wamred got a reaction from kirashi in Madison reveals experiences working at LMG
Yeah, it's stupid that the legal system always wants things to be shutdown. How can we get better as a society if we don't know what has happened?

wamred got a reaction from Needfuldoer in Is Linus spoiling his kids?
I don't think so. He has shown time and time again that they are only allowed to have a certain amount of gaming time per day. Besides, they are his kids, I would hope he wants to spoil them at least a little.

That's actually a good point. I had never thought about that. There are so many people that I deal with that don't understand when to double or single click.

wamred reacted to jagdtigger in Synology Update Removes Even More Features
Disabled auto-update, this is just so beyond stupid.......
Because its easier than having to implement the 2FA part into hyper backup. Also it might request a token instead of storing the actual credentials.

NAS manufacturer removes NAS features, making it just a shitty server manufacturer.

wamred reacted to darwin006 in The BBC has launched their own Mastodon Server
Summary
The BBC has launched their own Mastodon Server to try it out for 6 months to decide whether and how to continue.
Quotes
My thoughts
Looks like major news outlets are looking for ways to interact with the public, start a community, attract more viewers and they want to have some control of the platform they do it on.
I imagine other major news outlets and media companies will be watching what happens with the BBCs "experiment" or going ahead giving their own Mastodon servers a try.
A lot of people go to social media for news, more news outlets using Mastodon/ the Fediverse could be a factor in driving more people away from Twitter and making Mastodon more mainstream.

wamred reacted to IPD in Starlink introduces 'data cap' of 1TB per month
Starlink might finally allow me to go live like a hermit in the woods. Because picking where to live has always been a balancing act between population density hitting critical mass of full-retard....and living without basic amenities (such as internet without massive lag) from being too far removed from society (where personal freedom is paramount).

wamred reacted to Birblover12 in AU health insurance provider, 9.7 million affected?
You would have thought, that with the amount of money the world's governments have, they'd invest in protecting the most expensive thing they own (their citizen's data/info). Like seriously, all it takes is a few hours with some job posts and a few million dollars and they could easily protect the sensitive stuff better.

wamred reacted to TheawesomeMCB in Apple getting dose of its own medicine with iPhones users getting messages that android user reacted
Summary
Google is giving apple a dose of its own medicine with iPhone users getting annoying messages that an android user reacted to their text message.

My thoughts
I don’t know if this is going to change anything with apple or not. I mean I feel like this would cause people to google why this is now happening and be very annoying for iPhone users. Which I feel is googles goal in the end to put pressure on apple

Summary
Youtube users have recently taken to twitter and reddit to show their frustrations at youtube's newest testing of 5 unskippable pre-roll ads

My thoughts
YOU WERE THE CHOSEN ONE! It was said you would destroy the Cable Networks, not join them; Bring balance to media consumption, not leave it in ad breaks! On one side, the ads are only 6 seconds long each, making the ad break only 30 seconds total. On the other, this is yet more of the slippery slope of ads youtube is slowly making it's users experience. I'm sure 5 10 second ads are just righ around the corner.

wamred reacted to porina in EVGA Terminates NVIDIA Partnership
At least in North America retail GPU market, EVGA were probably bigger than all AMD GPUs already:
https://www.anandtech.com/show/17578/evga-and-nvidia-to-split-evga-wont-make-nextgen-nvidia-cards
Current Steam Hardware Survey puts AMD at 16% in two way share vs nvidia. It's going to be a lot of work just to get a slice of a much smaller pie.

I mean, there's Windscribe and ProtonVPN which are free. And afaik, You'd just need to change your billing location once and that should be it.

VPN yourself to somewhere like Argentina, that's what I did and I'm paying less than £2 a month for the family plan!

That is how I accept the cost. I watch a TON of YT so I’m glad to pay it and not have to worry about buggy blockers.

wamred reacted to BiotechBen in Google increases RAM and Storage Requirements for Android 13
Phones with 1 gb of RAM are quickly approaching e-waste in 2022. I had a phone with 512mb of ram in 2017 and it crashed every time it tried to load a complex webpage and could only have maybe 3-4 apps open without it becoming unusable. If phone manufacturers would like to continue making 1/2gb phones in 2022/2023, then they aren't gonna be able to run android 13. I had a phone with 4gb that on Android 10 had trouble staying under 3.5 gb. And now with a 6gb phone on 12, it rarely goes below 4.5

wamred reacted to Senzelian in Framework Laptop - Full CPU/Mainboard upgrade kit
That's nice.
Now we need one of two things to happen:
1. Other manufacturers adopting the same principle.
2. Companies switching out their Lenovo/HP devices for Framework machines.
Edit: Imagine how cool it would be if local IT colleagues without having any certifications can replace vital parts of a laptop. Just recently the laptop of a user died in my company and it had to be send off to repair. If I could've done that at the location in maybe an hour or so, that would save a lot of money and resources. On top I could easily upgrade machines too. Everyone would have the same platform.

Yeah, I agree with you. On the one hand, you have to uphold copyrights, but it's a small bakery in a small town.

wamred reacted to jaslion in Verizon is giving 3G users a free 4G flip phone
I disagree here completely. For most people it's more than fine to use. Just because it's old doesn't mean it needs to be suddenly replaced. Yes a steady replacement to 4g is good but a sudden cutoff just feels wrong.
My grandma loves her 3310 and she can still use it just fine here. That phone is never going to be replaced and I'd be extremely sour if the network would cut it off (not that they can really do that since a ton of goverment infrastructure here relies on 2g bands still). Yes she can use android she has a tablet for internet recipes and such but she wants that 2-3weeks of battery as that is very important for her and wants to keep things simple.
