GNU/Linus reacted to Sorachan in YouTube SHOULD charge for 4K. Hear me out.
The problem of this video is the assumption that Google will only sacrifice 4K. However, judging from its competitor behaviours (look at Baidu et al) this will definitely not be the case.

In a market where a monopoly can sacrifice whatever they want to achieve better profit margin, the monopoly is guaranteed to sacrifice everything they can. Thankfully unlike the worst case scenario such as Chinese IT market, there is a limit of what Google can do without triggering government and consumer backlash.

Another thing is that you greatly overestimated the bandwith costs of Google. Unlike Floatplane where you have to pay for peering and connections, because of economies of scale most tier 1 ISPs pay very very little for their peerings. Most of Google's peerings are settlement-free, simply because they are big.

I strongly against white knighting a monopoly like Google, but I can kinda understand since LTT's livelihood depends on it.

    From the video:

This graph is highly misleading with 2015 being next to 2019 without any visual separation.

Now I'm not saying this necessarly is intentional, but it definitely should not have slipped through the quality control.

Oh yeah on reddit it was discussed that Linus's graph was very missleading given that they say it's exponential growth but also cut out everything from July 2015 to May 2019.

EDIT: For clarities sake the second graph was created by /u/StreetWave3339 who posted this graph on a subreddit discussion where I learned about the topic. I posted the comment here before having a chance to finish the video since I noticed no one in the discussion here had brought it up while it was one of the top posts on the LTT subreddit.

GNU/Linus reacted to Ubersonic in YouTube SHOULD charge for 4K. Hear me out.
    Nonsense.

This isn't about YouTube needing/trying to make money, it's about YouTube wanting to make more *profit*, by extorting it's users (which it is only in a position to do because it used those users to gain a monopoly be offering them stuff like 4K playback). If YouTube wanted to make Red/Premium more appealing they shouldn't have dropped most of their best shows (I.E Cobra Kai). This is like when Microsoft reduced the "free" OneDrive storage to force users to pay for the basic package or lose their stuff, raising profit via extortion.

Providing 4K may have been expensive for YouTube when they introduced it but operating costs have come down and it costs them less to provide a user with 4K today than providing them 1080p did a decade ago.

Also lets not forget, this will have a detrimental impact on the sale of 4K monitors/TVs and thus a detrimental impact in the development of 4K and better monitors/TVs.

NB: Free is in quotes above because technically many users with the enhanced OneDrive storage limit actually paid for it by beta testing the platform and/or buying a Windows Phone.

Nice touch that the "nobody likes being given something only to have it taken away from you" B-roll has a Stadia controller being taken away.

Anyway, largely fair arguments...unfortunately. I think people really do underestimate how fucking expensive hosting video is (and why YouTube has basically remained a monopoly as a result)

Lol@ some of the complaints on here. The price is right for what ubiquiti is offering.

For Ring, Euphy, or any of the major smart brands, you're paying AT LEAST $200 for the device and a subscription on top for their cloud services that make installation super brainless to do. Honestly, all of those services are just gimmicks and; in my opinion, should not be considered true Home Automation or Smart devices. If your internet goes down or you simply don't want to pay for the service anymore, then you lose the whole service altogether. Not to mention, your system is at the mercy of how much those companies care about your personal situation.

This is the ONLY true internal, on-prem solution that will actually secure your home. The only thing that can touch this platform, is going diy with open source technologies on your own manager network and server. You can get the open source blue iris NVR software loaded onto a box and have that box manage the software for your other smart devices. There is even an open source AI add-in for Blue Iris to give all of your cams motion detection. However, set up is not for the faint of heart.

We have to remember that Ubiquiti is a top-end product. Their bread and butter is enterprise network solutions, so this product is intended to be upsold to the CEOs of companies that buy their IAP solutions and want their mansions decked out in high tech as well. Though even if that's the case; I really don't believe $1k to $2k (to purchase the entire setup and ecosystem) is an unreasonable price to secure your HOME for the foreseeable future. Some of us spend more than that on our stupid gaming rigs. lol

It is always nice when one can run a local service for one's IoT devices.
Subscription services are though nice in their own regard, but having one's own server is nice in its own way.
Especially if one gets a decent API for interfacing with the device.

Though, sadly a lot of IoT devices are far from that friendly to deal with.

Its heavily advertised as to be used in combination with an Unifi ecosystem (to be specific Unifi Protect). They make that very clear.
This video however does not and compares it with the RING and sorts, which it shouldnt, since you need some more equiptment to make full use of it.

At that price point i would recommend the Anker eufy doorbell with mini "server" for local storage (219 Dollars)

Not sure if this was all filmed the same day, but based on the notifications I think it is time for Linus to either get a battery swap or a new phone. He lost about 10% in less than a hour.

As to the video, I am looking at updating my surveillance setup. However while their cameras are actually not that overpriced the fact that you are basically forced to buy their other hardware is a huge turn off because of the additional costs that would be needed vs using already in use hardware. For me to replace my setup with this company (hassle free, 100% to work) based on this part of the site I would need to spend at least $300 on cameras for 3, plus get at least the Cloud Key Plus which is basically another $300, and because I like redundancy and data protection I would then (should/) get the Protect Network Video Recorder at $400 for a total of $1000. Expensive, no thanks, and oh yea, practices might change and outgoing alerts etc could become a subscription fee based as well.

Most of the time same in Canada last time I checked, I think Linus forgot about it either that or he is on a old plan that actually offered a free rental for as long as you are on the plan.

I actually wouldn't mind having to rent my modem if it meant that Comcrap owned up to taking responsibility/ownership of the screwy firmware on it. (also, actually renting just the modem, not modem+router+AP AIO)

There is a free plan but you don't get the video history for 60 days like on the paid plans so you're not required to pay monthly if you don't want.
For the basic plan it's $30/year or $3/month which includes 60 day video storage, sharing, and a few other small features
The Plus plan is for multiple devices/security plan as well and is $100/year or $10/month which gets you professional monitoring and a 10% store discount too
