  1. That makes a lot of sense, thank you so much! Also it would be a table top in person game so logistically it would be 1 game max at a time.
  2. Budget (including currency): initial planning stages- wife hasn't approved anything yet. But loves the idea. Country: United States Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Dungeons and dragons, web browsing Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): I want to build out my physical table to play dungeons and dragons. So horsepower on the computer end is not going to be super crazy. Essentially what the plan is as dungeon master I would like a computer with a screen (i have several laptops as options) on my end which will connect to a TV that will serve as the game board. So the TV will show different landscapes etc. My vision would be to have small monitors at each of the players chairs too. So essentially when something becomes relevant in game, they get unique information, recall info, etc they get it pushed to that monitor. I've seen a few small monitors that I think may work (here's an example: 7 Inch Small Monitor, Raspberry Pi Monitor Built-in Speakers, Mini Monitor 1024 x 600, HDMI Monitor 60 Hz, 5ms, IPS Screen Display w/Remote Control, HDMI VGA AV BNC Input, Computer Monitor,PC Monitor https://a.co/d/grc5LGI this one has sound which is only a plus for noises). The technical part comes in here. So I would essentially need to connect to the TV and 5 other screens, with the ability to push specific images/ word docs, etc to specific screens for players. Would windows be able to support essentially displaying to a total of 7 displays at once (mine, TV, and player screens) or would something like Linux be better? Is there any program or logistic set up that would make pushing info to each respective screen easier? Essentially an interface where i can select x picture go to say monitor 2 or so on. And would a laptop with a dock be capable of running all of the above or would I be better off getting like an old pc/ graphics card and connecting everything that way. For reference I also have the TV (free 55 Inch 4k off fb marketplace), and the project is very much in the planning stages thus far). We also acquired a Dell k16a thunderbolt docking station a little ways back originally for my wifes work, but it didnt work with her work laptop. Right now we don't have a USB c laptop to test if it works, the USB c connector is kinda flimsy but in theory it should would. I also have two extra older hp square monitors I could potentially bring into the mix on the DM side. I appreciate the input!
  3. So I recently started mining on my gaming rig when I wasn't using it, just as a side thing. I am set to make a whopping like $30 a month, so big money here, I may retire tomorrow. As a random thought I wondered if there was a way to set up say like my series x or xbox one to mine, I mean something cause they don't get used a lot either and they have some type of horse power behind them. In googling that kind of concept for a few minutes I found this guy's video using this site Ai Miner Pro: https://youtu.be/2jz_nF3_INk Which seems pretty good, but almost too good to be true. First of all I haven't given them any money because especially on the internet if it seems to good to be true it probably is. it sounds like this app just runs in like the browser and it is using Ai learning to trade crypto and that's how the profits come in (I could be wrong obviously). That video linked to their website, that admittedly does look somewhat legit. https://getaiminer.com/ They also have a brief about video, which does look kinda professionally done. Basically it was saying to get started you can use like any phone or device really based on this one youtuber using an xbox and a couple other devices, here are some more videos I found from the same channel. https://youtu.be/37l7RW182sQ https://youtu.be/P79wXsDanBU On their website though it says you need to have an initial deposit of $250 into a trading service they support, and you need to chat with they "success manager" on what's app in order to actually get started. Obviously that whole sentence is a series of red flags, but I was curious to see if anyone had heard of this if it is a scam, or if, by some twist of fate, it is a real app you can use. It seems to only have been around for about a month or two and in trying to dig more they aren't mentioned anywhere else from what I can tell. No negative reports calling it a scam (which it sounds like). No one on reddit, twitter, facebook or anything as far as I can tell. Just curious to see if anyone had any experience with this, or had heard anything about it.
  4. Hey everyone, so I had this crazy idea while I was using my computer for folding at home and making my rig a space heater. A couple days ago I made one of those metal models and it looked super cool, so I put it on top of my pc for the aesthetic.(I added the pic here) It just so happens that that part of my case also gets pretty warm because that's right near my AIO on the inside. Then an idea dawned on me, because that's an all metal component on top of my case. Hypothetically speaking because that area of the case gets pretty hot when the rig is working, would having an extra piece of metal there kinda like a passive cooler there actually help cool the computer? I mean this one would be terrible I imagine because its got thin connecting bits and stuff like that. But hypothetically if you like sanded down the case, added thermal paste, then had a custom piece there that was a bit more substantial, could you in theory make a functional cooling PC hood ornament?
