Tigrou got a reaction from DeadnightWarrior in I finally realized why AM4 is one of the best platforms ever
It is impressive how the number of cores in CPU has increased in recent years (thanks to AMD).
Six years ago (2017), Intel's highest-end processor (Core I7) was the 7700K which is 4C/8T. It has been like that for years.
Today, 4C/8T is the entry level (Core I3) and highest-end (13900K) has 24 Cores.

    Thanks for the tip.
Macho : yes it's a good cooler but rarely seen. People prefer to buy dual towers or AIOs (probably because it's more sexy than a big beefy heatsink). I hesitated with Corsair H150i but went for that air cooler because of the price, noise and longevity. I don't care about the look since I have a close case without window. I already have a Macho HR 02 (very similar to RT) but it's not compatible with AM4 platform.

That make sense. The least thing I want when buying a replacement is going a step back.
I am going to pair it a Grand Macho RT which has similar performance to Noctua NH-D15.

Screenshot you posted : thanks. This looks similar (but slightly higher) to 9700K temps I got while idling / browsing : about 37 C - 45 C (on a HR-02 Macho cooler)

Tigrou got a reaction from Origami Cactus in do you favor a computer with fan noise?
noisy PC is something I cannot stand.
when gaming it's OK (unless it sounds like a jet plane during take off) but for all the rest (internet, listening to music, writing emails and stuff) no way.

Tigrou reacted to Spotty in White Paste in PSU
It's normal. It's silicon caulk intentionally put in the PSU to keep components in place and stop them from vibrating. It's safe to use the PSU.

    HR-02 Macho Rev. B
It hit 77 degrees in Crysis 3 on extreme settings with a 1080TI. I haven't tried any 100% CPU stress test yet (like Blender). It's probably a little higher.

@Plutosaurus : thanks very helpful. I already saw that review but miss the 8086K result.

    12 phases, wow.
It seems a lot better than Asus 4x2 .

That is a really good price, 8700K in Germany is usually min 390 EUR.

Tigrou reacted to Stefan Payne in Should I buy i9 9900k for future proof.
No, because in a couple of weeks/months, AMD will come with a cheaper mid range CPU that might rape the 9900K for like half the price with about the same performance or double the cores for the same price...

So I'd rather look at the other side, get a good, very common board that probably will get Updated and use that.

Depending on what you have, it might make sense to hold out another 6 Months or so...

Tigrou got a reaction from Zando_ in Should I return my 1080 TI and take a 2080 instead ?
In a perfect world, I would have taken a 1080 TI MSI GAMING X TRIO OR ASUS ROG STRIX. Those ones have a bigger heatsink than my MSI 1080 TI (similar to 2080 MSI X TRIO). However, they were quite expensive (about 800-900 EUR new back then) . Now, they are almost impossible to find new at decent prices.

About 2080 being hotter : on one side they are using 12nm instead of 16nm (so they probably generate less heat at same clock speed). On another side, NVidia removed a lot of processing units in their 2080 (comparing to the 1080 TI) to make some room for those RTX transistors. That's probably why they had to clock 2080 slightly faster than 1080 TI to match performance (depsite turing being slightly better than pascal).

EDIT : from Guru3D (full load)
    2080 MSI X TRIO : 63 degrees
    1080 TI MSI X TRIO : 68 degrees
    1080 TI MSI : 69 degrees
