  1. Depends on the game. i3s have better single core performance than the AMD X4 860K.
  2. That build is overkill for 1080p 60 FPS for those games, but if you are planning on playing at 1440p or at 120hz+ it'll definitely use that extra horsepower.
  3. I watched the Ultimate X99 Overclocking Guide - Intel 5820K Haswell-E video and Linus claims, if you are overclocking a 5820k, you should start with at least a 240mm all in one liquid cooler. Originally I was exclusively looking at cases that support a 240 all-in-one radiator, but then I came across this article. http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/h100i-elc240-seidon-240m-lq320,3380-12.html It seems the NH-D14 can deliver near 240 radiator performance at much lower fan speeds (and noise I'd assume). Is a NH-D14 really the best option for a quiet and cool 5820k? If that's the case, it'll have a huge impact on my case selection. I've been trying to figure out the perfect mATX case to get with an overclocked 5820k. And with a smaller case, managing heat is huge issue, and your cooler options are really limited by the case. Thoughts? Opinions? Other tests and benchmarks?
  4. Taking someone's build from $680 to $815 is a $135 price jump. I know you added more ram and a better PSU to the build, but OP didn't ask for that, and doesn't need it either. A 500 watt PSU would be more than enough for an overclocked G3258 and GTX 970, and still has extra juice leftover if you want to upgrade the GPU or CPU.
  5. Decided to look at the cases in volume. Corsair 350D - 41.5 liters Node 804 - 41 liters Fractal Define Mini - 40 litters Corsair Air 240 - 33 liters BitFenix Phenom M - 31 liters Silverstone TJ08b - 30 liters Silverstone SG09B - 23 liters Silverstone GD05 - 21.5 liters The Corsair Air 240, Phenom M, and Silverstone TJ08b seem to be in the sweet spot of size and compromise, now I need to figure out which one has the better cooling and fits my needs, or see if there's any other cases. Phenom M seems objectively worse than the TJ08b in design, except in looks.
  6. That power supply is complete overkill, you could easily save some money there. Even with 2x GTX 980's a 700 Watt PSU would be more than enough. Is there a reason you are getting a 5900RPM HDD? There's also cheaper 16 DDR4 ram kits, could easily save $50 there.
  7. What about the Corsair Air 240? Size in volume 397 x 260 x 320 = 33 liters Corsair Air 240 344 x 307 x 389 = 41 liters Node 804 450 x 210 x 440 = 41.5 liters Corsair 350D
  8. I tried to do a mATX x79 build with a 6 core i7. For some reason there was only 1 motherboard option, so it'd actually be more expensive. 9. Most applications that I personally use, don't use GPU rendering. And the ones do use it, render so fast getting a new GPU will only save 30 seconds here and there. And what x79 processor would I get?
  10. Definitely looks like a good option, only $10 more than the Node 804.
  11. 1. Budget & Location $900ish USA 2. Aim Video game art content creation. Playing games. 3. Monitors 2 1080p monitors, may add a 3rd 1600p display in the next year 4. Peripherals Do not need peripherals. 5. Why are you upgrading? Need more processing power, It's a gaming bottleneck and slows down baking and rendering. Still on a core2quad. Current build Cored2Quad Q9450 3.2 ghz - 8gb DDR2 Ram - GTX 760 - 256gb Crucial MX100 - 2x 1TB HDD I will be using the GTX 760, 256gb Crucial MX100, and 2x 1TB HDD. I do not want to reuse my PSU so I can put my old GTX 9800 in that build and still have it around to keep or sell. Goals Small, quiet, looks good, cool temps, not wasting money. I'm also hoping to get some holiday sales. It will depend on the case selection, too. Memory: Don't care too much, prefer 16 gig 4x4. Would like it to kinda match the motherboard if it's within $15 of the cheapest option Motherboard: GA-X99M-Gaming 5 or EVGA X99 Micro, they are both around the same price, the GA-X99M-Gaming 5 isn't available anywhere yet. Case: I want looks, small, quiet, and cool. I like the Fractal design, but not sure about cube vs mini tower. I've been looking at the TJ08, too. Power Supply: Want some room to upgrade to a bigger GPU in the future. I'd prefer a gold rated on to cut down on heat, and am kinda interested in the ones that have silent fan off modes at low usage.
  12. Do fan filters have much effect on noise? (Just comparing a build with them on and off)
  13. Yup, live right buy Microcenter, that's why I adjusted the i7-5820K to $300. I was going to try to sell my old build to help offset the cost of a new PC. I have a 9800gt to throw in it. I'll have to read up more on the watercooling options and figure out what will work with that case.
  14. My current build is ancient at this point, I'm still running a core2quad Q9450, slightly overclocked. Looking at the i7-5820K, I should easily get at least 3x the performance from various benchmarks. I'll be reusing my GTX 760 and SSD from my current build, so I zeroed those out on my PC Part Picker build. I'm in no immediate rush to build a new system, so if price drops or new hardware is imminent I might consider holding off, but otherwise I'd like to build it soon. I want a smaller computer so I went mATX, I wish there was a few more motherboard options for 2011 v3. I like the inverted motherboards, makes me feel safer about using a closed loop watercooler. I know the build isn't balanced for gaming, this is a workstation first, and GPUs are easy to upgrade. I'd prefer the computer to be a quiet as possible, is it worth it to get a PSU that has a fanless mode at low usage? Will I have sufficient cooling?
