Thirdgen89GTA got a reaction from WkdPaul in Building a PC Should Be By Needs And Not By Budget. Wrong?
What do you mean by "Didn't last long."

Are you talking about the pace of technology advancement, or the actual working lifespan of the part?

Because even my OLD stuff that is more than a decade old STILL works fine.

heck, I have an entire Intel C2D e8400 with mainboard and I think 8GB of ram that technically STILL works.  I have another AMD A10-7850k APU mainboard with 16GB of ram that works too...etc.  There is nothing wrong with the hardware other than its age.  But if I found a PSU and case for it, it would still boot up and work like new, a very slow new, but new all the same.

I don't have any of the benchmark screen shots, I'd have to grab a virgin drive and test to snag them.

But right now I have two Go To's depending on your combination of budget and use case.

If you are buying an Enclosure that you aren't going to be swapping drives on often, and you don't want to spend a ton, Go with the TDBT enclosure.  Its cheap at about $26 + Tax/Shipping, excellent heat dissipation, and it has been rock solid reliable.  I have been using it with a Samsung 970 Evo 500GB SSD for my Time Machine backup and its god amazing fast, the fastest the 3 types I have.  Never had a single disconnect and I've left it connected to my Mac for weeks at a time without issue.  Its also machined better than both the Tripplite and Shinestar. The PCB slots in and comes with anti-vibration pads to make a nice solid mount.

This enclosure is also the fastest of the bunch, but only by about 15-20MB/s pure sequential with large files.

TDBT M.2 NVMe SSD Enclosure with Heat Sink, 10Gbps USB-C to PCIe NVMe M.2 Hard Drive Enclosure with Thermal Cooling Pad, NVMe M.2 Drive to USB-C External Storage Enclosure, Fits M-Key B+M Key NVMe SSDby TDBT

If you are buying an enclosure and plan to be swapping drives frequently, or can afford to spend basically twice the TDBT cost, the Pluggable USB-C enclosure is the winner by FAR.  The sheer ease of use in swapping drives combined with just how cool the Realtek chipset runs is a pure winner. The enclosure locking mechanism is so well designed and latches shut with a positive feel.  It feels so good I've found myself using the case as a fidget device.  Just latching/unlatching when bored, lol. It comes with adhesive thermal pads, but I omitted them due to how often I swap drives at work.  But even without the pads its cool as a cucumber.  With the pads to spread heat to the case, it would keep even the hottest power hungry drives in check.  But its expensive, at $50.

It does however have one draw back.  The included USB-C to USB-A and USB-C to USB-C cables failed to negotiate at USB 3.0 speeds, I was limited to USB 2.0 speeds.  As I have an abundance of USB-C 3.1g2 and USB-A 3.1g2 cables so I never contacted the MFG to obtain new cables.  But these cables feel cheap, and didn't work on the first enclosure I bought.   At $50, the cables should be higher quality.

Plugable USB C to M.2 NVMe Tool-free Enclosure USB C and Thunderbolt 3 Compatible up to USB 3.1 Gen 2 Speeds (10Gbps). Adapter Includes USB-C and USB 3.0 Cables (Supports M.2 NVMe SSDs 2280 2260 2242)by Plugable Technologies

My weekend warrior is averaging 13.3MPG.  Lulz.  I suppose that's what happens when I cannot keep my foot out of it, and shift around 3500-4500 in daily drive.  And when people annoy me, I drop down a gear or few, hammer down, and don't let off till the it the shift light blasts my face with laser red lighting at 7200rpm.

There is nothing quite like the tsunami of torque that comes on from 4000rpm and carries all the way to the redline.

Next engine will have an even higher redline.  I want to build either a destroked 400ci sbc with a set of Profiler heads, or a destroked LS7 as the replacement.  Looking for 8500rpm-9000rpm.  But that's big money to build that.  One day, I'll do it. And it will be glorious.

Destroked LS7 at 8500rpm sounds like this:

Why not spend more up front for increased solar power production.  Build the solar grid to suit your power needs, include a battery storage system to store excess power produced by the day.

In the grand scheme of things, a computer really doesn't suck down that much power compared to a fridge, or microwave.

You can try and make it more efficient, but you are will be expending more effort on tiny gains.

