  1. @leadeater Isn't the point to disable automatic restarts, not updates altogether? I've seen some of the guides, found one that worked well until it didn't, then I found another one and I guess it's fine until MS decides it should control when my PC restarts again. The existence of bad guides doesn't equal lack of good guides
  2. Some guides are better than other, the reader should also use brain. You can't download more RAM, but you can clear startup folder and disable some unneeded services(this won't break the PC, but it may turn out you need some services you thought you didn't need, for example I had to turn RDP back on when I started using it). Guide is one thing, but the PC OPTIMIZING SUPER S0FTWARE TURBO FREE MORE RAM may sound alluring for some of the less seasoned PC users. Just 2 days ago we had to recover some password from Windows registry, so I found the guide which pointed me to the key and how to decipher the password, my colleague opted to use some soft that does the same thing for him, it worked, but I'm still afraid of what it did with the password(even though it's been changed since then).
  3. You just need to make sure the drives parked heads. There are better and worse models from any company, Seagate being historically the most likely to fail, but that's mostly unrelated to transportation. In your own car, you can make sure nothing is moving, and everything is positioned well @Nystemy described good practices. With shipping... that's when I'd get a backup and insurance. I worked at computer shop for some time and some of the sent back machines looked as if a truck drove over them, whatever happened, foam didn't help it.
  4. Or a bit more detailed: I did clean sxs folder at some point, if I had a 120GB OS drive, it'd be problematic, but I learned to live with that space consumed by Windows. I do agree that 150MB is nothing in that scale. And if you can't tell, it's Windows 7. I have found that since Vista, new Windows versions don't really increase the resource usage, Windows 10 can actually be the better OS for a low spec PC.
  5. It's great, but nobody would read all of that. Though I like how you can get minimal install of Debian and just install additional stuff.
  6. Oh, I was thinking of it in terms of material that they paid for lost, not 'lost income' that anti piracy guys love, but from that point of view it seems much more feasible. https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2018/sep/27/south-australias-tesla-battery-on-track-to-make-back-a-third-of-cost-in-a-year I wonder if there won't be a wave of upgrades with that sort of batteries in all the fabs, 127MWh for 90M Australian dollars, or $31M for 60 MW battery that would run for an hour,
  7. The title on youtube should be the same as here, $830 is in no way budget for just a laptop. For me, budget gaming laptop could even have a 1050, medium/low in 1080p is not so bad on a mobile device. What is unacceptable though is 6bit panel, if it's anything like the other I've seen, I wouldn't touch the 5 version with a stick. 60Hz on the other hand seems fine, so I have to disagree with the screen section of the review. I am really frustrated that it seems nobody cares about image quality. Gamers want as many Hz as possible, so you can have 120Hz+ screen cheaply, but if you want 1440p+ with good contrast and anything close to HDR, you're out of luck. TN is still being put over VA and IPS too usually, but then you try to watch the infamous GOT battle of Winterfell and see nothing. Computer screens are TNs that look not much better than my $80 ~10 year old display, IPSes with average contrast and that damn glow/uneven backlight, and VAs which are inferior to any VA that is put into TVs. I just don't get it, Netflix and Facebook don't need low input lag, why does it look like nobody cares about that? Is there no writer(?) in LMG who would want to rant about the poor selection of monitors that don't focus on FPS?
  8. I don't think they will need to explain what made this fuckup possible, as was said before, it probably had a backup that failed and that's it. There's also a point where you'd wonder if it's possible to salvage some of the stuff that's supposedly garbage, I mean, 6 weeks production would mean every single piece was at a stage, at which power outage means destruction, it doesn't seem possible and maybe with $10m of investment they could continue working on $200m of chips instead of throwing them out. Whatever is the reason, I'd love to hear a good explanation when they find out what exactly happened and what is the cost of starting the work again. To be honest, the way NAND prices look, it smells. The whole industry could probably gain more than was lost there if the news reports overstate the shortages etc. It would also be cool and scary it this is an effect of, for example, Samsung's spies' work.
  9. From the title I was much more afraid, there are always the ones who don't patch, but if that's the case, I'd be much more worries about OS and the rest of the software than this kind of a vulnerability.
  10. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aspect_ratio_(image)#2.35:1,_2.39:1_or_2.4:1 I love it, way less black bars on movies, from productivity POV it's also convenient for me.
