  1. Should work, are you running 10gig ?
  2. It shouldn't bother cable/adsl users as much as fiber users for the obvious reasons, but still data caps should become a thing of the past since it really has no point in existing rather than for the companies to make more money. My best guess is that network equipment was quite heavily hammered back in the day and data caps might have had an effect on the overall throughput is the ISP or that the bandwidth was way too expensive for the ISP so that meant you paid way less than the actual cost of internet data transfer either way now both are dirt cheap and ISP's should just open the valves for speed and the amount of data you can use. Id love to see a scenario like the cold war but with ISP's for areas like the US where the majority are just monopolies sitting and doing nothing.
  3. Normally unlimited internet is well unlimited unless they would like to throttle you due to fair use policies etc... but data caps for normal (non-mobile) internet are becoming non existent. Ive only had problems when i had a 8gb cap and the speeds were way too fast so you would just blow it in a few days, 2006-ish, that lifted years ago. Now i only use about 100gigs a month thats with running servers and some torrenting.
  4. The Asus one will be better due to externals antennas.
  5. Motorola Surfboard is a good choice. Just get a bare modem model.
  6. None i am aware of. Either throw more money at it or suffer from poor performance.
  7. Well you could run something like a shoutcast or icecast, however they are streaming radio servers and may be not what you are looking for, but anyway something to consider.
  8. Most likely, fiddle around with its settings and use QoS if it has it.
  9. pfsense has terrible wireless support, i dare to say that it maybe not possible to get shield streaming working using it.
  10. The usb modems usually don't have a port for an external antenna, 90% of routers have trouble with usb tethering. How too expensive are the lines ?
  11. I really don't like cloud storage solutions provided by others, they may be reliable, but some would say you lose your privacy. If you want to have your files available everywhere build a solution yourself, even on a slow connection it has its benefits, most of the time you won't be uploading/downloading big files. Cloud computing is a great thing in terms of i upload a file and get something else back (compiling), nothing will ever replace offline gaming for me no matter how good it is, im one of those die hard local computing gamers guys But exiting times are upon us indeed.
  12. You need to get dedicated lines to a T1, T2 or a T3 provider or a peer exchange. Then you have to buy bandwidth from them and get yourself IP addresses (not that easy anymore). Then you peer with other providers to get your bandwidth across the internet. Then the infrastructure of your network has to be established. Can't really say what the prices are since it differs quite a lot from here to there. However the dream of becoming an ISP isn't out of reach, you can always become a WISP (wireless isp), its a pretty cheap way of playing god
  13. Is it at all hot ? D-Links have a tendency to die after some time of use, disable QoS on it might help in some cases.
  14. Read the Networking FAQ most of your questions are covered there.
  15. Got 3 domains to play with on a static IP.
  16. I had a P3 500 Mhz (sloted), ran me a mysql server completely silent for a long time, was my first pc i ever had since 99 till 2011 till one power component broke. Was sad to see it go, but now it serves as a case for a another P4 server
  17. Ive posted this in the Networking FAQ. There are a few types of cat5 cable: STP(FTP) shielded, UTP unshielded. Also they come in 3 types: patch (flexible), installation (stiff), plenum (fire resistant ?).
  18. All ports are open for it, what do you think ? Lose that router in the mean time.
  19. How many computers are we talking about ? If you use a consumer router you won't be able to use the extra IP's anyway. Im guessing you just need an ordinary switch then something like this would work: http://www.amazon.com/TP-LINK-TL-SG1024-1000Mbps-Rackmountable-Capacity/dp/B003BU0EKW/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1387183331&sr=8-3&keywords=24+port+gigabit+switch
  20. + in these countries you can http://imgace.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/the-best-things-in-life-aaarr-free.jpg all you want more reasons ?
  21. By default many http servers only allow local/loopback addresses to connect so here is my thought.
  22. Whats wrong with that ? People separate the whole LAMP stack into their own virtual machines. As for performance dedicated > virtual, it just give you convenience by having everything you need in one box.
