I'll look into those canon lenses, the soviet ones seem a bit outta my comfort level. I'd rather just tell him about them and let him figure it out.

Yep it pretty much sounds like a jet taking off haha. But with headphones it's far less noticeable.

Mine definitely sounds like it's preparing for takeoff when I'm gaming with it, but it seems to handle Apex Legends and Dota just fine.

I'll have my Pro Tech Toolkit with me. I'm sure a lot of other people will have theirs too.

I'll be flying in from Penticton Friday night if anyone wants to hang before the event. I'm staying at the Samesun Hostel until Monday. I'll also be at the BYOC.

I'd say go with an Asus PRIME board instead of the Strix; those are cheaper and more basic, which would be better suited for a generic PC like this. Otherwise I think it will be fine.
 
The old PC could be used as an HTPC, I'd maybe throw in a GT 1030 for a bit more graphics power and to lighten the CPU load.

Its a decent upgrade, the only thing I might consider is if Ryzen would be cheaper for a similar (or better) specification.
 
The old system would work as an HTPC, depending on what codecs you are using for the video files.
 
Not sure how it would handle H265 or 4K, but for 1080p H264 I would expect it to be fine.

I think that this Sound Blaster will work fine for gaming.

Yes, Prime95 is unrealistically heavy on the CPU
 
As long as it passes XTU, it's fine. I myself add 0.03V to my last stable voltage offset after 5 mins burn out test.

I would not use RAID for backing up. RAID 1 for example is for mirrors. Whatever happens to the main drive happens to the mirror - including deleting files.
 
@Austinjh. I would suggest an internal drive in the computer and then use something like Syncback to have it periodically sync certain folders between the drives. If she plans to use it in multiple machines, BitTorrent Sync may be an option too if they're hers. If not, then get an external drive of some sort.

Sooo... I'm a perfectionist, and I wasn't really satisfied with a work I've done on that "main" board on which everything important will go.. So I decided to scrap it and make another one on a CNC machine and this is the new Corel drawing (yes, I had to learn to use 1 more program..) which will be final, and this is how the board came out
Also, I will probably scrap those plexi backplates too, so I'll make a new more precise ones soon
 

 

 

 

It probably wouldn't hurt to ask him but I think he will be satisfied with the 250x if he doesn't get approval from his wife.

If I were you i'd squeeze another $50 out of him and replace that pentium with a A6 or A8 APU, a Cheap mobo and a stick of ddr3 and call it a day.

You could get a 260x for about $120 but since he only plays WoW then it really isn't necessary and the 250x would work well.

An i3 3220 would be my recommendation, as for motherboard, any H77 ITX motherboard with Wifi would be good.
