  1. These work wonders, and some USB 3.0 cases actually came with these adapters when USB 3.0 headers on mobos were just becoming standard issue.
  2. If you are happy with win7 stick with it. The only thing you are seriouslt missing out on is some of the newer games that require win 10 (Namely the MS play anywhere titles like recore, forza and a couple others) You are also missing out on DX12, but given your graphics cards, you aren't missing out on it in any real way. As far as getting w10 to stop spying on you...there is a way, but Microsoft will undo any changes and re-name all the services with their next patch Tuesday. Its become a game of cat and mouse with them for that.
  3. Why not just get 2 1070's? jks. IF you can get the 970 for suuuuuper cheap, go that route. But at MSRP prices, definitely go with the 1070 and sell the old one.
  4. It will still be far faster than an hdd, but will be IN THEORY half the speed. In practise, the performance hit would really only be noticeable if you had 2 systems side by side, one on sata 3, one on sata 6.
  5. I don't get what your beef is. I know very well what a country is, and Europe is not one. While I may currently live in Canada, I can assure you that I was born in Europe, and understand what a union of countries is. Natural born Canadians also understand this. Specifying his budget in terms of euros does not mean that he necessarily lives in an EU country, as it is easier to specify budget in terms of a currency that lots of people understand instead of a local currency. Also, being in the EU doesn't necessarily mead that every site is the same. If you are in Spain and ordering something from a store in Sweeden, chances are that your shipping is gonna cost a lot more than if you order something from Spain directly. Lastly, at no point did his original post say "I'm in the EU", that was a response to my asking him where he is. Don't be a dick, and actually bring something useful or funny to the convo or don't post all.
  6. Some games don't even show a difference in load times from hdd to ssd, let alnoe sata ssd vs nvme ssd. I wouldn't bother upgrading unless you have the money and just really want it. From everything that I have seen and read about the tech, it is marginally faster in everyday computing but only really noticeable if you have them side by side.
  7. 1. Europe is not a country. 2. He specified countries in response to the post you just quoted.
  8. The first one you posted is just fine, the second one is just better though. Chances are the biggest difference between those would only really be seen in gaming. The only way to justify that extra cost is "because I can." If you are tight on cash, I wouldn't bother with the pricier one then.
  9. And ohh yea, forgot to mention, when asking for buying help, always include what country youre from because that changes where you can buy stuff from. Also, Linus is not from the USA.
  10. Yea, that thing looks pretty baller to me. Only thing is that GTX970M. Still a fantastic GPU, but the new 10 series are way better. That being said, there will ALWAYS be something newer and better out in a maximum of 6 months.
  11. Protocol overhead. Instead of the NIC (network interface card) talking directly with the CPU through the PCIE lanes, it has to go through the USB controller first. The only reason I mention this is because when using a thunderbolt to ethernet adapter on my MacBook air, my speedtests aren't as high as they are on my desktop. This may not actually be an issue in your case, but it is something that I thought i'd share.
  12. Welcome to the forums. There is very little chance of Mr. Tech Tips himself reading your post but lots of other (likely more helpful) people will be happy to assist. Ill start off by saying that I don't have a specific laptop to recommend but I can give you some guidelines. You have to decide on size and weight first. This will dictate the kinds of laptops you look at (gaming, ultrabook, standard laptop, etc) You gotta decide if you want this thing to actually be portable, or whether you want it to be "portable" in the sense that it CAN be packed into a large backpack but not something you'll want to do daily. Next, Quardo is out of your budget. You wont find a worthwhile laptop with Quardo under $2000. Also mobile Quadro isn't even as good as Pascal GTX cards for productivity anymore, let alone gaming. Lastly, Windows 10 virtual desktops are just a part of windows 10, nothing to do with your specific laptop (press alt+tab to access them) Any laptop with a dedicated GPU should be able to handle those games no problem, maybe with medium-low settings in tomb raider depending on the exact model.
  13. PCIe ones tend to come with better antennas, but largely theyre about the same speed wise. The only thing I can think of is that the USB one might have a slightly worse ping due to the extra overhead. (not an expert in this though)
  14. For like the 18th time in this thread, 1060 doesn't support SLI. Just cant do it. It doesn't have the SLI connectors on it.
  15. You don't have to sell it, but don't put it in the same system as a 1060 because it can olny stand to reduce performance and chew up more power.
  16. Try to tin those contacts before you solder anything to them. It looks like the contacts might have come off ant there is no metal actually there for the solder stick to?
  17. I have had much success with easeus in recovering deleted/formatted drives. One annoying this is that you will likely lose all filenames and folders but the majority of the files will be there, buts with names like "doc00000001" etc.
  18. Someone will correct me if I am wrong, but I don't think that you can BUY DOS anymore... So if that is the case I will post this link I found for you http://www.instructables.com/id/How-To-Install-DOS-622-Under-VirtualBox/ If I'm breaking and TOS, remove the link...
  19. Then you should buy a new PSU. If its a no-name psu in a prebuilt without any PCIE power, I wouldn't trust my new GPU with it.
  20. Are you talking about the 4 Pin CPU power, or a Molex adapter because 4 pin PCIe doesn't exist.
  21. LOL, what specs is that computer running, since it has DDR4 it really shouldn't be poo and maybe only a couple things need upgrading inst3ead of a totally new system...
  22. I say set your voltage to constant. Find the lowest you can set it to while the system is stable. I wouldn't run anything more than like 1.3v for 24/7 operation, especially on air.
  23. As long as the card can physically fit into the computer, you should be fine. Some OEM's use funky motherboard layouts and I have seen in some Dell systems where the first PCIe slot cannot accept a double wide GPU because it interferes with the CPU heatsink.
