  1. Was thinking of you and this just dropped in my Youtube recommendations. A lot of the tips here should also apply for CB radio too. CB is all good fun. But come join us in Ham Radio land too ok?
  2. Man, I've only started yet there is tons of information I could give you so I don't know where to start. Honestly, go out there and buy a half decent CB radio, get the manual and read it cover to cover. It'll have everything that applies to your local regulations and you'll be able to use it far better than 90% of the people who own one, especially if you learn how duplex works so you can use CB repeaters and get more coverage. Also start googling around to see who is on what frequencies as it can differ from place to place.
  3. Which type of radio would be the best for an at home system? CB, Ham, etc. If your goal is 'Truckers' it'll probably be CB radio. You don't need a licence for CB, however you'll find more contacts (and a much deeper experience) with Ham radio, which you'll need a licence. Would I be allowed to use one without a permit? If I do need one, where and how would I obtain one? You do not need a licence to own a radio and listen (in most countries this is fine). You don't need a licence to broadcast on CB using a CB radio. You will need a licence to broadcast with a Ham radio. Would I be allowed to ask people questions in the first place? Could there be a way to talk to them that wouldn’t impede on their job? CB is open to the airwaves to whoever is listening. You might not get truckers. You might just get other people like yourself trying to find people to chat. You're not going to get into trouble trying to start a conversation on CB, just as long as you don't interrupt or broadcast on emergency frequencies. If you go down the Ham route, then the study you do for your licence will train you in all you need to know for your licence level. What would I need to set up an at home station? How much should I spend on such a thing? Really depends where you start out. Radio much like PC gaming is a hobby you can spend as much or as little as you want. Is it possible to run a traditional microphone, like a Rode NT-1, into the radio to use instead of the hand-transmitter? Can a radio be ran through a audio interface, like a motu m-2? I mean, yes you can. Most radios it would require a bit of custom work, but there's a lot of Hams out there running with broadcast quality microphones. Ham Radio Crash Course is an excellent source of learning material on YouTube. Don't let the cranky old hams hold you back. The amateur radio hobby is a massive rabbit hole of awesome tech. From Morse code, to TV to satellite communications and all kinds of digital modes. It's not just old school truckers running AM/FM CB radios.
  4. It would be awesome to get that thing back up and running again. As much as I love the new radio tech I also admire the old stuff that was essentially cobbled together by hand by the mad geniuses at the time. I got something like this hooked up to an active loop antenna, picks up Air bands very well, https://www.aussiestormshop.com.au/digitech-compact-world-band-radio-with-ssb-aircraf Given the price of high end PC gaming these days, I think getting into radio might actually SAVE me money. You can get a top spec radio for the price of just a top spec graphics card. Yeah, I understand there's stuff that plugs into all that, But I plan on making my own antenna and other gear to lug up mountains. Nice. what kind on antenna do you have mounted up in there? I was thinking of starting out hiding a giant HF loop antenna going around my roof. Just a bit more info for those who stumble into this thread. I fell down the scanning radio rabbit hole having seen this guy (Josh from Ham Radio Crash Course) appear on the 'Modern Rogue' youtube channel. (Ham Radio Crash Course) https://www.youtube.com/@HamRadioCrashCourse (The Modern Rouge Episode in particular)
  5. It all started when I was sniffing out interference on my 2.4Ghz network and I started getting into SDR radio and it's all gone rapidly down hill from there. I'm now studying for my Advanced licence (In Australia) right out of the gate (Equivalent to highest world wide) and I'm here wondering if any in the tech loving space has gone down a similar road. Currently my interests are getting into digital modes in the High Frequency bands and learning Morse Code.
  6. Yeah not too happy with Gigabytes quality. I had a motherboard of theirs that died on me. Anywho. Killing this thread to not spam tech support. Feel free to PM me if you want to chat further.
  7. I feel so stupid. CPU and board is fine. Turns out the RAM was in the wrong spot. I followed the manual not my instincts. I know you should alternate slots. But I went A1 and A2 slots. Not A1 B1 or A2 B2. Fucking numbering systems... Now I've got to reassemble the damn thing.
