Mobile M.2 Network Card Smoking??

In that case I'm assuming it probably wouldn't have caused any damage to the slot, just the card? -
Plugged a mobile M.2 network card out of a dell inspiron into my desktop and smoke started billowing out of the port? I don't think I've damaged the port but I'm assuming I fried the network card, anyone have any ideas as to why this may have happened? I'm more curious than concerned