Forgot to post this here.  Had my Focus RS at the dragstrip recently.  Sadly the video I do have doesn't have ET because the GT350 had "no clocks" on the back window.

    But it ran a 13.4 @ 105mph.

Car is bone stock, full weight, 3675lbs with me in it at the line.

This is right about where it should run in stock trim so I'm happy enough with the result.

You can even just do a straight in-place upgrade.

Use the USB Media Creation Tool to download the ISO.

    Mount the ISO.

    setup.exe /auto upgrade /dynamicupdate enable /showoobe none

Execute that from an Admin CMD prompt and it'll upgrade without asking a single question while getting all the latest updates.

If you want to add extra drivers you can unzip those drivers (standard INF style drivers) to a folder say c:\Drivers.  You can have c:\drivers\gfxcard, ...\sound ...\insertrandomhardwarethinghere.

Then you execute it with the "/installdrivers [rootpath to drivers folder]"

    setup.exe /auto upgrade /dynamicupdate enable /showoobe none /installdrivers c:\drivers

It'll recurse through "C:\Drivers" and all its sub-folders to find all the files.  This usually works best if you have an OEM like Dell where you can just download a driver CAB that has every driver for the system.

You need Windows 7 64bit drivers.  If Windows 7 64bit works, then you can likely run Windows 10.

The driver architecture between the two OS is very similar.  Not everything works, but but most of it will.

I pulled the datalogs and averaged the readings into a pivot table so I could manipulate and visualize the data.

Which gives me this.  Car is probably making between 450-500hp at the crank, right up around 6600 - 6700rpm.  Never been on dyno, this data is being estimated from AFR and MAF readings.

A very short trip home in the TransAm.  Recently got a new power steering pump so I've been driving it.  But it turns out this pump is bad out of the box, you can hear it whine around 30-40 seconds.

Thats also when you hear me wind the engine out to 6800rpm for 2nd and almost in 3rd too.

Basically its got some of all its engine noises.  Some cold start in the car, some warm idle, mild throttle just cruising around, and two pulls, a 50-80mph pull in 2nd, and a 80-120 pull in 3rd.

Its hard to hold the camera and not have the vibrations destroy the image lol.  The vibrations come through the steering wheel pretty bad at times.  But man does it move out.

Hardly.  Intel still sells enough through other OEM channels and directly to consumers.

Yes, AMD hit them HARD with the new Ryzens.  And Intel deserved to be hit hard.  They've been stagnant for years because they didn't have any competition.

For years I looked at my old i7-4790k and watched the 6700k, 7700k come out and wondered.  Why upgrade for a few measly percent.

Its only now that AMD hit them hard with the Ryzen that they've finally started actually designing real improvements again.

But they are still a massive company with a huge R&D budget.  They will catch up and come back as king.  Though I never want AMD to go away.  I always want them to be trading punches.  Monopolies are bad.

The Clone Wars is better than any of the new trilogy.  It unfortunately suffers from being animated out of order, however if you watch it in the correct chronological order it makes significantly more sense.

The episode "Landing at Point Rain" in Season 2 is incredible, one of the best seasons.  And overall Clone Wars has a consistently higher quality than there should be any right to expect for something Kids can watch.  Many of the seasons contain essentially mini-movies that take place over 4 episodes.

The last season 7 is mind blowing.  The last 4 episodes were clearly written to be shown as a single movie. I wouldn't be surprised if as a later release its recombined into a single 2hr movie.

Yes, because one of the drives will have failed to respond in time or returned data that is different from the other drive. When the bad disk fails to read the sector, it will mark the sector bad and attempt to relocate the data to a reserve sector.

The parent RAID controller, be it Hardware, or Software will also conduct a checksum test comparing the data returned from each drive.

Filesystems like ZFS are insanely robust, even on single drive solutions.  When you add in Mirrored, or RaidZ# setups..etc.

On the Focus RS forums someone complained about Torque Steer and how the MK3 RS is hard to control because it wanders all over the place.

To them I say, "go drive a Mazdaspeed 3!"

And then took a video this morning of no hands on the wheel acceleration with a 1-2 WOT upshift.  There is a slight tug to the right because of just a tiny bit of torque steer, and a crown in the road for water drain-off, and I'm on the right side of the road.

If I kept a pinkie on the wheel it would have staid 100% straight.

the way they talk about it, the wheel rips itself out of your hands.
