From the information I've been gathering. It seem like apple may have had a slight advantage of possibly a month or two. This may have had a lot to do with Steve Jobs and his keynote presentations. How better to generate interest in a product, than announcing the latest and greatest processor.
My experience with Linux is limited and was a long time ago, if memory serves me, I was using ubuntu 10.04. I only messed around with ubuntu, mint, Debian and arch, but ubuntu was my default distro.
