Just make sure you get the 7200 rpm red drives.  They come in 5400 too.  7200's will just be a lil faster.

I'd probably try to get the 5400 rpm drives here. There lower power and quieter and the speed probably won't matter normally as your network limited anyways.

Well, the Red Plus drives are 7200RPM, only the normal Red drives are 5400 but only go up to 6TB sizes (though, Red Plus is max 14TB and it looks like only select retailers in UK actually do the 14tb drive)

The plus model is higher end and has m.2 drive slots, and a faster processor. Its probably not needed for just backups here.

You can fit big hdds without issues, 16+ tb drives will work fine.

    Ok great!

And as for drives, I see there are NAS specific drives, main ones seem to be the Seagate Ironwolf pro's and WD Red Pro drives... Any preferences between them or anything?

Synology is a good platform.  Lots of folks use TrueNAS for the OS if you're running it on your own server other than Synology.  If you already have an older system or server you could install TrueNAS and then get about six 16tb drives and run a ZFS setup with some redundancy.  That way if a drive fails you're still not losing all of your backed up data.  Look up TrueNAS with ZFS.  Also look up IT mode for the storage controller.  These will get you hunting down the correct trails.

Hmmm, looking at TrueNAS with ZFS is already frying my brain ahaha! Think it might be a bit much to get started with, though I suppose slightly cheaper if I used some old parts laying around...

I'd be tempted to get something like a synology here. Fairly cheap and easily to use. something like a ds423 would likely be fine as you don't need much performance.

You can go diy though, and get a size that almost as small. You can get small cases with hot swap bays.

How does the DS423 differ to the DS423+?  And can these type of NAS systems have any size drives in? I see Jiggs224u below suggested 16tb drives, can these Synology ones support drives that big as well?

  5. So, although probably years too late, im finally starting to look at what options I have for data backup...

I have a couple of 4tb HDD's in the PC which i use to archive projects, mainly some photography but recently wedding films for couples (already finished).

In total I have around 20tb of data currently but that is always expanding so looking for around 32tb of backup for now.

What are my best options? I'd like to keep space as small as possible so probably a prebuilt NAS like synology but any tips on models, drives, etc? or if it's possible to build a really compact, "cheap" DIY NAS?

Let me know what your recommendations would be :)

  6. Just an update, it looks like it should be ok. Managed to tighten the screws a bit more and temps are better.

Though now I have noticed that it has these sudden jumps every so often before coming back down? Anyone seen this before and know a fix or what the issue is?

It doesn't seem to be related to any tasks as it does it when idle

  7. Hi All,

I've had the H80i for years now on an LGA1151 system but today upgraded to a 5800x.

I still had the AMD mounting kit for it which is the magnetic system. However my temps just at idle are 55°+. I've then been reading about possible incompatibility to the AM4 system and needing a bracket, but the bracket corsair sell is for the v2 system that required roating the bracket onto the pump.

Anyone know if I need to do anything or is mine right? Have I just not used enough compound or something?

  8. Currently using the Coolermaster CM Storm Quickfire TK. I could really do with a new keyboard as the keys on this one are starting to die on my with some not working at times. The same situation for many of the LEDs too. Constantly flickering, sometimes on full time, sometimes constantly off.

The fact its also a full size keyboard would be useful for me again because my current one is only a 10 key less

Sometimes it is programs just hogging the Ram, so you can close the program and the ram will be usable again, but othertimes, you might close a program and it doesn't give away the ram, it just keeps it and uses it for nothing.

From the task manager window, everything looks okay (other than all the ram is being used), so something has been closed and didn't recycle the Ram so other programs can use it. I know that at launch windows 10 was a Ram hog, if it happens again you may have to reinstall windows.

I have an idea as to what might be causing the issue now I think about it. I'm just going to run some tests and see what i can find out

You don't happen to play Diablo 3 do you? If I launch the game and close it, it doesn't release the memory. So If I launch it again, it does the same until eventually I get a low memory warning (on 32GB RAM). If not D3 then it might be some other program with a memory leak.

    I don't play Diablo 3 nope :/

You probably have a memory leak. Restart the computer.

Well thats what I figured..  Theres no way to find out what is causing a memory leak somehow?

  11. For the last 6 months, maybe even longer my PC has been reaching ram usage up in the high 90% after so long with the only fix being a restart.

I cannot figure out for the life of me what can be using all the memory as I have almost nothing running other than like 3/4 chrome tabs, skype and steam.. No way is that going to be hogging 8GB of ram :/

Not really sure what else to say :/

    System spec:

    4790K

    8GB RAM

    MSI MPower SP Z87

    Win 10

    OS running on 840 Evo

Don't see any other spec having an influence.

  12. then you have a damaged ram stick! try to pull one out and see if it boot if it boots pull that out and place the other one in and see if that boots to. if they boot both then there might be something wrong with the northbridge

Ok yeah.. One of them didn't post.. Already requested RMA.. Dunno how im going to be able to go without the pc for about a week :/

  13. looks strange wtf. download a linux live cd and bootup that 64bit live cd to see if it has 8gb.

Ok, im in ubuntu.. only showing 4GB.. but again.. in the BIOS and in windows it shows there is 8GB installed but only 4gb usable in both ubuntu and windows :/

    List of things done:

    BIOS Flash

    Swapped Sticks to different slots

Made sure MAX MEMORY was unchecked in msconfig (also tried with it checked)

Tried redoing windows index (Read some forums saying that fixed it for them)

Booted into Ubuntu to check if it had access to 8GB (still only 4GB)
