Gareque got a reaction from TheMountain28 in Is it True some ransomware or any virus was very difficult to resolve? Any experience?
Most ransomware is practically impossible to get off the system, because it literally encrypts your files.  As the files are encrypted, you can't just delete it to remove it, you have to unencrypt the files.

In pretty much all cases, it's easier to just format and restart than even bother trying to fix it.

As for viruses, it depends on the virus.  I've had self-replicating viruses in the past that if you deleted the files it ran through, a separate part would reinstall it under a different name, turning it into a rabbit hunt.  There were also potentially dangerous viruses in the past which could cause hardware damage.

I was tempted by the one on Scan, but saw the above.  Bought it and had no problems at all.

Today, well lately now that AMD actually has CPU's that actually matter things have calmed down.

It's about time AMD made some mainstream CPU's that are actually worth buying, it only took them forever to finally come up with some.

I kinda believe if they were going to, they would have a long time ago.  As it stands on the grand scale, both have their own market, I just think Ryzen is bridging the gap.

You never want one or the other to be massively ahead though, as happened with Intel a while back, because it stifles progression.
Apples Dongles sounds like some kind of euphemism lol.

I think I get where you're coming from.  But realistically, imo at least, loyalty should come from 2 very similar performing and similar priced items.  Then you choose the one you prefer because of it.

The problem is when you have people spending £150-200 more on a processor that doesn't do much better 'because'.  I believe that's where the line becomes more in the stupid remit.

'If' you can afford it, you should at least be able to break even.  The problem is, you'd need to invest in the build first and sell it later on.  As long as you can prove it's not second hand, there's no reason you shouldn't be able to make the parts value back.

The issue in actively making money though, is most places can do builds now (at least here) for £100 or much less.  And that's for a £1k+ PC.  For that reason, most people inclined to have a PC built for them will just get it done by where ever they buy the parts.

Gareque got a reaction from NineEyeRon in What do employer's mean when they talk about "desktop experience"?
No they don't.  As someone who currently works in the same role, they want to know your years of experience in desktop support, as mentioned by Nebari as well.

From what I read earlier in the post, this isn't an interview question, but more of an application type question, you can't just ask them to rephrase it as you fill it in and send it to them.  If you rang them up and had them clarify what they mean by years of experience in desktops, you are telling them already that the answer is zero.

Just to make it so this is 100% clear:

They want to know your experience in support of desktops in an IT role.  That's it.

This can include windows troubleshooting, networking, hardware or just about anything else related, depending on the tier you're looking at.

FX didn't make AMD more known, not in a good way anyway. It wasn't competitive in the slightest and board manufacturers responded to that by making inferior quality boards, excluding the top end 990FX boards. The poor board quality showed in how many FX8xxx chips caused heavy throttling or burning of boards.

I think AMD was best known through their performance leadership during the Athlon and Athlon 64 days (~'99-2006) and when they became the bang for the buck kings in the Phenom II era (2008-2011). The period 2011-2016 was basically rock bottom.

Now that AMD is competitive again, I jumped on the bandwagon in 2017 with the R7 1700, and upgraded to the 2700X when it came out. Lovely stuff.

We still have fanboys around, that will blindly support one brand over another, but nowadays the difference is more nuanced and thus the best choice will depend on your usage.
I can't even broadly say "you choose Intel for gaming, AMD for video editing" or something like that, because you might need a certain sort of technology; or in your price bracket one might be a better option over another.

I love the competition there is and I think I would fall more on the "AMD fan"-side of the spectrum; but I try to keep it as objective as possible.

Some people definitely do. In fact, most people are more likely to buy an Intel based system purely because they've heard of the brand more often and in more positive terms.

I personally don't care who makes the CPU, though all things being the same I'd rather buy from the underdog.

There is an enormous difference between causing offence and saying something that would otherwise be a crime or hate speak.

Someone can tell me whatever the hell they like, I don't get offended easily.  But, on the other hand, if they tell me that they are going to track down my IP and kill my son, that's not causing offence, that's a threat.  It's 'still' just words however, so are you saying that kind of thing should be acceptable?

And that's where my point comes in to it.  Being behind a keyboard should 'not' mean that you are free of consequence for your actions.  Look at the terrorist groups recruiting people through social media.  Should that be allowed unfettered?

Whilst all these things are opposed in civilised society, to allow them would be true freedom of speech.  Which would you prefer?  A world that allows threats against your loved ones in a variety of ways? Or one where such actions have legal ramifications? Because if someone stopped me in the middle of the street and threatened me, you'd be damn sure there are consequences, why should online be any different?

Same goes with racism and any other form of prejudism.

If you like Sci Fi FPS, Story-rich or RPG games, then it's probably one of the top series in the genre!

Plus, ya know, if you were to have a look on CD Keys right now, they have the delux version of Mankind Divided on sale for £5 as a world-wide region.

Perhaps you're right, but to be completely honest, I can't see how that would come about of its own accord.

I do not say this as a thing against kids, but let's be honest here, even when we were young we did stupid things, including to see how far we could push the boundaries and that was not always done in ways that wouldn't have ramifications.  So there's that for one.

Second is that there is currently an infuriating belief in the world at the moment and this is in no way relative purely to the internet.  This is the belief that someone's opinion in a field they have no experience in can somehow, on some level, measure up to that of an expert in the same field and be held on the same level.  You see it in TV interviews as well.

The problem with the internet is it gives a whole range of people that would never have an opportunity to voice such things, the ability to do so.  This is why you have things like growing support for things like flat earth which currently don't seem dangerous, just stupid...  But as misinformation grows...

Problem is, like you say, how to handle the spread of misinformation is not an easy thing to tackle.

Honestly speaking, what I've played of Doom is so frantically fast paced that you don't really pay much attention to the violence lol.

But, if that's not your thing then fair enough.

Perhaps have a look at the newer Deus Ex games (Mankind Divided and Human Revolution), they are a blend of story-based RPG and FPS, in a Cyberpunk setting (if you've ever heard of the original Deus Ex, then you know the drill).

Also worth keeping an eye on will be:
Cyberpunk 2077 (from the makers of the Witcher series, so you know the story is going to be great)
Outer Worlds (Obsidian's new game, since they were cut out from doing more Fallout, they decided to make their own)

If you enjoy RPG's then possibly Pillars of Eternity 1 & 2.  2 is far superior, but it's a direct sequel, so parts of the game would be missed out if you skipped it.

The series is a spiritual successor to the old Baldurs Gate games and the story is great.
