After getting a hold of this i5-4690/Mobo/RAM bundle, I've had headache after headache trying to keep it cool. Two heatsinks and countless TIM reapplications later, I'm stumped. I have no idea why, but the CPU seems to always run hot, even with known good techniques. Let me explain:
Try #1
Using a thin spread of thermal paste, I mount an Acer stock cooler almost as tight as it can go. (This heatsink cooled an i5-3470, similar TDP, very well in the past) After launching Prime95 temps shoot to 100c instantly. Thinking it was a bad mount/thermal paste application, I re-mount with new thermal paste. Still no good
Try #2
This time I use the same thermal paste technique as last time, thin spread, but with a different cooler. It's a thermaltake downdraft cooler that I got from a friend, so it's known good. Also, a lot easier to screw in. Even though I could visibly see there was good contact to the CPU (a little bit of paste squeezing out the side), temps were still horrible. I waited a couple weeks and tried a re-paste, but this time with a small dot in the center. Also no good.
At this point, I think it could either be 1. bent motherboard causing bad contact, 2. bad cpu making too much heat for no reason, 3. motherboard feeding too much voltage while reporting a normal amount, or 4. uneven cpu heatspreader.
Please let me know if you have a fix in mind, or anything else I can try. I need to get this working as soon as possible. Thanks!
