Ph0enix_216 reacted to pureexe in Laptop CPU on chinese motherboard with the 240mm AIO and ATX PSU that shouldn't fit TU150 case
    Previous setup:
Before we starting, I do regularly use laptop with 2x 4k montior.  It equip with i7-8750h and RTX 2070 max-q. I do have an left-over RTX 3060 from the gaming rig upgrade. So, i search for eGPU (External GPU) with the thunberbolt 3 port andprice is absurdly high. it even higher than the selling price of RTX 3060 itself. So, i decide to build a desktop PC from my left-over part instead of do a laptop upgrade.

    Planning phase:

Here is my left-over part from multiple build
    - GPU: EVGA RTX 3060
    -  RAM: DDR4 32GB @ 3200Mhz (16x2)
    - Cooler: 240mm AIO
    - Case: Phantek P200A / Lianli TU150

So, i have to find  PSU, CPU, Motherboard.

Note that i lived in Rayong, Thailand. It's a rural area that 200km (120 miles) away from Bangkok. So, there are no local seller for PC part. Only thing that i can do is go to the online marketplace and find the seller that willing to ship.

For the CPU and motherboard, i just one something that faster than current CPU but still be cheap, I planned for THB 5000. ($USD 145). The CPU from 2-3 gen ago still higher than the budget for example The seconded hand I5-11400 with h510 or it counter part R5-3600 with A320 are cost around THB 7000. which still over budget.

However, I stump on a werid motherboard that come with laptop CPU from china which cost RMB 700. It said that it come with the engineering sample cpu that equivalent of i5-gen11 laptop CPU.
The Shipping  cost from China to my house in Thailand is RMB 66.

    In total, I paid RMB 766 or THB 3800 ($USD 110)

For the PSU, I search on facebook marketplace and got the seconded hand Corsair VS450 for THB450 ($USD 13)

    Building phase (1):

The motherboard has arrived! in the box they provide IO-sheids, thermal paste and 2 SATA cable. It also come with pre-install IHS.

I haven't mention the storage yet. Because I will "Cannibalize" nvme, SATA SSD and M.2 wifi from the laptop.
Here we got nvme gen3 1TB (Transends 220s), SATA SSD 4TB (Samsing QVO860) and wifi ax card (AX200)
And don't worry about the laptop, i do have a spare nvme 256GB and wifi ac card. so, it will live on.

i take off the IHS, the pre-apply thermal paste it bad. It hitting 70c on full load under 240mm AIO.
This motherboard also support Overclocking. Once you turn the knob, it hitting thermal throtting at 100c.

I wipe of the thermal paste and then I apply the Arctic MX-5, The temperature on full load is 55c on stock and 86c on overclock.
(I know about MX-5 deflect but i have it left-over and it still working fine)

Let's put it  in the case, Here is the phantek  an p200a

Eh? too boring? let's make it harder.

Building phase (2): Clamp it into TU150!

I might start why using to TU150 is hard.
    1. it does not support ATX PSU.
    2. it does not support 240mm AIO

There also have the mod to make TU150 support AIO by hammering the case a bit, but i don't want to damage a case. and another disadvanatage is you cannot do the front fan mount anymore.

I tried to orient the PSU and there have the orientation that can fit in the case and still do a front fan mount. but there has no mounting hole for the PSU.

I won't drill and hammering to the case. So, i go to double sided tape apporch instead.

I was planned for GPU deshroud, So, i can fit the radiator and the fan under the GPU

However, it won't fit. It might be fit if i has a slim fan. sadly, i didn't have.

So, i remove the case feet and mount the fan outside instead, now the case will become the vertical case instead. (similar to Thermatake tower 100mini)

I tried my base to clamp all cable into the case

    Done!

    The Final setup!

    Performance:
Performance (Overclock) similar to i5-11400 that i was looking for but will the cheaper price.
    Cinebench R23:
    Stock: 8863 (Multicore) / 1216 (Single core)
    Overclock: 10751 (Multicore) / 1507 (Single core)
    Overclock setting: +600 Mhz / +0.085v

cleaned it up a bit and swapped from 011D to a Fractal case. I tried to hide as much cables as possible, have to order cablemod cables to make it nicer. Also painted my 6700xt to match, just have to change the RADEON led to white

After a few days of using this thing as my daily driver, here's what I have to say.

Overall, it's not a terrible little machine, and performs about as well as any APU build does in most tasks. I'm being rather mean to it and forcing it to drive two high refresh QHD panels, one at 75hz and one at 144hz, and so the vega graphics are often starved for memory even doing such simple tasks as watching youtube while having two additional windows open.

Here's the numbers you're probably looking for, all temp values are Tdie taken in a room with an ambient air temp of 20C, all power values are CPU Package as reported by hwinfo64.

    Cinebench R23 - 1311 SC | 10332 MC at 4.2Ghz locked
    3D Mark Fire Strike - 3763
    3D Mark Time Spy - 1461

Idle (8W): 40C, one fan off, one fan at minimum duty cycle
Browsing (12W): 46C, ~1300rpm on both fans, which is noticeable but gets drowned out by the HVAC system.
Light load (Cinebench SC, 18W): 59C, ~1500rpm on both fans, not noticeably louder than before.
Moderate load (35W, most games are around here): 71C, ~2100rpm on both fans. It's getting somewhat loud in a vacuum but any set of speakers or headphones will immediately eliminate it
Full load (Cinebench MC, 57W): 97C, ~2900rpm on both fans, about as loud as a well cooled gaming laptop but at a much more pleasant pitch.

