  1. probably, the Intel IGPU is really good with Adobe suite and will speed things up for me. I will wait an extra month though to see the x3d and if AMD fixed all the bugs and issues with the 7000 series CPU's.
  2. Well, if it's cheaper then the budget (or fits the budget), I'll be able to upgrade it in the future and use it for the long run for more then what I needed it sounds good to me lol.
  3. I'll try it out on Sunday, I'll get the testing server at work by then
  4. Did not understand most of it lol, but I'll google the meaning and learn. All I wanna do now on the NAS is 3 things: - normal storage - plex/media server - steam cache server I think I'll need vm's for all of it to work on one server?
  5. Good news! I'm going to get an old ibm server to abuse while I'm at work. I still need to find the right mb and parts, but I'll have a chance to start software wise till I'll get all the parts I need. For what I understand, the best option is a used xenon mb (that supports 4x4x4) and cpu, 32gb and up ecc ram, cooling, adapters, I'll use an old gpu I have (gtx1080) and new storage devices (as they degrade). For future usage I can add optane as l2 cache. Did I get the basics right?
  6. Wow, you just made a full on beginners guide on how to buy the first server! Your eng was amazing and you are amazing. Thank you so much for the help, I'll look into all of it and see the costs and all.
  7. How much storage you ideally need? About 10tb usable storage Do you have some kind of budget ceiling for this system? about 1200$ - 1500$ Do you concern about the overall power consumption of the system? nope, but low power and quite will be a huge plus Are you gonna use this system in the long term? (like deploying it permanently, etc.). It's going to be my playground, but it will be nice if it will be possible to keep it for the long term usage Are you gonna use this system for other stuff than just a basic NAS? (like running docker/Plex/Nextcloud, etc). It's going to be only Steam cache system and Plex\other streaming service server What the main purpose to build this system? does it's need to handle many client at the same time?. Not many, up to 2-3 at the same time on a local network. it's going to be a fun playground to learn and try new things and at the end it will be used as a plain plex server and Steam cache. Many ppl suggested just to go with just to go with HDD as it will be much cheaper and I don't really need the speeds of the SSD (and that is true) All in all, after this project I wanna know how to set up a basic NAS for streaming, data and cache. If possible it will be really thin and really quite.
  8. I'm thinking on getting an Gigabyte Z690 Aero D and change the RAM kit to 6000cl34 (more then that and it's over 400$). SSD wise, it's the cheapest option for me, but I'm waiting to see what's going on with all the issues with the Samsung drives and if the driver update fixed the issue.
  9. z790 bords, but I just saw some videos about the fact that the 690 bords are uilt better in most cases and cost way less. Now I'm looking at the Gigabyte Z690 Aero D, it looks like a really good, but a bit lacks in USB's, though there are 2 thunderbolt's I can split
  10. You should be able too, as you can install whatever you want on the NAS. I'm just worried about the ram options there, it's a really low amount of RAM for a cache and streaming server (8gb)
  11. Hmm ok, I'll scratch that option then :). I was thinking of getting https://www.synology.com/en-us/products/DS923+ as it looks like a cheap solution that I can expand in the future. But the specs looks so freaking low, do I need more then that? or is it enough for 4k HDR and Steam cache?
  12. I'm considering getting an m1 mac mini and making it my NAS with a thunderbolt HDD bay
