPECS Case: Corsair 5000X Processors: AMD Ryzen 9 5950X 16-Core 3.4GHz (4.9GHz Max Boost) Motherboard: Gigabyte X570 AORUS Elite WiFi Memory: 64GB CORSAIR VENGEANCE RGB PRO 3200MHz (2x32GB) System Cooling: CORSAIR H100i PRO XT RGB System Fans: ORIGIN PC Maximum Fan Kit Graphics Cards: NVIDIA 8GB GeForce RTX 3070 Operating System: MS Windows 10 Home Operating System Drive: 1TB Samsung 970 EVO Plus NVMe M.2 RAID : No RAID Hard Drive: 500GB Samsung 860 EVO Series Power Supply: CORSAIR RM850 SERIES PLUS GOLD PSU Power Supply WHAT NOW? So the PC hard froze at 5AM, as well as 8AM today, after 2.5 days of no freezing (this seems to the cycle after all the above updates), heavy use (gaming, work, on 24/7). I strongly feel this 5-8AM range is some sort of lead, but I don't want to get hung up on it. The WATCHDOG VIOLATION error isn't showing up anymore since there's no BSOD, so I'm not sure if that has been corrected, or persisting in a different state. Any leads great appreciated, and with any luck, we'll fix this up and I'll learn something new! UPDATES The PC crashed at 5AM, and 8AM today - the second crash while in use, in the middle of typing. This rules out periods of inactivity being an issue. See final post, ISSUE ERESOLVED! DxDiag-Tass-0523.txt
  9. I was 100% caught up on "it powers via USB", so I immediately kept going back to the PC, but you're 100% correct, and that must be the way to go. Find a Stream Deck compatible smart device (so I don't need to write code myself, that I honestly probably am not skilled enough to write in this particular case), preferably with USB port like you said, and just target that via Stream Deck, Simple, elegant enough, and honestly probably the best route considering the seemingly endless roadblocks when going through the PC. Thanks!
  10. I got a sweet new King Boo LED neon sign for my battlestation area (love it!), and was trying to get fancy with my Stream Deck, a windows powershell script, and an edible - you know how it is. After reading about Devcon, using USBDeview to locate specific devices and IDs, etc, I've basically hit a roadblock in that it appears USB power delivery is a part of the spec that us mere mortals do not have control over. Since the sign itself doesn't have a USB controller, I attempted to use a USB hub as a middleman I could target via script (I can), however disabling that device doesn't actually disable power delivery, so dead-end again. Wonder if anyone has done something like this. Are there specific USB hubs, cables, etc, that CAN somehow have power delivery turned off if they are disabled? I keep reading "99% of the time, spec, blah blah", which insinuates a device exists. Super unimportant, as I can just flip a switch, but if I could figure this out, I'd be pretty happy with myself! Dig deep! Don't let the complexity of the issue kill this project, it has to be possible, any leads appreciated!
  11. I recently made a trip to Ikea in Montreal (closest location to VT), and got myself 2x Alex Drawers and a Karlby countertop (72'') - love it. I currently own 2x Dell S2721DGF monitors, and plan to keep them for quite some time. These monitors have 4 USB ports on them, 2 near the display port / HMDI, 2 more on the lower left. I don't need to use all of them, but I do use some, and cable management on the mount would be nice, even if basic. There is potential for a 3rd monitor (another Dell, or perhaps a higher-spec primary down the road), but not now, I just want to leave room for it. Sound Bar will be placed under / right in front of the monitors, centered (sound bar is on the way) I currently have about 1'' of space between the desk and the wall - willing to expand this if needed, but I want the monitors to be pretty close to wall, definitely no more than 8'' out. Mounts style is clamp to desk preferred, as I don't have studs and wall mounting isn't desired in this case. Ideal if monitors can rotate at least 90°, as bullet hells are beautiful on those monitors when vertical (mmmMMMmm, Ikaruga). I probably want a mic arm too at some point, so if that needs to be considered in this space, jus stating so now. I'm not sure if I should go single mount, dual mount, or what. I've read very mixed reviews about the Karbly supporting weight in the middle, due to sag, it not being solid would (small portion is solid, then veneer), etc. I've also seen many people do just fine here, I'm just cautious. I'm also not sure if I should mount closer to the drawers, and have the monitors meet in the middle (taking stress off the counter), or if they'd be fine in the middle. 2 single mounts gives a bit more control, and less weight centered on a specific spot. Current setup: Any recommendations on specific options with this Karlby counter top, any cable management tips with this desk setup (just something that hangs down the back would be great, not looking to cut / drill), and general single vs dual, brand, etc, would be greatly appreciated. Almost done this setup, can't wait to mount!
