I mean there was a reddit thread the other day about the merits of buying the 11900K, and there were actually people defending it.

    So...

Mister Woof got a reaction from Dedayog in Looking for honest upgrade advice please
I just want to put my thoughts on this right here

    I have a 5ghz 8700k (DDR4 3200), a 5.1ghz 10900k (DDR4 4000), and a 5.5ghz 13700k (DDR5 6000), all OC'd and all have been paired at one point or another with a 3080.

While the 13700K does feel smoother than the 8700k, the overall difference between the 8700k and 13700k does not feel like night and day in games, despite the 13700k having nearly 60% higher single threaded performance.

I'm sure at some point that will happen, but that is not with a 3080 and not in most of the games I play.

I honestly wish I bought a better desk than the 13700k.

I suppose you could just split them up between 2 systems...16GB is still mostly sufficient. And doing so would be easier to overclock.

If that were me, I'd get the 13600k.

What will you do with your old system? It's still fairly competent and can be used. Otherwise, you can sell it.

If you do those things, you'll need to keep the DDR4 with it, which, to be frank, if you used in new platforms, 2400 is pretty slow and you'll want to manually OC which can get hairy.

Whether you go 13th gen or AMD, you will want to go with DDR5 at this point especially in your situation.

Mister Woof got a reaction from YoungBlade in Ryzen 7 5800x VS Ryzen 9 5900x || Paired with RTX 3090
5900x isn't really going to improve your gaming performance much if at all, as its going to be 2 CCDs vs the 5800x's single.

Personally I wouldn't bother. Given how inexpensive the 5800X is right now, I think around $234, you won't be able to recover much from selling that to replace with the 5900x anyway.

You could go for a 5800X3D as mentioned above, but they're more expensive now and I wouldn't bother with that either at these prices. Better to wait for 7800X3D early next year.

Booting at 6400 is likely going to be a struggle and there isn't much to gain realistically. I'm seeing repeated attempts from people to buy faster than 6000Mbps kits and in most cases having trouble getting it working. If you're the type to want to just buy the RAM, enable XMP/EXPO and have it POST/boot up just fine, I highly suggest sticking with 6000 max, preferably a solid M die kit with EXPO.

I've had this kit since launch and its been flawless, plus I know if I ever decide to tweak and push it a little, maybe 6200, it'll handle it. For now EXPO enables fine and it hasn't had a single hiccup.

Mister Woof got a reaction from Mark Kaine in Are these benchmark results on par with my specs?
at low load and idle, voltage will be higher. you'll want to focus on your voltage at load, which is when you've got a lot of current and power through it, which is when it can be problematic.

ps: you may also run firestrike,  its a bit heavier and maybe tells us more.

EDIT: yeah, im going to go ahead and say your system works probably pretty normal... *maybe slightly less than optimal* but 1000 points probably sounds more than it really is... maybe its bad cooling,  some sketchy 3rd party apps (rgb control software etc) or a bad overclock?

Here's #100 (similar specs) and there isn't a whole lot of differences, (u even beat them in some categories) but they're also *heavily* overclocked (maybe even ln2, look at that cpu/gpu frequencies lol)

I'll keep looking but so far i don't really see anything abnormal with ur system... maybe others can spot something...?

You are welcome to believe your 3900X is a great CPU, and I'm not disagreeing with that.

But time and again, reviewer after reviewer have confirmed that Ryzen was not "better" at gaming until 5000 series. You may talk about your tuned timings all you want, and then we can talk about a 5ghz overclock on the 8700k as well, which makes the difference even more apparent.

The core latency on Ryzen 3000 was just not good for gaming and not resolved until 5000 series.

They both have the same playbooks when they're in the right position to do so.

For example, while you believe AMD is the value-oriented segment, in the CPU sector, they are focusing on the top end high performance market and charging as such, leaving Intel in the position to make up ground with lower prices.

If AMD had more powerful GPUs they would ask more for them.

Kind of how like the 6600, 6600XT, 6700XT, 6800XT, AND 6900XT exist and outperform their 3000 series counterparts but people still prefer the Nvidia cards.

We spend a lot of time obsessing about hardware, which team is faster, more efficient, etc....but I've found over the past couple of years that the real bottlenecks for me are:

    1. Time. I never have enough time. Got work, family, obligations. Therefore I have to be more selective of what I use it on.

    2. Games. There are just few games in recent memory that really wow me.....and outside of one or two, most are indie types that could run on a potato. Perhaps because of #1, I've become more critical. I'm not sure really.

But mostly this. I don't have much time and there's too few games worthy of it.

You likely need to do a BIOS update on the board. Natively Z690 boards don't support 13th gen without it. The Asus Z690-e does have a BIOS flashback option. Download the latest BIOS from the Asus website onto a thumbdrive and format it as specified. Then stick it in the USB port that is outlined and says BIOS. Then press the button. Instructions can be found inside your users manual as well on how to perform this function.
