  1. That's a pretty good information you just gave me. I might try to get rid of it. Even more so because I already own a beefy gaming desktop and I don't really need this laptop. (Ryzen 2700x + RTX 2080). Anyway, for the sake of it, and because I'm curious, I'll let this thread open for a while to read what people think of these kind of projects.
  2. Budget (including currency): 200 € Country: France Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Gaming / Tomb Raider (new ones), Party games, Final fantasy games, RTS games like Age of insertname, Other details : I own several CPU coolers, custom zalman ones intended for 775, stock from Ryzen 2700x, stock from intel Q6600 and i5 3570k. I also have a lot of spare parts from old workstations, servers, and laptop or desktop computers, from all generations in the last 30 years.. There is workshops around my home with 3D printers. Hey Guys ! I own a MSI GS70 2QE. An overall good gaming laptop suffering from heavy overheating. I already changed the thermal paste, it helped, but not so much. Intel overclocking really likes to boost the CPU. So I undervolted it, and again, it helped a lot. Then, I thought : i'm not using this laptop that much as... a laptop. So, whynot transform it into a desktop PC ? I would like to do several things : - Put a beefy cooler on the CPU. - Upgrade the ram (8gb + 4 gb are installed atm) - maybe upgrade the GTX 970M to something more... modern, but its not mandatory. I've seen videos about these transformations, but i'd like to keep the screen, as it still works pretty well, except for one dead pixel. Several questions hit me : - Do you think I will me able to plug a desktop cooler ? (I do NOT want to replace the CPU, rather eleminate the thermal throttling) If yes, how can I lower my chances to break everything, is there anything I need to know ? - On a scale of 1 to screw everything, how likely am I to break the little fucker ? If I manage to get it done, i'll share my experience with you guys, so you can learn from it and do the same... if it works. Cheers !
  3. Hi ! I have the aforementioned motherboard and a 2700x CPU. I bought these ram sticks : G.Skill Trident Z RGB 16 Go (2x 8 Go) DDR4 4266 MHz CL19 Using the presets, I can't have them running stable at anything more than 3200 Mhz. I bought these thinking "ok if they can go to 4266, they can do 3600 at tighter timings". Am I wrong ? Or do I just need to tinker ? Or am I better of trying to run it at 4266 CL 19 ? I'm a bit lost, I'm not used to tinker with the ram.
  4. I'll go for a RTX 2070 Super or a RTX 2080 and I'll sell my GTX 1070 to my brother for 200€ (I think it's kinda fair as the card is in pristine condition). As for the cooling system, can't I do anything with it ? Like mod an old laptop and hook it to it ? Or repurpose it in any way ?
  5. Can't I, like, take the ram from one card and solder it onto the other ?
  6. Hi guys ! Some years ago, I was the happy owner of a GTX 760. I built a computer for my brother and I made him buy another one (the same MSI card). Then, when i bought my KFA2 (or Galax), GTX 1070 EX, I gave my 760 to my brother so he can use it in SLI mode. My brother has a MSI Z87-G45 GAMING, powered by a seasonic PSU. The setup worked just fine for two years. Then, not so long ago, the computer crashed. Resolution was bad, artifact showed up. We tested both cards. Card 1, lets call it Django. Django has two fans. One of the fans sometimes... does not work. Sometimes works... it spins, then stops, then spins quickly, then slowly... no image, card not detected. Card 2, lets call it Marise. Marise shows artifacts. But Marise is detected by the computer. My brother never overclocked the cards. He has a Zalman Z11. I don't believe they could overheat. My brother hooked up one of the cards and used it alone for a time, I believe it was Marise. But at some point the card stoppped working. I don't believe we can repair these cards. Tho I'm pretty amazed he could kill 2 cards at almost the same time. But the cooling system if... well... cool ! What can I do with these cards ? What would you recommend ? Is there any possibility someone could repair it ? Could it come from something stupidly simple ? Can I do ANYTHING at all with the cooling if I decide to dismount it and throw the GPUs away ? Thanks !
  7. Thank you all for your help and your advices. What a great community. Are there any big difference between the different X470 regarding the ability to setup RAM and OC ? Knowing we'll go for the Trident Z anyways.
