The 3070 was the 2080 Ti replacement, the 3060 Ti was the 2080 replacement.

Your conclusion is still right, but there is more of a gap than you gave credit for.

Yup true but doesnt the 2080ti still perform 10% better than a 3070?

I looked it up again and my tought of about a 15% difference between the 2070s and 3070 is true so not a good upgrade that you might often not even notice

No, the 2080 Ti performs about the same as the 3070 which is ~10% better than the 3060 Ti.

About 30 percent uplift in performance

Not really. The 3070 is a 2080 replacement and a 2070 super already comes close to those levels.

So basically a waste of money.

I would be saving up a bit more to go for something else. The 3070 is a bit of an uplift, yeah, but it's not massive. There's not a ton that a 3070 can do that a 2070S can't. Personally I'd want at least a 3070 Ti for an upgrade, and a 3080 or higher would be preferred (including all AMD equivalents). If you snag a really good deal on one used, say $300-350 for a 3070 yeah go for it, it's a pretty nice upgrade for not that much more and 3070s are the highest end GPU from Nvidia I'd personally feel comfortable buying used (GDDR6X can degrade a bit from mining, and most 3070 Tis and higher I would assume were used for mining and I wouldn't trust the long term reliability of those cards). Plus, next gen GPUs are right around the corner, so it's probably worth waiting and getting something like a 7700 XT or RTX 4060 Ti when it releases.

My backup of files and program exe's, only needs 3GB of space, for what I need to transfer.
My other stuff is either on another hard drive or on a server/cloud.
When I do a fresh install of Windows I always disconnect the other hard drives (so I don't delete them by mistake - done it before)
Then only re-connect them when everything up and running.

You can but backups to a USB are going to be SLOW. Used to backup to an ancient Barracuda ES 750 using the built in Windows backup tool and 500gb took all day, that was a 50mbps drive... can't imagine a USB stick lol

try each stick individually, could be one of the sticks is bogged, or 2 from the 2nd kit.

'I added the second kit about an 1 to 2 weeks ago, the ram is the same make, version and timing as my other kit.'
    doesnt mean there the same

are you sure you ever turned xmp back on? after you got the new kit? if not then xmp may just not be stable with 2x2x8 and you might need to do a bit of manual tuning

I go for NAS drives for 24/7 operation. You could get away with standard ones, especially if it's not actually being used 24/7 though, you could spin down the drives when not being read/written to.

GazCBG reacted to LAwLz in How Do I Tell My Parent Why I Need To Upgrade
Okay, so the situations is this:

You're a 13 year old kid who has saved up money for some computer parts. You have now ordered a new CPU (and I assume motherboard and RAM) but you're worried that your stepdad is going to question you why you spent your money on it. The reason why you ordered these parts is because you want a faster computer, so now you want us to come up with arguments that you can use against your stepdad
    Correct?
Here is what I think, and how I would address some points raised in this thread.

No, that's not true. At least it wouldn't be true in my family. As long as you live at home, and your parents are your guardians and caregivers, you have to follow what they say, even if they say "you can't spend money on this". If they tell you "you are not allowed to buy this" then it doesn't matter where your money came from. Their words are the rules until the day you move out and no longer rely on them.
Same goes for computer time, drinking alcohol, etc. Just because it's "your computer" that you bought with "your money" doesn't mean you can do whatever you want with it, like ignore school to play games. Right? This is not directed at you @AntDeGamer by the way, it's directed at everyone going "it's your money so you can do whatever you want!".

Please don't. That's the cringiest thing ever. Yes, there are some positive things to playing video games. There are also some positive things to drinking alcohol, but we don't use that argument to encourage OP to start drinking beer right?
Focusing on the positive aspects of gaming and ignoring the negative aspects does not work. Any parent with a half functioning brain will see right through that crap, especially if it's coming from a 13 year old.

Remember that this is just one side of the story and it's coming from a 13 year old who is mad. Ask any teenager and they will probably give you plenty of stories about how their parents are "the worst" and how mean they are. For crying out loud one of the "mean" things OP's stepdad has done is not liking parkour because it might be dangerous. That's not something a "mean" parent would do. A mean and bad parent would not give a shit.

Here is what I would have done:
    1) Tell them what you're buying before ordering it. This builds trust, which means your parents won't question you as much in the future.
    2) Learn to make some better arguments than:

Pretty sure your GT 710 has NVENC support. That should allow you to record without putting any extra stress on the CPU or GPU.
You don't need a fast machine to code on. In fact I'd say your core 2 duo is very overkill for basic python scripting.
What kind of school projects needs an 2600X?

I got through college with a Core 2 Duo laptop. Pretty sure you can get through middle school with it too.

    you're right, we're not ready for that.....yet.

Not something i would advace for, certainly,

but if i did i would go with the classic
"i don't know what happened, i woke up and all the pins on my CPU were bent, the RAM was snapped in half and the motherboard was scored with some kind of large blade"

that kind of stuff always just happens while you sleep and is $100% believable.

This whole thing is quite short on details.  There is a CPU bought but no actual description of other parts or what the current rig is.  It sounds like half an argument.
