I'd like to thank everyone for their time, it seems I am looking for something more unique than I was expecting.  While still unimpressed by the Thinkpad keyboard, I am getting accustomed to it. So I'll be keeping the P1.

Interesting.  I thought the MX250 was just a rebadged 150, I'll have to look more at it.  I've repasted a laptop before, but I have a problem in principle with doing it on something brand new, still under warranty.

That notebook looks great, but it wasn't just because of the the brand that I dismissed it.  The MX 150 only has 2GB of VRAM, which gives me issues with some models.  Also, IMO, super low end GPUs like that take more in battery life and price than they add in capability - not that battery life matters to me personally - this notebook uses the 10W version of the MX 150, not the 25W version, quite misleading on Huawei's part.  The same hardware is also available in the ThinkPad T480, but with the full 25W SKU.

Dig deeper into the ownership of Huawei.  The largest shareholder is Shenzhen Huawei Investment Holding Co, which is functionally a labor union co-owned by the city of Shenzhen and the native Chinese employees of Huawei, it was created by the provincial government of Guandong, which in turn is only an extension of the CPC in Beijing. In effect, the Chinese government owns about 30% of Huawei by proxy.

Ok, so these are both based on the 14++ nm process, both are architecturally identical to Skylake and regular Kaby Lake.  Both include identical designs to previous generations (Coffee Lake i3 is the same spec as Skylake i5, Kaby Lake R is the same as Skylake-H i7).  So why do they have different names, I'm struggling to figure this out and it's triggering my autism.  Is it just Intel's marketing intentionally trying to be confusing as usual?

Edit:  I know the products are targeted at different TDP ranges, but they've never segmented like this before.

He could probably sand down or snip the metal standing out of the solder points. Putting a coating of a restistive material on the plate might help too.

If he made a video where all he did was succeed we might as well watch someone else's video, and we would learn nothing about what could go wrong in a real scenario.

Because he owns a 370 USD server CPU. And a 2/4U doesn't fit in 1U of space. And if all he did was buy something with plenty of space, this would be nothing more than every other "Put a PC in an ATX case" video that there are millions on the internet.

PS: Don't ever mention the Atom ever again unless the device is going to be running on battery for more than 75% of it's running time.

@LinusTech Are you sure the backplate isn't touching any solder points under it? Because this looks like shortcircuit all the way.
I won't complain about the shield, but you'd have bought a 1U blank shield for it and cut the ports in it... which also should've been included in your "airflow talk" in this video, as the air goes through the I/O shield too

Everything you do in this video makes me question your credibility.

You put a $370 server chip in a router ..... WTF WHY?
You did not check for compatiblity of parts.

Here is what you should have done...... use a 2U/4U rackmount chassis since you want to rack mount it. (I would have just used a Mini-ITX case and called it a day)
A 2U/4U chassis supports a standard ATX PSU, a Standard IO shield, proper airflow, any motherboard you wish to use. Costs roughly the same as the 1U chassis you got.  And can still be rackmounted.

    Example: http://www.amazon.com/Rosewill-Thickness-Rackmount-Chassis-RSV-L4412/dp/B00N9CXGSO/ref=sr_1_17?ie=UTF8&qid=1442137996&sr=8-17-spons&keywords=2u+rackmount+chassis

You could have made it an interesting build if you built the router in something like the Coolermaster Elite 110 and then decided to DIY rackmount that case.

You could have easily made do with a dual core Atom chip or one of the Quad/Octo core integrated chips.

I'm not saying that its the backplate, but its the backplate. Its probably coated with something non conductive but since you've cut it and exposed bare metal which was pretty close to exposed solder points, that might have caused a spark to jump onto the bracket shorting out the motherboard.

Uber Hamburgler got a reaction from fatfinguh in DirectX 12, a coup d'état for AMD? - Ars Technica
Ars technica has done some benchmarking comparing an R9 290X to a GTX 980 Ti in DirectX 11.1 and 12.  I'll just sum it up to say that the 980 Ti easily trumps the 290X in DirectX 11 mode (we already knew that), but using DirectX 12, the 290X nearly matched the Ti in most scenes, and even beat it at 4K (actually getting semi-playable frame rates with a single card).

I won't spoil more because Ars did the work and they deserve to have you read the details on their site.

It would cannibalize the i5 lineup. Near i5 performance at an i3 price, Intel aren't looking to lose a lot of money here. The G3258 was fine because it was a shit chip to start with, so overclocking is like putting whipped cream and a cherry on top of shit.

I actually found out they modeled over another car in one of the moving videos.

If we take a screenshot of the scene, and simply extrapolate what's underneath by double clicking the car and changing the opacity, we can see what lays underneath. I think you'll all be truly scarred by the scene you'll find... THIS!!!!
    SHOCKING ISN'T IT??
HE DOES OWN A LAMBO HAHAHAH

You actually wouldn't believe how long it takes to re-draw in a background, even if it's done sloppily Or to find an orange lambo, with the right position and shading. That part i had to fudge, but oh well.

If you're on Windows, FormatFactory is excellent, it handles almost all codecs and containers with an easy to use GUI.
I've heard MediaCoder is good too, but I've never used it.

Otherwise, there are the multiplatforms, VLC, makemkv, Handbrake, , and FFmpeg.

They all have their disadvantages, Handbrake and makemkv are extremely limited in the codecs and containers they will output.  VLC doesn't handle batch jobs particularly well and it doesn't have support for variable or average bitrate encoding.  FFmpeg requires one to be comfortable with the command line, though there are GUI frontends, but they usually hide much of the functionality.

My recommendation is to learn how to use FFmpeg with the codecs you output to frequently - some codecs like faac use tags that differ from it's recommended standards.