  8. Yeah I reckon you're right on that one. Hopefully it IS just the CPU. Luckily I've kept all the original packaging. Those pins can be a pain in the arse.
  9. Thank you for that. I guess I'll take the Motherboard and CPU down to the place I bought it and hopefully get a new one under warranty.
  10. Description of issue Desktop was working last night. Tried booting it up this morning and it appears to be stuck in a boot loop whilst spitting out undocumented error codes. Possible dead motherboard but with a water cooled system I want to be absolutely sure before I tear it apart again as this would be my second dead motherboard in this system (last one died a year ago). I'm a freelancer and this machine is my livelihood that I can't afford to replace. So I'm after a sanity check and second opinion before I start tearing the machine apart. System configuration AMD Ryzen 7 1700X Processor Motherboard ASRock X470 Taichi AM4 Samsung 960 EVO NVMe M.2 250GB SSD Corsair RM850i 850W 80 Plus Gold Power Supply G.Skill Fortis F4-2400C15D-32GFT (2x16GB) Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1080 Xtreme Gaming WaterForce WB 8GB Troubleshooting steps you already did Monitor works (not the issue) Checked all power cables Checked Power Button Checked PSU Attempted Clear CMOS - (No response, No difference ) RAM is properly seated. Checked system for leaks. None found. Unable to test GPU or RAM in another machine as I don't have access to compatible machine. Having GPU unplugged results in the same boot loop and random undocumented error codes. Any additional information that may be relevant.
  11. Tesla actually makes a healthy profit on every car sold. The reasons Tesla has been making a loss all these years is because they've been investing in their money into manufacturing facilities for cars and batteries. I'm also not sure what you mean about complex Canada EH. An electric vehicle is mechanically very simple with very few moving parts. If you mean by the amount of computer systems crammed into your typical Tesla then yeah I can see where you are coming from. I don't think we'll see an electric Corolla AE86 anytime soon. That kind of simplicity is only found in DIY conversions unfortunately.
  12. They make some awesome hardware, their phones are simply the best, but they are the worst when it comes to right to repair and have a tendency to claim all invention/innovation as their own.
  13. Much like Apple, energy company Tesla hasn't made it easy for DIY folks to repair it's products. This has now changed as Tesla has released spare parts catalogue for all three of its current vehicle models (S, 3, X) with easier access to spare parts presumably to follow. https://electrek.co/2018/10/29/tesla-parts-catalog-model-3-model-s-model-x-roadster-public/ If you've followed the adventures of Rich Rebuilds on YouTube you'd know how difficult it is to get spare parts Tesla with wreckers and abandoned cars being the only real source of parts. A few business savvy types like EV West have even cashed in on the rarity of these parts by collecting wrecks and selling entire drivetrains for EV enthusiast. It's yet to be seen how easy the process is to access these parts and manuals but it's great to see Tesla make progress when it comes to supplying spare parts and repairs manuals to independent workshops and DIY enthusiasts. Apple however will likely make it even more difficult to repair your own devices. If Apple ever ends up making a car as it's long been rumoured. Expect your Apple car to brick itself if you try to change a flat tire without an authorised Apple repair technician. *edit* It should also be noted that Tesla has been working on this for over a year. Tesla might only be a "start up" but it's also a billion dollar company with lots moving parts like legal, engineering, Elons Ego etc... Not only would they have to deal with a ever changing and upgrading models (Tesla doesn't do yearly refreshes but they throw in upgrades/production changes as soon as they can) but all the documentation would have to be signed off by a dozen of so people from all the different departments to make sure it's all 100% correct. 14. ... and we are back. The apocalypse will have to be postponed for now.
  15. Makes me want to think what's happening at YouTube HQ right now. Alarms blaring. People running about. Techs furiously typing on keyboards so rapidly that there is steam coming from the keyboards. Lots of graphs showing numbers of cat videos served plummeting.
