Since all the debate about article 13 in the eu is making vpn services important for eu citizens because of  the fear of geo blocking,

how about a video of "How to set up your own private VPN on a server you rent somewhere in the world"?
Perhaps that's something Anthony could help with! Could be fun and informative.

My biggest concern is geo blocking.
In order to not provide these new rules on their own sites, it could be possible that many websites instead just geo block EU-citizens. Well, we could avoid this with a vpn connection but that's just dumb.

I wish I'd live in canada or somewhere else where the government shares the best of europes systems like free health care.
Who knows, maybe Linus does need a programmer to make his own game where you get points if you drop expensive hardware?

I would contribute at least 5$. I love scrapyard wars.

Would be even better to let them go to another country and have a rule that forbids shipping at all. Would be hilarous to see them struggling to get parts by talking with natives who aren't fluent in english.

Retorak reacted to LAwLz in I just got my own linux server what should I use it for.
Here are some things I would recommend you look into. And instead of just saying "learn how the file structure is laid out", which isn't helpful advice at all because it doesn't tell you how to learn it, I'm going to recommend some things to install and configure which will naturally require some exploring.

    1) Follow this guide called "How to set up a secure Raspberry Pi web server, mail server and Owncloud installation". It is a bit outdated so you will run into some issues that you will need to solve. It's also a good idea to look into what each thing is. Ignore the part about it being for Raspberry Pi, it should work for any computer running GNU/Linux.

    2) Setup a Pi-hole server. This is really straight forward, UNLESS you also did step 1. If you did then you will run into lots of issues because you will end up with two web servers on the same computer, listening to the same port. The workaround for this is to create another (logical) software interface on your computer with its own IP, and then bind each web server to a specific interface. This will require some googling and troubleshooting on your end.

    3) Setup a syslog server on it and check out how that works. Maybe redirect some messages from Windows?

    4) Configure it as an OpenVPN server. This will most likely require port forwarding from your router too, but that's a good opportunity to learn how that works too if you don't already know.

Retorak got a reaction from Dedayog in steam problems
I did that with my ssd a few months ago.

At first I let steam make a folder on my ssd. I was lazy and just let it install a very tiny game. Then I copied the game I wanted on the ssd from the hdd to the steam folder (steamapps). Then you deinstall the game in steam and reinstall it on the ssd. Since the data is already there steam just checks the data very quickly and won't download anything. And you're done.

edit: Steam will make a steam folder itself on the new drive which contains more than just the steamapps folder. Just copying the steamapps folder won't do.

Retorak got a reaction from Gareque in In need for a game my dad would play
Thanks again. I finally met with my dad, let him play a bit and got him back to gaming!

Currently he is playing Wolfenstein 2 with Prey and CS:GO waiting for him to finish his singleplayer onslaught.
Sadly he wasn't a fan of contract wars but he liked CS:GO. And he wants to get his hands onto DOOM Eternal as soon as it comes out.

While we were playing a bit and chatting, he mentioned how much he hates the microtransactions in quake champions or other games he tried he didn't even mentioned to me before hand.
Just as Gareque was implying, he didn't feel like the changes of the gaming market would fit his expectations on how games should look like or what kind of service they should provide. I think it's hard to let go of something, even a standard, if you were so used to it.

I hope his reflexes and hand-eye coordination will get better soon and we can have some fun together in Doom Eternals multiplayer.

Retorak reacted to Gareque in In need for a game my dad would play
Doom Eternal is out soon isn't it?

Otherwise, the oldschool 'genre' of FPS games seem to be making a come back, from Wolfenstein and Doom, right up to retro-style games from indie developers.

Realistically though, it's entirely on your dad to find it interesting.  If he doesn't, it may be time to move on and find a different hobby and even selling, should be able to get at least 1k for the machine if not more.

The gaming industry has changed a huge amount in the time I've been realistically playing.  Sure, I played when I was around 3, but I've probably been a serious gamer for the last 25 years or so.  In that time I've seen games priced extortionately, but complete packages in console games, to PC games shipped as complete packages with heft chunks added later as expansions at a much lower rate.

Then they moved digitally and DLC became the new expansions and slowly but surely, the base game has been pulled apart to make more 'room' for DLC to be sold off extra.  And that's not even including the things like loot boxes.

With this in mind, it's easy to see how someone who's gamed for likely the amount of time your dad has, can become somewhat disheartened or disillusioned with what the industry has become.  It's no longer the whole 'nerds in their basement making a thing out of love'.  In most cases it's become a soulless machine to pump out the same game with a new number at the end.

Anyway that went off the rail, so in answer to your question, some game suggestions below if your dad is willing to try non-FPS I've included others too:
    --------------------------------------
    FPS:
    Doom Eternal when it's out
    Wolfenstien/New Order/II
    Prey
Bioshock (not really taxing on his PC, but a great series of games all the same)
Metro (the new game has just been released too)
Deus Ex - Human Revolution and Mankind Divided

Other wise, maybe something like an RPG with an engrossing story to get involved in?  In which case, obviously, I have to say this: The Witcher 3.  Also:
    GTA 5
    Skyrim
    Fallout 3, NV & 4
