Thankfully, LTT seems to be being very awesome so far. Rapidly updating info where possible (replacing youtube videos is sadly probably outside their control without destroying their channels entirely, thanks Google), Immediately switching to her preferred name and pronouns, then treating her like she's always been there, because she has.  They need not make a big statement, as this all shows just how supportive they really are, in their actions.  They, of course, have made a small statement, over on Emily's channel when she posted her coming out video, which is even more awesome, but all they have done so far shows true caring.  Makes me very happy to be supportive of LTT.

Are you a Tech Tuber I was unaware of, who has a following of 10+ million and is an authority on how a tech YT channel should be run?

    No?

Uhhh, are you otherwise some world-renown authority I should know, and you have a boatload of credentials to back up your objectively shit-tier takes?

    No?

Well, then, sit down, shut up, and stop trying to dictate things for people who aren't you.  Is it a bad deal for you?  It objectively might be.  Is it a bad deal for everyone else?  NOPE.  Plex Server is on my list to-buy next time I see it on a sale, and it was even before this video went live.

So...  Maybe you should stop trying to tell the world how it should work, and worry more about yourself.

It's really tempting to label the kind of person who could fall for something like this to be an idiot, but, like, are we forgetting that even experienced people can make mistakes and have lapses in judgement?

I mean, seriously. There's more than one way a vulnerability can exploit a user, and I remember this plausible anecdote from a YouTuber doing an ad spot for a password manager -- he received a login notification after a long day from an unknown location and was going to "log in" to the site, but realized it was a phishing site when said manager didn't suggest to fill in the login fields. Whether that story was real or not, it's something that literally could happen to anybody. And I don't think anybody here can honestly say that they've never made a mistake or had a lapse in judgement, no matter how experienced or disciplined you are. You don't become an expert by never making mistakes.

So can we please collectively stop equating "scam victim" with "idiot"?

I don't think we've put out an official statement yet (although we will at some point),  but I know it's been mentioned on WAN show that for the time being we aren't planning on hosting an LTX this year. A virtual LTX is also not likely to happen since we're working on some other streams/events/videos that will happen throughout the year!

It's just not possible to host an event in person due to the ongoing pandemic, but we're hopefully that we can be back for 2022. We'll just have to wait and see.

Yes, showcases are sponsored content. They call them showcases to distinguish them from reviews, for obvious reasons. They also won't provide review or opinion on a showcase, rather just show the product and often do something interesting with it to make it entertaining to watch.

This is really a one sided view.
The "mental" amount of funding paid/paying for the full build up of 5 studios and development of 2 games.
So it's not that mental if you put it into perspective.
Same for the delivery of the game/ development time.
500 employees seems a lot just like the 8 years development time...but if you put it into perspective again, GTA V took 7 years to PC with more than 1500 ppl working on it, and having all the infrastructure/team/funding from the beginning. RDR2 took 8 years again having everything from the beginning and around 2000 ppl worked on it altogether.
Meanwhile CIG had to build up everything from zero and they are working on 2 games one of which is a big MMO. And they didn't have 500 devs from the beginning.

So asking a startup to push out a singleplayer and an MMO while building up the whole company on the fly and have fraction of the team (on average over the dev time) in the same timeframe some big established studios spend on single player games is not really fair.

Basically Short story is the crowd funding happened in 2012... from then they were a team of like 12 i think or something. They had to build up the company(its at 500+ now people), Heavily modify cryengine to work with the game they wanted(64 bit conversion, procedural tech, etc), and yes feature creep tho that has stopped(mostly). The first few years were mostly spent building the company/engine/tools to actually build the game, stuff you normally do not see companies do in the public light. Now its at a point where (hopefully) the single player game will launch next year(they plan a marketing campaign with some new investor money later this year). The online portion is being built and is likely a few years before it reaches the full 100+ star systems promised.  They made missteps with outside contractors early on which didnt work out and forced a lot of reworks so they brought all development in house and ofc CR let his imagination run away but overall no its not a scam. If it was, they are the worst scammers in history(what scammer actually spends most of the money on the product they are scamming you with).

As for the prices, Its the same price to get a PU game package as most games, $45-60 which lets you download and test the PU in its current state, . They do sell ships for alot more but thats to fund the development of the game and not required as everything can be earned in the PU when it stops getting reset after server meshing development is finished.

In the end we will get the single player game next year likely and some form of the online game that was promised in the months/years to follow as that will be updated quarterly

It really depends on your expectations. As stated above you can get in Star Citizen with a package that costs $45 USD. You can spend $60 USD and get Star Citizen and access to SQ42 (single-player campaign) when it releases. Star Citizen is a true Alpha not an Alpha in the sense of Steam Early Access games. There are/will be many weird and, at times, game-breaking bugs. These come and go with each Quarterly patch. Each patch resets everything from the previous patch as there is no true persistence at this time.

I would suggest you watch some Twitch Streamers and wait for a freefly event to try the game without pledging anything. If you have not done so, go to the robertsspaceindustries.com website and sign up for a free account, then you will get an email when there is a freefly coming up. If you have seen the problems and issues that playing in an Alpha can bring and don't mind having things change and break at times then I highly recommend it.

I have been playing since 2016 and I knew what I was getting into with the Alpha process.

