Deil Grist reacted to kangk81 in NVME on Rampage V Extreme
Thanks. I figured out that the NVME is not going to work if I have 4 cards in the board. I think I'll just stick to my old 840EVO.

Well, today is the big day.
242,615,296 - 239,638,457 = 2,976,839
So there you have it.
@Howlingwolf101 @Johnny K. @wcreek
@levibaker88 @MrLomax @DESTROYER17
(It was changed to the 13'th)

300 watt single-GPUs. I'm okay with it if performance justifies it though. Still waiting for info on Polaris though so I can see if I should get a freesync monitor.

Deil Grist got a reaction from cortexcortex in Which ship should I get?
I'd say just get yourself the basic Aurora package and wait for another "all ships flyable" weekend closer to the game launch to upgrade. Ship balance and flight mechanics are bound to change between now and launch, so I wouldn't go spending a bunch of money on a ship you might not like in 3 months (although you can earn everything in-game too, so I guess it's all a moot point with enough patience).

If that doesn't fix it, and you're not overclocking: try turning dialing back the overclock. It'll also crash sometimes with videos or games running.

Sounds like a driver issue. You also need to let WUs run to completion to get accurate PPDs (if you aren't already).

970 if you're not going SLI and going 1440p+.

Deil Grist reacted to GnatDaGnat in Worth the power draw for folding?
Okay guys, I did not want a war about whether I should build a new rig or not - I've made my decision on that already, I just wondered if people thought it was worth the 306W power draw. I even answered that question for myself with a couple calculations. Productive thread.

It's still 1500 points we wouldn't have had otherwise. Every little bit counts

Deil Grist got a reaction from don_svetlio in im going to get a new gpu for folding
Hmm. Perhaps someone will benchmark power consumption during folding, though it's been shown a lot of the Maxwell efficiency is related to changes for gaming, so the gap's probably closer to your graph. It's hard to say as the nano's not even on the folding performance chart.
Still, the fact that you can get 2 970 Turbo cards for the price of an entry Nano kinda kills the nano for me in terms of price to performance. I did some napkin math using your furmark numbers and it's 1.9x the power draw for 1.6x the performance to SLI two 970s vs a Nano, but the entry cost is the same, and you're exhausting the heat directly out the case (something I would value in a 24/7 folding rig).

Deil Grist reacted to Litargirio in Any folding tips?
It won't matter, if the hardware is kept at a reasonably low temperature.
Also, get a passkey and set your team ID to 223158.

Here is a link with the folding performance of all major graphics cards.

Best one might be 980ti, which is just slightly below TitanX. Or - if you have too many moneys - you can wait until Nvidia releases their dual TitanX card and get that.

Deil Grist got a reaction from FilipSebik in $500 Folding Rig
Oh, that's not my build; it was just a suggested part list. I have a 4790k and 970 gaming rig that I fold with on occasion. I just use the GPU when folding.

Deil Grist got a reaction from FilipSebik in $500 Folding Rig
You don't even need 8gb of ram. folding + MSI Afterburner + Speedfan + background processes uses 3.5GB for me. Put that $30 into more efficient components. Your CPU is also so bad at folding compared to a GPU that you might as well put in just enough to get your GPU to fold. I'd suggest something like this (and turn off your CPU worker): http://pcpartpicker.com/p/CtRYxr
This is assuming you're using the machine to fold and nothing else.

Have you guys seen this kind of SSD before? Looks kinda odd to me. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00HBKOI00/?tag=pcpapi-20
I'm sure Linus and company would get a kick out of it. Kinda looks like Luke!

Nice! I do like the look of this drive, but it's just too expensive for someone like me, so I'd rather wait for the 850 evo if I was to get a 3D NAND drive like this.

Deil Grist got a reaction from djdanster in What's in YOUR Tech Tool Bag?
It might be handy to carry a can of air in your tech bag. Many of the things you were carrying were to be used to diagnose cooling issues, and you never know when you might need to blast some dust out of a rig or scare off a pet.
Just make sure the can is protected. I can only imagine the damage a punctured can will do in a tech bag.