  8. I don't really care about how it looks. I'm mostly disturbed by RGB. I just like it to be as clean as possible as I vacuum my rig once a month.
  9. Agreed. I can run everything at a reasonable FPS count atm. Waiting might be the good choice. I'm a bit disappointed they did not release R-3000 already... it looks so promising. The only thing that scares me is 1080p 144hz G sync display availability. I'm afraid to see them disappear and to be forced to go for something else. It's already quite hard to find at a reasonable pricing.
  10. You made me laugh. Thanks guys I'll check that out. And what do you think about AM4 ? I noticed the 8700 K is a great choice, but my concern is about Ryzen 3000. Picking a 2700x would allow me to go for a new Ryzen, and sell the 2700x to reclaim some bucks. But I guess it's kind of a bet... Any thoughts about that ?
  11. I don't really have a budget. I could say 1 500 Euros for the tower (seems reasonable to me) : Location : France, Paris - Mobo - Case - Cooling, if needed - CPU - Ram - System disk - PSU (I don't think I need to upgrade from the 1070 to play at 1080p over well 60 fps ?) As for the screen, I just want something nice with G sync that's also great for competitive games. To be clear (or not clear) : I just got a big paycheck, but I don't like to throw money for nothing and I always managed to make wise and cheap build (i'm really proud of my 3570K). But it always takes me litterally weeks to build something because of that... and I'm sick of waiting. I want to new toy ! Best availability of components : - Amazon.fr - Materiel.net - LDLC.com
  12. Hello folks, I had a dream. As a child, I said to myself "When you'll earn your first paycheck, you'll be able to buy the PC of your dreams." Here I am. I always bought my computers during sales etc... now, I can afford the glorious PC of my dreams. Main use : Gaming Secondary use : Streaming (But I own several other rigs I could use to encode video on the go) Goal : - Achieving at least a 144hz - 1080p capable build (I'm not sure it's worth to go 1440p, and anyways, I dont like my screen to be bigger than 24" ) - Games : A lot, mainly : Quake Champions, Starcraft 2, Overwatch, Rust, Minecraft (heavily modded) + Far Cry 5 - Productivity : Photoshop, Drawing with a tablet The RIG I own atm : - Intel 3570K @4,3 Ghz - Macho cooler (I don't remember which one) - Asrock Z77 Pro3 - 16 Go DDR3 1600 - KFA2 GTX 1070 - A bunch of SSDs / HDDs - A great PSU @750 W (for now i'll keep this GPU on the new rig) My thoughts : Bang 4 bucks : - I noticed the 9900 K might be the best "consumer" grade CPU. But it's really expensive. I can afford it, but I'm thinking... the main thing I'll be doing with this Rig is gaming, so I could go for a i7 9700 K, i7 8700K, or the i5 of the same gen. I stream on occasions, and I'm using a secondary I7 laptop to do so. It works fine, but it takes room, and It's loud (MSI GS70 2QE). So if possible, I'd like to stream with a single PC, but it's not mandatory. So, that leads us to : the 2700x is really great at everything and it's really cheap compared to what intel has to offer. The other consideration is : Ryzen 3000 series are coming this year and AM4 will allow me to upgrade if I want to. I'm not sure Intel will release anything compatible with the Mobos available atm. So my first thought lead me to pick the 2700x. As I want to pull the best from this CPU, I started looking into the best DDR4 kits and the best Mobos. But eh... OK... it's expansive. And I'm strating to think : - Pulling the best from the 2700x, using the best DDR4 kit, configured the best way, with the best luck, with the best mobo for this chip that will allow me to upgrade further in the future increases the price of the build so that I could get close to an Intel build with average mobo and average memory. (But I did not do any simulation on the intel build so I'm not quite sure). What I think the best is : (with no considerations about the price) : - Trident Z 4266 (to run at 3434 at 14-14-14-26) - Asus Crosshair VII I'd like to have your wise words about these thoughts, please. As for the screen, I'm thinking about going for the Acer Predator XB241Hbmipr. I know it's a lot of questions, I'm sorry if I appear to be totally mislead, but I read a lot (LOT) of benchmarks, articles and so... and I'm a bit lost right now.