  5. Hey everyone, First off this is a really minor issue and not causing any problems its just kinda been bugging me. I have no idea why, but the hard drive I use as a game drive always shows up as something I can eject like a flash drive. When it is inside my case connected through a sata port. So far I have not accidentally ejected it but the concern is one day I will and that is a can of worms I just don't want to deal with. The drive in question is a firecuda 2tb, as for my rig's specs I am using an aorus x570 mobo, ryzen 3600x, and a rtx 2060 super. Any help would be appreciated! Also upon writing this I can eject my other ssd that is a linux boot drive that I just installed, also wired through a sata cable. This is the first computer I have ever built, is this just a normal thing to be able to do? As a side note I can eject the game drive in both windows and linux.
  6. Thanks for the assist, that does sound like a plan, i think i'm going to use that smaller boot drive, and I have heard alot of good things with freeNas so I'll probably end up going with that one. And I'll pick up some ram for that bad boy cause it looks pretty cheap which I like a lot when getting parts.
  7. Hey Guys, Thanks for the input, I think I'm going to go that route , it may just be a little while till I implement it so I can save up and stuff but I will for sure keep this in mind.
  8. Hey Everyone, So I recently got a dell optiplex 9020 small form factor that was going to get thrown away, and I kind of want to convert it into a NAS. I wanted to not use it for anything too crazy, probably just photos, and maybe a couple movies. Right now it has a core i5vpro inside, dual channel 8gb RAM, 3 SATA ports (one was being used for a DVD drive), and an open PCIE slot. It has a 500gb hard drive as of now but I am probably gonna get a new drive at some point in the future. Would this be a good idea for this machine? Also where would you guys recommend to start?
  9. Hey Everyone, So I just got this really sweet older dell mechanical keyboard, the thing came with an older windows xp computer. But the thing is it is kinda dusty, and I wanted to find out how best to clean it. I haven't really had too many keyboard before so I am a noob to proper maintenance. I really like this one and want it to last. It isn't crazy dirty, mainly just some dust. It basically sat around for it's whole life, and got used MAYBE a handful of hours in that time, not even doing any type of normal typing which is really nice, mainly just a couple entries here and there. So any recommendations on a good cleaner? I just didn't want to get something that might, mess up the key text, or anything like that, just because it is in pristine condition. Thanks for the help!
  10. (Sorry not sure if this is the right forum area for this, i figured word is a program) So, this may have a simple fix, but me and my wife have been up a and trying for a long time to fix this. So my wife needs to submit this word document for a grant, that is super strict with every aspect of the format, and she has nailed all that down to a t, except for one part. With this she has super limited space, and for some reason at the end of one of her pages, word is just inserting a big white space, and making the next word in the sentence skip to the start of the next page. If you go to delete the space before hand, there is only one space, and it connects the words (likethis) sorry its late and that's how I would be describe it. So far we've tried just about everything under the sun and so far nothing has worked. To be honest I don't use mac OS at all, she just got the new laptop and that's where it is. Any help would be awesome.
  11. I am also going to give this a shot. So more fun fact than anything, there's no wifi card on it (to the best of my knowledge) and no connection so I'm gonna put produkey on a flash drive, then use that to try that out.
  12. I need to completely wipe the drive. So it was a lab computer so more than anything it's anything on it for personal, as well as any private data. So pretty much the whole thing. I haven't ever used DBAN before, can I use that if the hard drive is connected to my laptop through a USB? I have an external enclosure for it. Also as a side note would that method also work on an older hard drive from the xp era? I need to do the same thing there, but one program would make life easier. Also these computers were found in a back storage room unfortunately, they didn't even come with power cords. My game plan is to (for the windows 7 one) to wipe the drive, probably put like a cheap ssd in it, then reinstall windows 7 and sell it.
  13. There was a sticker on the side of it, I am gonna give it a shot, and thanks!
  14. Hey Everyone, So quick question, right now I need to completely wipe a windows 7 hard drive, but the computer itself is getting tossed. So what I want to do is wipe it but still have windows on it just because it does have a windows 7 license and it also hard the office suite on it (97-2003 but still free license). Cause it is apparently ok for me to take the computer considering it's just going in the trash. Is there a way to get the product key remotely? I have a drive enclosure for the 3.5 hdd to connect to my laptop, and I can access it that way. I tried using produkey but that wouldn't pull up any of the keys. The other dilemma is it does boot, but the windows log in has been lost to time, which is the original reason I needed the external drive enclosure to pull data off it originally. Even if there is a way to get the product key for windows 7, completely wipe the drive, then reinstall windows I'd be game for that, right now I am just struggling with the how to do it. Appreciate any help.
