Or just buy a 2nd 7870 later on for a Crossfire setup and have near 290/x performance for a slight upgrade cost vs paying for a large one and having the 7870 go to waste. 
 
both are GCN - which means mantel capable and both do DX11 and are DX12 capable. 
 
so long as the game responds well to crossfire it would work out fairly well.

It is illegal because it violates the EULA for OSX. Nothing is going to happen if you create a Hackintosh. However, if you try to sell them that's where you can get into some trouble

I mean yes your not using it on "apple" hardware. But at the same time it only broadens their market to allow it to happen gets more people on Mac which dies help even if they don't buy mac hardware.
Sonys PSP was a perfect example. It was released and how many people went and bought one for the "hacked" value.
Granted the game devs may have lost out on that one.