  11. Aaa, sorry for confusing Photos with Drive, but as I said, Rclone is actively developed: https://github.com/ncw/rclone/issues/369#issuecomment-505599548 So there's Photos Support in beta, coming in 1.49.
  12. Since you did slapping Linus, here are some suggestions on recreating Sl Mo Guys videos in the next one:
  13. Can you ssh into Synology and install stuff there? This or whatever Linux on RPi should handle rclone with cronjob. Rclone would copy/sync data with Google Drive and can even add an encryption layer. Iirc it was used here: Rclone is actively developed, but the functionality you need has been there long ago already. I'm using rclone mount which is the most problematic feature, but the last time I needed to do something with it was reload after an update.
  14. Zen was faster than Intel's CPUs in some workloads, Zen+ in a bit more and was losing less in others, even if Intel was better for more use cases, AMD wasn't and irrelevant choice, and cheaper at that. This means many companies would have to choose between AMD and Intel servers that both do the job, but AMD is cheaper. Then we have some specific use cases where AMD offers ECC/more PCI lanes etc. in lower price tiers. From what I saw of this memo, Intel knows they will sell many processors just because the clients already have an Intel platform, but this also means that if AMD has significantly better prices, they will gain some of the hard to get customers who in turn, will be hard to get back.
  15. The old ones are packed with 18650 cells, which I think can take 3400mAh, I've a few of 2600mAh 18650s that take 6 hours to charge and it's normal charge, not slow, I'm sure Tesla has it's cells improved to be able to take those quick charges, but that's a tremendous amount of energy. I left my cell with a key ring thingy in my backpack, it melted a little hole in it where the metal was in contact with the material and the battery got hot to the touch, it also managed to significantly warm up my floor. Old info: I think it could be some sort of a bug in their control software, they could reduce the capacity temporarily until they find a fix that guarantees it won't happen again. All in all, it's crazy scary how much energy there is in such battery pack, my cells could output 20A within specs, which is 80W when fully charged, Tesla has thousands of similar cells inside and to be honest, I think using 18650 or 2170 cells is actually one of the safer methods.
  16. Untraceable by whom? If you've got spies on your back, you'll first need to find a way to get away from them, Then you can access 'clean' sites fairly securely, but if it's one of their sites, please go with BuckGup's suggestions.
  17. From my experience with canned air it's important to hold it the right way up, otherwise you will get moisture out of the dispenser. We'd do it trying to freeze some things, lots of fun though the pressure is unimpressive, so the cleaning effect is subpar to the air compressor.
  18. How many browsers have you tested? Does changing playback related settings change anything? What is the bitrate and format of those videos and what are your specs? Does it do the same if you play the video locally with different players? I think it is a software problem, but there's not enough info.
  19. https://www.splashtop.com/linux There are debs, but it's beta and those are for old Ubuntu versions. I'd go with Teamviewer for personal use and because it's really easy, if you have public ip, VNC or x2go wouldn't be too hard to configure.
  20. So going back to that fortune list and Apple's profitability, it's on the 1st place: http://fortune.com/global500/list/filtered?sortBy=profits&first500 This post has some painful flaws, number one being: Apple will not sell their original parts to repair shops, if they can somehow gain access to genuine Apple parts, Apple does everything in it's power to ensure it stops. Even their own certified repair places don't have access to many parts. Louis Rossman had a video where he had multiple examples from a place that is official Apple service for Macs which show that the best user experience is not their aim, an illusion of the best user experience allowing to extort users for more money sounds much more right. Here's the video, just remember that most of those things apply to nearly every firm, not only Apple:
  21. Yup, it's normal to block extensions in private mode, you solved it.
  22. What's your FF version? I'm on 68.0b9 (64 bit) and uBlock's still there.
  23. Actually you don't need the same size for dual channel(yeah, I couldn't believe either), I'm running 4GB 1600 and 8 gb 1333 and they settled at dual channel 1333MHz, though the more differences, the higher chance of something being incompatible. In my case I tested the speed and dual channel was over 2 times faster.
  24. That is an overstatement. Does submarine have no entrance? Is it unrepairable? A smartphone would get much bigger in exchange for more water resistance, but it's possible to make a device that would be, from an average person's point of view, waterproof. You'd probably have screwed in sim card slot with big o-rings, some shitty speaker that isn't bothered by water(or a really expensive one?), stuff like that.
  25. Going the other way with failed GTranslate: I assume those are the dialects you wrote about? I mean, what other reason would there be for so many words with (more or less) the same meaning.
