I am new to this for first time with Linus Tech Tips which are my favorite on YouTube!
So now point to my topic about setting up server in home to get thing up and running in processing so here’s what I need to make sure upgrade CPU, RAM, and Hard drives give enough room to keep it running. I have my own homemade rack mount, CAT5e wires running everywhere, custom router, Cisco equipment of networks, and everything in closet.
Heres my current rackmount starting from top to bottom:
Top
- 24 ports CAT5e patch
- Cisco SG300-28PP Switch
- Vyatta 2600 (Lanner FW 8760 running untangle)
- Desktop monitor and, Keyboard and mouse
Middle
- Dell Poweredge R610 running Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard
Bottom
- 2 Power stripes
- CAT 5e intake
- Arris CM8200
Other switch is in garage its SG300-10MPP
There are two access point, one each in house and in garage, it’s Aironet 3502i dual band wireless N access point. I am looking forward to upgrade Wireless AC.
I am not sure if I can choice to stay with Cisco or Ubnt. I only look for more stable, fast enough, roaming around, easy management, and of course, POE support.
Two of access point I’m looking into are: Cisco WAP571 or Ubnt Unifi AC. I will be happy to hear from everyone a review those access point which are best and cheap I can find.
Feel free to ask me opinion to make a change a better setup than current.
So now for my Vyatta what I have, I upgraded in the following specification:
CPU - Intel Xeon Quad X3450 4C/8H 2.66 GHz
RAM: 16GB 4x 4GB DDR3-10600E UDIMM ECC unbuffers
Storage: 1x 128GB SSD MLC (opinion for additional one more SATA, as RAID or ACHI)
NIC: 8x Intel NIC
OS: Untangle Firewall
it running 300/30 providing by Cox but also included Verizon FiOS sitting as not active due switched to Cox to keep lower on bills. Also can upgrade to 1G/35 from Cox or 1G/1G from Verizon FiOS. Cox sucks (no rude but FiOS way better in my opinion due my parents switched it oh well.)
My thought is Vyatta 2600 might retire anytime soon so I can get Dell R210 II to run pfsense or untangle I have not yet decision to choice. Reason why upgrade to R210 II cause they have AES supported and X3450 don’t dye old hardware.
Now the fun part is storage server so they will be running as Plex Media Server, File Server, and possibly additional VPN, Ubnt, security camera, other server software in future. This storage server will be stay on 24/7 using low usage of power so here’s specification of Dell Poweredge R610.

Storage: RAID 0 6x 300GB SAS 15K
I am looking into upgrade hard drive so I’ve been looking into 6x 1TB or 6x 2TB but I’m not sure which best RAID I can use to storage all movies, personal files, pictures, backup, and many things on it. Also upgrade CPU to X5670 to handle plex media server to runs more than 4 maybe 6 at same time. Any idea would really appreciate it.
Ive playing around with HP proliant DL360 G6 I got for $50, it got 1 cpu, X5560 and 4GB RAM and also one 500GB SATA. I will take some time to upgrade to dual X5670 and 64 or 72GB RAM and I am not sure if I can get 4x 1TB or 8x 500GB or 1TB depend on RAID system maximum of capacity. Also best RAID for those hard drive.
For custom router, it will be always SSD at best performance and not much going on upgrade.
For storage Server on R610 and DL360 G6, I only looking for 7,200 rpm or above hard drive at best but SSD are overkill in my opinion, HDD are longer lifespan than SSD at those day. For RAID setup, I want redundancy and performance at best instead RAID 0 cause it is risk for data loss. That’s why I need your option to find which suit my need.
