  1. If they have a smart TV already, then tv watching/ timeshifting/ recording would already be supported, just put a USB thumb drive for storage. I'm guessing this is not the case? Unfortunately google has recently removed USB tv tuner support for their android tv products ( I have an Nvidia shield tv ) , so it will be difficult to enable it. I have a HDHomerun on my network with a Synology NAS running tvheadend. It's a bit to config but works like a dream. In the end tho, ease of setup and use, I'd recommend a smart tv and a thumb drive.
  2. The upcoming Arc GPUs include AV1 hardware encoding and encoding. This functionality will be included on Intel CPUs from 14th Gen, Meteor Lake, onwards. You won't need even -F SKU CPU for building a NAS with full AV1 encoding/transcoding. Thinking these CPUs may also be useful as a separate streaming PC. So....No GPU will be required for an AV1 capable streaming PC or transcoding NAS. Neat! https://www.tomshardware.com/news/meteor-lake-plays-videos-without-gpu
  3. Resizable bar is for gaming and encoding? Or just gaming... Would be something to find out when more testing is done.
  4. Hi all! I'm interested to know if I could use an old motherboard I have lying around ( MSI z87 gd65 Gaming with i7 4770k and DDR3 ram) with a new Intel A380 GPU. The idea is to use it as a NAS with the capability of an OBS streaming server to Twitch / YouTube (I have a separate gaming PC) using NDI. I hear the Intel A380 has a great AV1 encoder. The old Mobo has a PCIE 3.0 x16 slot and the GPU uses a PCIE 4.0 x8 whatchcallit. Will there be a conversion and any loss in bandwidth? Thanks in advance.
  5. All we need now is for Corsair to aquire Discord to reduce the number of icons in my systray.
  6. Been waiting for Asus to release that since CES in Jan 2017....c'mon Asus..and in the meantime release the 65inch pg65 while ur at it!!! I want both!
  7. Hi all! Im putting together a new build (not the current one in my Sig below). The motherboard is the z270 mis mpower titanium which has a raised shield over the I/O. I have a 280mm rad (kraken x62) and 2x 120mm rads on the end of gpus. Let me start by saying I don't need a critique. I'd like to know what case would fit these rads, considering clearance for the rads. I was thinking the nzxt s340 elite, enthoo evolv or in win 909. Thanks!
  8. Aha! Just found the answer to my question. You can add a drive as a separate VOLUME. This allows you use it as a scratch drive to move files over with http://www.patnotebook.com/adding-a-new-disk-as-a-new-volume-in-synology/
  9. Hi all! I have a Synology 215j 2-bay NAS with a 4tb drive inside. It works fine and I want to move it to another PC and put a new 8tb drive inside the NAS instead. I want to keep the data from the 4tb drive and move it to the 8tb drive. Only problem is the 4tb drive is set as a Synology hybrid raid (shr) so I can't simply copy it. Any solutions anyone can think of?
  10. Out of interest...How does the Elgato HD Pro and Avermedia HD 2 PCI-E cards stack up in performance vs ryzen?
  11. Good suggestion.. I'll look into it, though I think that's a Chromecast feature which this TV doesn't and cannot have..lol
  12. Hahahaha... Yes... Pretty much. Samsung have this app called Allshare which has a web browser and dlna file manager type listing.. the USB port works and broadcast works.. just no HDMI...Samsung looked at found a fried board inside but don't have replacement parts
  13. Hi all! I have a Samsung TV from 2010 I own which has HDMI ports that no longer work (thanks to my old housemate...Anyway). I have found that my synology nas can connect to the TV by dlna...Which works great using an Ethernet adaptor. I want to know if there's any kind of Chromecast like controls that work over dlna where I can have a cleaner play/stop and selection of files than the built in Samsung setup. I know it's an older TV and the big, rather odd, restriction I have is no HDMI.. which takes away from the whole experience I know I could have if could simply use Kodi/xbmc/Blu-ray player/console/PC...Sigh. There's no help as far as smart apps on this model (Samsung's 1st smart TV) - Ua46c7000. Any ideas on how to improve on simple dlna without HDMI?
  14. An easier and simpler way of extending your lifespan is to pass it on to the next generation the old fashioned way
  15. There's a new gene therapy technique called CRISPR, which uses a modified mechanism a virus uses to add itself to your genome within a living cell. If someone has their genome sequenced when they are born then we have a complete "undegraded" code seuqnce to refer to when using CRISPR to add/delete/ modify the nucleotides of your telomeres. Studies have been done on worms and mice which have had their lifespans increased using this technique : https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23956466 Synthetic DNA is a thing too.. small chromosomes are more easily synthesized than larger human ones.. not sure if an entire human chromosome has been synthesized yet since splicing lengths together is tricky to make stable, but will eventually be doable.
  16. Interesting journal article for sure. These researchers find specific epigenetic factors that are responsible for cell aging. Do we all remember Dolly the sheep? Well Dolly lived for 6 years. Dolly's identical "donor parent" was 6 years old when Dolly was born. Sheep usually live to 12. Coincidence? No.. Dolly's DNA was already 6 when she was born, so naturally occurring DNA degradation would occur in parallel with its "donor parent". The next step to fight aging would be extend telomeres, the end segments of our chromosomes used by our cells to protect against aging and cancer. The ethics boards supporting research like this is very limiting, especially in live humans. China seems to be the most aggressively researching countries in terms of genetic engineering today.
  17. My desktop has a 2* nvidia 780's and a 4770k with a liquid cooler and both are slightly over clocked. Working a dream at the moment. I'm running into the usual problem of games needing more frames per second to hit the magical 60 mark at 1440p. I'm wondering if I get a new gpu (10 series), will I need to upgrade my CPU also? There's no real features I know of i'd be missing out on cpu-wise. Cores? Threads? Etc... Little help?
  18. It says 240v - 110v on the power adaptor. I live in Australia and had myus.com mail it to Australia from the USA. I got a simple 10 buck 240v to 110v step down transformer from jaycar. FYI.. The $30 free Google play voucher doesn't work from here in Australia. On a personal note.. I love it. The controller is solid and faster than an xbox360 controller.. And it works over gamestream (local network pc streaming), but u need to first map it with Xpadder.
  19. I have a 4770k and can't get a stable over clock above 4.4ghz. I use the h100i and get temps around 55c on all cores. I only changed the CPU freq. Makes a big difference.. Pair that with 2x 780's in ski and its damn good.
  20. My MCE Remote keyboard. It has a mouse pointer, which I smashed in with a hammer so u don't need to press it in to use it everytime.