All that to say, in a quiet room where this is the only thing making a sound, it's noticeable, but if there is literally anything else, like music, or a fan, or even family walking around, those will all be perceived as louder since the tone of the noise these fans make is very easy to cover up.

I'm definitely pushing up against a thermal boundary here, but maybe with a better air duct I can get more cooling capability. Either way I'm happy with having a little LAN capable machine that plays all the esporty games I want at well over 120 fps and still managed playable frame rates in heavier titles, such as a "cinematic" 30fps at QHD or 50-60 at 1080p. It underperforms ever so slightly, but that was wholly expected given the power budget I was working with.

That's pretty much it! I'm happy with it and it'll have a place of honor in my living room and probably be my choice of LAN party pc if I'm feeling lazy.

TL;DR I have and old 1U server case and want to turn it into a machine to stream to twitch and host a minecraft server.  Need to have ability for console input and budget is 400.

I just built what I intended on being a gaming PC for my son and it handles everything we throw at it.
    AMD Ryzen 5 2600 OC'd to 4.0
    MSI 350 Gaming Pro
    480 GB M.2 SSD
    2 Seagate 1TB HDD in Raid 0
    XFX Radeon 570 8GB
    2x8 GB 2666 Ram OC'd to 3000
This machine runs AAA games much better than I had planned, and now I've gotten back into gaming in a way that I didn't expect.  I've even begun to start editing videos and streaming CS:GO matches and Minecraft builds. I'd like to take an old 1U server and turn it into a streaming pc and host a minecraft server.  Any help would be appreciated.  I'd prefer to have dual cpu unit with at least 8 cores and seeing the prices of all the enterprise hardware that floats around the internet that's two to three generations old it looks like I could do this pretty cheaply.

Had a friend of mine who needed a PC bad, we all chipped in and got some parts together. My 1060, a 4790k (and accompany Z87 and ram, and PSU) from my friend's office a Silverstone AR06 for shipping purposes, a crucial SSD, and this gaudy case. I figured I should spice it up a bit, so I took some liberties.

Never said it was easy, just an option.  You are right it is a degree that will take dedication.
No problem! Be sure to check out other videos on youtube for some tips on labs and such. Network Chuck is a guy I watch for Cisco CCNA things so I would recommend him.
This! One of the next steps I plan on taking is getting into collaboration as well. It's not something I've dealt with yet but it will be a next step, along with other areas as well.

I took that video as some degree of a challenge but as I began to disassemble and fit up check realized that I didn't really want to cut much up.  Also my "classic" Z77 FTW didn't fit the circa 2012 HP Pavilion case (EATX).  I need good access to the CPU/Fan/block for my work... mounting the MoBo to the removable face worked perfectly.  I hope it's ok that there isn't any wood or cardboard in my test bench

If you don't already, I would recommend starting with the CompTIA A+, it's a good all-around cert to have.

Network+ or Cisco CCNA would be good ones to have as well.

Exactly. There's IP phones like the Cisco 7941G going for £8.99 ($11.44), and some older Cisco switches cost like £50 ($63), so it's an affordable way to get your foot in the door.
Old hardware is plentiful too, so no problems with stock.

One option is college to get a degree in computer science.

Another cheaper option (still will need to spend some $$ here for books, exams, labs ect) is certifications. This is the route I've taken and still am to further my career. If you have nothing I would start with an A+ certification. Get a book from amazon, study, find some practice exams online then signup for the exam at a Pearson center. This will typically help with getting your foot in the door in IT at something like a help desk position. After that if you enjoy networking then you can either go for a Network+ or go into vendor specific certifications like Microsoft or the more preferred Cisco CCNA Routing and Switch. Once again get some books, study. Invest in a lab so you can apply what you're learning and also check out some videos. Places like CBT Nuggets is good (does cost money for a membership) From there with the experience you have at the help desk and obtaining more advanced certs it will make it easier to get a job as a network admin. From there it's all about getting more certs and expanding your knowledge to further your career. (Cyber Ops, learning Python is a valuable tool to have as well. You can even study for Collaboration as well along with CCNA Data Center.)

This is just some of the advice I can offer that's helped me with my career. I'm sure some other members have other perspectives that may offer other options.

For the certs mentioned above, there are usually some stacks of switches and stuff for faily cheap on my equivalent to Craigslist never going to bother with the certs as I don't like networking much myself but I have seen stuff people have used to get them sold off as a stack quite a few times

Depending on where you live, join a BNI group (Business Networkers International)
The way it works is each BNI is allowed only 1 of each type of profession. So in the group, you'll have only 1 real estate agent, 1 computer geek, etc. The purpose then is to make referrals to other members of the group ("warm introductions" rather than "cold calls") from the people you know, who might need the member's services (when I was a private sector IT geek, for example, I had several clients who were moving, and introduced them to our BNI real estate person) and you get to grow your business this way.

I joined one, and while it took about a year to really get things going full swing, our company made a fortune from being in it. Well worth the time you spend in the group.
    Another option:

Given the massive availability of social media, set yourself upa small LLC building systems for people. Custom systems, simple break/fix, basic networking, that sort of thing. Yes, there is competition, but it's quite easy to set yourself apart from the rest.

Get a job in the State, they pay IT folk pretty well and a formal education isn't required.

Yeah it shouldn't be too hard to get your hands on some used Cisco equipment to build a small home lab with. You can even find some on eBay with free shipping with some better gear if craigslist doesn't pan out.