  12. Recently redid my entire setup, love how it came out. Decided to leave my very old Cyber Acoustic speakers behind (headphones / camping bluetooth speaker for now!), and need an acceptable replacement / upgrade! Here's what the new space looks like: I'm currently eyeing the Creative Sound Blaster Katana V2, as well as the Audio Engine A2+ as possible solutions. I really like the low-profile aspects of the Katana V2, from small form factor, to less wires (and utilizing my currently empty USB C port on the back of the new PC). I do care about audio quality, but I am not an audiophile in any way - too many GWAR concerts, it'll be lost on me. I play synth casually, I have a good ear for notes / melodies, I can tell shit speakers from nice, but I'm not an audiophile - still not, even now. I own a pair of Sony WH1000XM3, and think they sound pretty damn good. Even the $50 pair of Cyber Acoustic speakers sounded pretty solid to me (filled my tiny room, didn't sound super tinny or muffled), but I want an upgrade either way. Jeff Grubb loves his Katana V2, as do many other reviews out there. Coming from $50 Cyber Acoustics speakers, I'm thinking whatever I get will blow my mind (how do the Sony WH1000XM3 stand up to these from pure audio quality standpoint?). If you haven't guessed, I'm leaning towards them, because I want to mount those monitors, and put the speaker right under - form factor seems awesome. That said, whatever I get, I'll be using for many years to come (5+ years, at least), and I'd really like to be impressed - be it with casual movie watching (TV speakers / my Cyber Acoustics are what I've been using for years), PC gaming, or filling my VERY small apartment with some high-quality clear audio. If you do chime in, please state if you own either, and why you believe what you share. Thanks so much for your time! Please consider: Price - $350 MAX Form Factor - Size on my desk / less wires is better Audio Quality - I'm paying $200-$350 for audio equipment, at the end of the day I want it to sound good. Audio quality loss for lower form factor / other features is acceptable within reason. Features - The Katana V2 has some very neat surround sound / gaming features, that while not a primary reason to buy, are very interesting to me and I could enjoy them a lot
  13. At long last, I've finally made it to an Ikea (had to drive to Montreal, closest Ikea to VT was 4+ hours to CT / NJ / ME) to get Alex Drawers and a Karlby, replacing my L-shaped tempered glass desk. Aside from liking how it looks significantly more, I've also got the storage I so desperately needed, and the ability to mount things now (the tempered glass was too thin and not an ideal surface). That said, the PC is done, and the desk is done, I just need to decide if I'm mounting these monitors, if I want a mic arm for the microphone, and what audio solution I'm going to go with (I didn't bother to hook up my 9 year old speakers, as I knew I wanted to replace them and didn't want to cable manage). NEEDS Audio - Highly considering the Creative Sound Blaster Katana V2 Low profile, great audio (especially compared to the 9 year old $50 Cyber Acoustics speakers), minimal wires, good reviews Monitor Mount(s) - I've been reading about single vs triple, and I'm pretty torn on where to go. People seem to really like single mounts for more flexibility and control, or double / triple to keep all monitors together perfectly. I'm currently using 2 Dell S2721DGF 27'' monitors, and while I'll probably stick with 2 for now, I think 3 monitors is in my future. Not sure if I should dual mount these, or just find a nice single mount and get 2, and a 3rd later if needed. Trying to strike a balance between looks and functionality, but if I do get the Katana V2, I need to mount the monitors to properly fit it on the desk. Mic Mount - I'm currently using a Blue Yeti, and it's placed just off to my left. I plan to stream, so I'm wondering if a mic arm would be ideal for better audio. I've seen a few videos by EposVox, and have been eyeing the Elgato Wave Arm, but I have no idea if I'd benefit from the lower profile model, or just the usual. LP could work if the monitors are mounted, but I think normal makes more sense for positioning it to my mouth. That said, if I have triple 27'', I might have to go under vs over, I'm just not sure. Cable Management - I've done a pretty good job running everything behind the Karlby itself. I mounted the powerstrip to the wall under the desk at the top right, and you can barely see it when across the room. I'm actually very happy with how it's come out, but I'm currently relying on wrapping a lot of loose wire around the monitor stands (behind the monitor, where it adjusts to go higher) - I'm not sure that'll fly once I mount the monitors. Any suggestions on how to better cable manage with this Alex Drawer / Karlby setup? Would prefer not to drill or anything, just some solution I can work in as is. I currently have a 1inch gap between the wall and desk, could be more if needed. All in all, I'm damn near done, just really struggling to visualize the final form. I've never mounted my monitors or used a mic arm, or even sat at a setup with such things, so I'm having a hard time imagining how things will be, and thus what products I'd want to solve the job. Any input, suggestions, or plain thinking out loud much appreciated! Before After
  14. Yep, Vermont. 100 down 5 up, 200 down 5-10 up (so unclear), 400 down 10 up. Hopefully they do, as work from home Zoom calls have proved to destroy Twitch streaming entirely, so I have to now schedule around quite random video chats at the moment. Probably calling today to change that TBH, as it needs to happen.
  15. I'm currently on 100 down, 5 up, which is actually completely sufficient (I see closer to 120~). I'm likely about to up to 400 down, 10 up, simply to double the upload (infuriating) for game streaming, since 5 (I get about 5.5~) is teetering on too little, and is too little if anyone in the house is uploading (the occasional Discord call or video chat in this house). Priority settings sound ideal, as that appears to be what strains the Quest 2, so I'll keep an eye out for that.