Setting things up as a corporation with investors is no guarantee of solid promises. Look at the dot coms from the 90s. Look at the WeWork situation. Look at the ongoing undercurrent of real estate "investment" schemes. If RSI/CIG was defying the laws of financial gravity, it'd be a different situation; it'd show that they were hiding their true financial nature, then they'd go bust in a wave of scandals and that's when everybody'd find out how much the top brass had profited while maintaining little more than a shell company. That kind of methodology is much easier to do with venture capital and traditional investment methods; crowdfunded backers are a quicker, dirtier business that usually involve something that looks too good to be true. Whereas with Star Citizen, it's been a rocky ride for certain, with moments where it loked like the whole thing might come to a complete end.

But it hasn't, and it's only gotten better and better as time goes on. Sometimes, it's not about the finished product; it's about being part of the development process as it goes along, something a lot of other video game companies can seriously learn from.

That would be because Star Citizen will never be complete, just like any other MMO. The game WILL RELEASE to the public as a release to market (RTM) game at some point. However, that release does not and can not mean that Star Citizen is "finished" as there will be additions and improvements made indefinitely. Anyone, at this stage, that thinks Star Citizen is some kind of scam is either being disingenuous, willfully ignorant, or gullible enough to believe the detractors.

Let's put it this way. There exist only three games that I feel I have gotten my money's worth from. Games that I have played past whatever single-player they may or may not have had and then moved on to play the multiplayer on a daily basis for years on end. However incomplete it may be, SC is one of those games.

Also, as Spoon pointed out above, I have gained real actual friends in this community. Not the "hey how about a raid on Saturday" online kind of friends, but the "Hey, I'd like to invite you to my wedding" kind.

    So there's that.

No it's not a scam, the active community wanted it extended and this is the result, yes its frustrating having to wait but I played Kingdom Come and TBH the 4yrs wasn't long enough, I'm happy to wait for a game if its well done.

$65 for 2 games does seem expensive but they changed this in 2015 iirc, I originally paid £27 for the complete package at the time the dog fighting module came out.

Paying bug testers? Not really, that's the evocati, of which some have ended up working for CIG.

Cult? Aren't you part of the PCMR?

Sunk cost/time falicy? Not really, I increased my pledge after I felt I hadn't paid the devs enough for the time spent in arena commander, the reason I've spent that much time? The people on here are awesome, we've branched out in other games and fingers crossed I'm off to different parts of the world at some point to meet a few of them. Best $100 spent for that reason alone.

But this is what I usually expect from people that haven't done the research and only read the title of every article of SC, that and a dude that is trying to justify a purchase of a Ferrari and a night at a brothel. It's why the SC LTT community moved away from the forums.

People have hobbies, some spend it on "pixels". Others on comics, toys, paintings, sculptures, cars, houses, plants, cats, dogs, electronics.

Your stupid list doesn't make any sense. Yes you could do any of that, or you can buy anything else.... its your money, no one is forcing you to spend it on any one thing. Who buys a pile of useless rust for 15k? you can do any of those others things in your list for it... yeah i can see where the dilemma is coming from! Cheers Mate!

so how that works? You call a bunch of ships from the game of someone's dreams "just pixels", i call your Ferrari a useless pile of rust.... Different priorities and wants for different people. Stop complaining about a company giving people options and just do what you want with your money and let others decide what they do with their money. Trust me, your life will truly change for the better when you do this.

This is not faint praise it is an accurate representation of the current state of the game.

Your opinions on what other people want to spend their money on is of no consequence. As far as the reasoning, it would take a completely moronic company to not give their backers what they want when those backers determine your funding on their whim.

As far as the amounts funded it just goes to show you have little, if any idea what is going on with the game but continue to spout opinion and rhetoric in response to my facts. A unique situation for someone professing "Not naysaying the game, I could not care less about it, not into star sims".

Because regular publishers continually release crap, reworked content that is so broken it can only be made better with such skins/DLCs. There is no comparison here since CIG is both developer and publisher and have yet to release the game. You are trying to compare released games and supposedly finished products to a game in alpha still being developed and supported by pledges. It is a disconnect that does not work.

The missed dates are explained fully by the changes made because of what the people paying for the game development wanted. You can not fault a company for changing things when their funding source wants those changes. Especially when those changes require ground up innovation and adaptation.

It does not eat resources that bad currently, the implementation of Object Container Streaming client side has really helped. I average 52FPS on a 3440x1440 with an 1800x and Vega 64 at ultra high settings. When I said few I meant few. Unless you have an absolute potato PC there is no reason the game should be unplayable if you don't mind bugs. Gameplay currently consists of cargo running and various missions covering everything from packages delivery to bounty hunting. Yes there are bugs as stated but that's to be expected. I have played over 4 hours (several hundred since 2016) today with just one server side issue.

As far as two games issue it was originally started as Squadron 42/Single player and that would have been out if 2014 or so if the community had not voted to build the MMO of Star Citizen. These changes were asked for and more money was pledged to get these stretch goals in game. They are not constantly changing their minds they have to change thing to make the game work the way it is supposed to work. These early changes and the other things that had to be done are the reason we don't have a release yet, and that is a good thing. Why have one good game when you can have two great games?

The $250 million was not earned in 2012, it was never earned. The funding currently stands at a little over $218 million and that was reached this past week. The whole $27,000 package thing was not a money grab as people would like to believe, that package was asked for by those that have already backed the game to that level and wanted a way to consolidate their fleets. Again, there is no money required aside form the initial pledge price of $45/$65 depending on whether one wants one or both games.

Typical naysayer nitpicking? I plainly wrote it is $45 to play the Alpha but that will also give you full access after release when the entry price will be $60+ just for Star Citizen. The $65 you attempt to misrepresent is the cost of TWO games, Star Citizen and Squadron 42.
