aDoomGuy got a reaction from bread94 in I really need some help. I'm kinda lost here. Which is better for gaming?
From what I have seen the 5800X3D mostly yields better gaming performance than the 5950x. In some cases the increased cache doesn't matter as much but mostly it appears to be good for gaming. From what I have seen.

aDoomGuy reacted to RONOTHAN## in Why don't we never have a motherboard that support VRAM instead of RAM modules?
Because GDDR is terrible when it comes to memory latency, and a lot of desktop workloads are a bit more latency sensitive than they are bandwidth sensitive. Look at the PS5 dev board for instance, it did actually use VRAM instead of standard desktop RAM and ran Windows, and it was next to unusable as a desktop CPU because the memory performance was so terrible. Look at DDR4 vs. DDR5 for instance, there are still games that do better with DDR4 than DDR5 because of that lower latency found on DDR4, imagine having almost 3 times the amount of latency instead.

I'm sure some workloads don't care, but they're also likely workloads that would be better suited to a GPU anyway, so might as well just leave VRAM on GPUs, and regular desktop memory for CPUs.

This is not true. SAM is actually fully working on Ryzen 3000 and B450 boards. The board needs to have the BIOS update for that but most at least have that to download.

OP: Install the latest driver, yes.

I think it's very possible AM4 will go down in history as the best socket ever. This is sort of sad, though, because that means that I expect AMD and Intel will never give consumers something this valuable ever again, but we should all be happy to have had AM4 while it lasted.

Congratulations on the upgrade! I hope it gives you another 5+ years of use.

Long story short: I've been using a Ryzen 5 2400G on a B350 motherboard, with 16Gb of DDR4 3200 RAM and a 4Gb RX580 for about 5 years. I never had anything to complain about, but I felt it was time to upgrade a couple of things.

I just installed a Ryzen 5 5600 and an RX6600 (both "non X"), keeping everything else as it was: performance has DOUBLED overnight, in both productivity and gaming tests. I mean 100+ percent more performance with just a mid tier CPU and a mid/low tier GPU. And this is while using one of the "worst" chipsets to pair a 5000 series Ryzen with!

Now, to be honest I don't remember seeing this much improvement, not only using the same physical socket but the same chipset as well. MAYBE in the Pentium II / III era you could have similar results swapping a low tier P2 with a high frequency P3 but that was over 20 years ago.

A platform allowing this kind of uplift with two simple drop in upgrades after 5 years, to me is nothing short of amazing!

Thanks for the insight, 6700 XT too expensive in this market. I'd love to have one but I'm not gonna shell out 1500€ on a video card. I'm playing a bit of DCS and MSFS how did you know? lol
Think I'll just bide my time and see what the future brings.

Thanks, was my impression as well. Better performance here and there but not worth an arm and a leg.

Online it looks like the socket needs DDR 200/266 MHz memory in a so-dimm form factor... And tbh with you the memory you've got looks like the right thing to me but maybe it's the wrong gen. Is there a sticker on the RAM with some identifying info?

aDoomGuy got a reaction from Somerandomtechyboi in decent temporary GPU until upgrade
Why not keep the 1050 until you can afford the upgrade? Spending money on some temporary upgrade will just reduce your budget. I get it. The 1050 is not very good, but isn't it better to get a better GPU once than two decent GPUs?

Everyone needs to come down off their rage horse and a take a long look at the "other brand".  There are just as many threads dealing with Nvidia problems as AMD, and just as many bugs that have persisted for years.  Granted some bugs are more annoying than others, but the other brand is no angel.  Just accept that we live in the age of, good enough, that'll do, we'll fix it later, and the customer will test it for us.

If your waiting for the next driver to fix your problems, you're going to be waiting a long long long time.  The biggest problem facing AMD and Nvidia is the nightmare called Windows.   Windows 10 and 11 and have become a cluster F of patches and updates dating back to Vista.. The code is old, sloppy, and very inefficient..  Trying to write a GPU driver for Windows has to be a Dev's worst nightmare, then you add in games that are just as sloppy and ship unfinished, and we're asking the impossible. There's just no way they can create a driver that works for everyone, by fixing 10 problems they create 10 more.  Unless MS designs a new modern OS from the ground up and game developers start taking some pride in their work, these problems are here to stay and there's not a damn thing they can do about it.

yeah, i wasn't sure what you meant with that, but i thought I'd inform you anyway that the 3070 was indeed much "better value" = )

And yeah, i agree, that seems always the intention behind cards like the 1008ti... they don't expect to sell many, it's really just for marketing purposes (iirc 1080ti had really low % in the steam surveys,  and 940mx or something was leading overall 😅)

it seems to be working for them because now people think 2000+ is "good value" (for a 4090) lol...

aDoomGuy got a reaction from Mark Kaine in 1080 TI vs 3070
Oh snap. I don't know why I somehow though this was about 4070 (Ti). 😅

Yeah 3070 was pretty good. 1080Ti and such cards IMO are just there to entice buyers shopping at a lower end. I can't imagine much money is made at such price points, but when you're top of the benchmarks many buyers will think they should buy the little sibling.

Yes, yes they did and also downgraded the memory to X060 card standard.

aDoomGuy got a reaction from lerodemmy in Question about Power mode setting in Windows
When on your desktop the CPU will go into lower power states by default. Best performance do not allow this to happen and you have noticed the results of that. I think there are minimal performance to be had in gaming but you might notice that your system will be a tiny bit snappier due to the higher idle frequencies.