  15. thanks again for the assist, so the issue was i needed the program folder, and the database folder both on the C drive, then i needed the OG desktop shorcut on my desktop because that was the only way to launch the program.
  16. gotcha, how would I do that? Also it does tell me the specific file missing when the program can't run. So far I have tried copying the contents i want over to a flash drive then to my laptop. it seems i get most things (including the file that it says im missing) but it is saying that it is missing in my working directory. I am not quite sure what that is/ if I should be playing around in that.
  17. also i tried option 2 and some files couldn't be copied to my laptop, and the program did not execute as a heads up.
  18. With macrium reflect, I need to bring it to a windows xp computer with no internet, would it work if i put that on my drive, then bring that over to the xp computer and make the backup that way? Also thanks for the assist I really appreciate it.
  19. an example of one of the file names of a i believe PFD file is 14010661 if that is helpful at all.
  20. Hi Everyone, So this is a bit of a long shot here, but everyone here is amazing so I think there is a chance. Currently my lab is attempting to back up all data from our program for wingates which is Parvo true1 2400 which runs on windows XP. So as a heads up we have flash drives that the computer recognizes, and if need be floppy disks. We have over 1000 total tests here starting from 2006. So as of right now we can't find an efficient way to backup all the testing data. We did find the folder location in xp that actually saves the test to, but there is so much stuff in there we don't know what is what, because nothing is labelled in there as the test subject name, date of test, or any other correlation that we can make out off the top of our heads. In the file location there is a whole bunch of random file names and folders we don't properly understand (gonna try and upload in a second post because it wont let me insert any more here) so there are two main file types here from what we can tell that are FPD and PFD file types, which I have no idea what they are. Any help would be greatly apprecaited, I can provide any more details if needed. The subject files I am limited on posting due to the confidential nature, as a heads up.
  21. Gotcha thanks for the info! Right now I am still gonna use it but I will keep that in mind when the time does come.
  22. Hi Everyone, So quick question, my laptop screen just broke due to a drop in my backpack. The laptop I have is an HP Pavilion x360 - 15-bk127cl, with a core i5 7th gen intel processor. The thing still works fine, luckily I not too long ago swapped out my HDD for an SSD so my entire graduate career worth of documents was safe (on top of the backups I have). The issue now though is the screen is broken in the upper right corner. The touchscreen in that area is dead but everywhere else works just fine. That's not too big a deal because I turned that off in device manger any way, because I disliked it. I planned to have this laptop a little while longer, but I eventually do want to sell it. Again I don't want that now or anytime soon but I do kinda wanna ask if this type of repair would be worth it. So the replacement screen on ebay is $56, I also swapped the 1tb hdd for a 500 gb SSD, and I added an extra 8 GB of RAM for a total of 16 GB. All in all, without the screen replacement so far I put in about 112 bucks into it, but it was a gift so I didn't end up having to pay initially for it. So with the repair it would put me around $168, so my question is, when I eventually do go to sell it would it be worth it to have the screen fixed? Or would it not be worth it at all because by the time I go to sell it, the thing wouldn't be worth all that much? Any help would be appreciated. I attached a picture of the screen for reference. Thanks for the help everyone!
  23. Hey Everyone, So I got this air humidifier as a gift, which was really nice, but now it doesn't seem to work right. So the fan kicks on super hard and makes a high pitch annoying noise, it doesn't actually do it's job unless it is cranked all the way to max, and even then only after a few minutes. I tried cleaning it out to see if that was it, but it didn't seem to help that much. Not sure if anyone else ever had that issue but I figured to ask. Plus it is nice to have when either me and my fiance are sick. I am trying to get it fixed because it worked when I was sick, and not when she was, for which I got in trouble for not fixing it. I would just get a new one, but it was a nicer model, and a gift from her parents so I want to give it a solid try. Thanks for any help!
  24. Hey everyone, so recently I just fixed up my old Dell inspiron 15 3452, long story short, death by fall damage of the HDD, years later got it an ssd, reinstalled windows 8 updated to windows 10, runs good now. So the thing is I was also using it to learn how to take my current laptop apart, just for the first time not being my daily driver. During that process I removed the fan assembly and heat sink completely, again I was curious. So my question is two fold, because I did that, took of the heatsink, then put it back, is it a good idea to reapply thermal paste? Or would it just be a good idea in general to put new thermal paste because it is so old? I got the computer originally in early college which is now about 6 years ago. As a follow-up, if I do need to reapply thermal paste, how would I properly go about remove the old stuff, and selecting a good new one? It's a gift to my mom who doesn't have a computer right now so it's main use is going to be the internet, and the occasional netflix streaming.
