Yea, I think they meant default from intel. Older CPU’s, I think even my i7 2600k mobo had the option, may even my 920, I don’t quite remember.

Anyways. Yes, it’s a thing. But as I said it very seldom used. I don’t know if a way of finding out which core is the best, nor have I ever seen any review or documentation on how; all I have ever seen is all core OC’s basically up until Ryzen hit the scene. I believe you said it has a light OC, why not just work on dialing in a more aggressive one and worry less about getting a single core to be faster? The initial step of a single core OC is going to be to find the max all core turbo anyways... once you get to that point, you can play around with trying to up the volts a bit and up a single cores speed by 100mhz above the rest. But, again, 100mhz likely will make no appreciable difference.

I'm planning on getting a new SSD for my brother's old laptop to bring some life back into it.

i tried plugging an SSD and the battery seemed to drain faster. i know that SSDs generally consume less power, but i just want to be sure.
he currently has a very basic 2.5'' 5400RPM HDD inside it and i'm thinking about upgrading it to a Kingston A400 or a Sandisk SSD Plus (both 240GB).
will i see a significant drop or improvement in battery life?

it ran well enough. it's not a main computer so it doesn't need to run super fast.

Alright, so, weird problem here: i had  a computer running windows vista, but then i changed some of its hardware and for some reason  it wouldn't boot. tried setting it to oobe/audit mode but that didn't work either. so i went to reinstall vista just to find out that when i boot it to the cd it says "windows is loading files" and when it finishes it just gets stuck.i transferred the hard disk to another pc and tried it again and it worked perfectly so i turned on oobe and transferred it back just to find out that, again, it crashes on boot. so i had the idea to install windows XP and then upgrade it from there (because windows XP's installer uses a different format, i thought it might work) and surprisingly, not only did it install it, but also boot into it! however, my version of windows XP is 32 bit and windows Vista is 64, so i couldn't upgrade that way... so what i've got now is a computer that will boot to XP but not any of the newer versions of windows (tried it with 10 also).
i SUSPECT that the problem MIGHT  be my bios, since they seem to be somewhat corrupt, however, i'm using a legacy MSI board that seems to lack any kind of bios flashing software (model: P965 Neo). i've also tried installing MSI's Live Update 6, but it requires .NET framework 4.0 and windows XP doesn't come with it. when i tried to install it it failed with the error code "0x80070643". dunno what it means

basically, can anybody explain to me why i'm able to boot to XP but not newer versions??? and also, what does error code 0x80070643 mean in the .NET framework installer???

For any CPU, use a pea drop of paste, and clamp down, so it will spread it across the CPU evenly.

sounds like it's thermal throttling hard. make sure that the heat sink is seated correctly and that the thermal paste hasn't dried off.

I'm not sure, but to me that sounds like something on your mobo isn't right... At first I was thinking PSU, but you mentioned you tried a different one so that can't be it (assuming that one works okay) I have to be really honest here, not sure how you could check if it's the mobo without testing a completely different one and placing everything on the other board...
